Two cases of Chryseobacterium meningosepticum infection in a neonatal intensive care unit (신생아 중환자실에서 발생한 Chryseobacterium meningosepticum 감염 2례)

  • We report on two premature infants who developed nosocomial infection caused by Chryseobacterium meningosepticum in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). One premature infant developed sepsis, meningitis, and hydrocephalus, and was treated successfully with ciprofloxacin plus trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination therapy for 4 weeks and with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. The other premature infant, who was in a chronically debilitated state, had infection that had colonized only in the respiratory tract but had no clinical signs for 66 days. Extensive environmental surveillance demonstrated that the suction bottle apparatus was the source of infection. We prevented the spread of infection by closing the NICU temporarily, isolating the patients early in their infection, and eradicating the source of infection source.

The Parallel Measurements of Stomatal Apertures and Apoplastic pH on Guard Cells from Epidermal Strips and Intact Leaves of Commelina communis

  • The effects of light and darkness on stomatal aperture and guard cell apoplastic pH in the intact leaf and in the isolated epidermal strips of Commelina communis have been investigated. Stomata in the intact leaf opened wide in the light. In contrast, stomata in the isolated epidermal strips did not respond clearly to light. To eucidate the relationship between the stomatal aperture and the guard cell apoplastic pH, apoplastic pH was measured. In the light the guard cell wall of intact leaf was acidified by pH 1.9 units, falling from pH 7.3 to pH 5.4 in the first 10 minutes. On the contrary, apoplastic pH of isolated epidermal strips changed slowly from pH 7.3 to pH 6.9 at 20 min. Stomata in the intact leaf closed rapidly in the dark. On the other hand, stomata in the isolated epidermal strips failed to close in dark. There was a slow increase in apoplastic pH on transfer to the dark after incubation for 1.5 h in the light and the level observed before the experiment was regained after around 40 min. When the isolated epidermal strips were transferred to the dark, apoplastic pH maintained a uniform level of around pH 7.2-7.4. These results indicate that the mechanism of stomatal opening and closing from isolated epidermal strips and intact leaves could be different.

Analysis of Decision-Making in Ethical Dilemma Cases among Clinical Nurses (윤리적 딜레마 사례에 대한 간호사의 의사결정 분석)

  • Purpose: This study was done to analyze the contents of nurses' ethical decision-making in four of hypothetical dilemma cases using the Cameron's Ethical Decision-Making Model of 'Value, Be, Do'. Method: Sixteen nurses who work at ICU at present or worked before, participated from April 10 to May 10 in 2002. The participants were interviewed three times each and for 40 minutes at once, with a structured questionnaire at their working places and locker rooms. The data was analyzed by a procedure of qualitative content analysis into three categories; what should I value, who should I be, what should I do. Result: 1) In consistency, most of subjects showed a unified voice in 'Value, Be, Do'. Exceptionally 8 subjects showed inconsistency such as 3 in active treatment to the incurable patients(case 1), 1 in treatment truth-telling to the terminally ill patients(case 2), 3 in conflict with uncooperative doctors(case 3), 3 in dying patients and euthanasia(case 4). Only one subject showed inconsistency in 3 dilemma cases. 2) Closing the interview procedure, the subjects evaluated Cameron's Model as it would help them build consistent value, carry right action, and cope to conflicts. Conclusion: On the basis of the results, it is recommended that nursing ethics should adopt the ethical decision-making model, and be applied to the curriculum of nursing colleges and continuing education program for clinical nurses.

Some articulatory reflexes observed in intervocalic consonantal sequences: Evidence from Korean place assimilation

  • This paper examines kinematic characteristics of /pk/ clusters, as compared to /kk/ and /pp/ with varying vowel contexts and speech rate. The results of EMMA data from eight Seoul-Korean speakers indicate as follows. Firstly, comparing /pk/ to /pp/ sequences, lips closing movement was faster and spatially greater in the /a/-to-/a/ context while temporally longer in the /i/-to-/i/ context. It was smaller in spatial displacement and shorter in temporal duration in /pk/ sequences. Peak velocity did not vary. Secondly, comparing /pk/ with /pp/ and /kk/ controls, lip aperture was less constricted in the /a/-to-/a/ context than /i/-to-/i/, but the maximum contact between the upper and lower lips was invariant across different vocalic contexts within /pk/ sequences (/apka/=/ipki/). Categorical reduction of C1 in /pk/ sequences fell in with the low-vowel and fast-rate conditions with across-/within-speaker variability. Gradient reduction of C1 was observed in all C1C2 types, being more frequent in fast rate. Lastly, the jaw articulator was a stable indicator of rate effects. The implication of the current study is that gestural reduction occurs with categorical reduction and general spatiotemporal weakening in the assimilating contexts, while quantitative properties of gestures may be a reason for gradient reduction, not necessarily confined to place assimilation.

Morphological Object Recognition Algorithm (몰포러지 물체인식 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, a feature extraction and object recognition algorithm using only morphological operations is proposed. The morphological operations used in feature extraction are erosion and dilation, opening and closing combining erosion and dilation, and morphological edge and skeleton detection operation. In the process of recognizing an object based on features, a pooling operation is applied to reduce the dimension. Among various structuring elements, $3{\times}3$ rhombus, $3{\times}3$ square, and $5{\times}5$ circle are arbitrarily selected in morphological operation process. It has confirmed that the proposed algorithm can be applied in object recognition fields through experiments using Internet images.

A Mathematical Analysis on Daily Inventory Clearance Pricing with Consumer's Reference Price

  • This paper discusses a clearance pricing on daily perishable products considering a reference price of consumers. The daily perishable products are sometimes sold at a discount price before closing time to stimulate demand when the number of unsold products is more than initially envisioned. The discount pricing results both in an increase of the revenue of the day and in a decrease of the disposal cost. The discounting, however, also declines a reference price of consumers which is a mental price and serves as an anchor price to judge if a current sales price is loss or gain for the consumers. An excess discounting decreases the demand for the products sold at a regular price in the future and diminishes long-term profit. This study conducts a mathematical analysis on the clearance pricing problem for a single period with stochastic variations both on demand and on the inventory level at clearance time. The expected profit function especially depends on the response of consumers to the clearing price against their reference prices. A procedure is proposed to derive an optimal clearance price when consumers are loss-neutral. A sufficient condition is shown to obtain an optimal price for loss-averse and loss-seeking consumers by an analogous procedure.

Role of Intraoperative Angiography in the Surgical Treatment of Cerebral Aneurysms (뇌동맥류의 수술 중 뇌혈관 조영술의 역할)

  • Objective : In the cerebral aneurysm surgery, the goal is complete circulatory exclusion of the aneurysm without compromise of normal vessels. In an operating room, an operator should confirm the completeness and precision of the surgical result, before closing the wound. Object of this study was to determine which cases require intraoperative angiography. Methods : We reported our experience with 48 intraoperative angiographic studies performed during the surgical treatment of cerebral aneurysm of these 48 cases. There were 5 giant(10.4%), 15 globular(1.5-2.5cm)(31.25%) and 28 saccular(58.3%) aneurysm. We recorded the incidence of unexpected findings, such as residual aneurysms, major vessel occlusions. Using Fischer's exact test, we assessed whether unexpected angiographic findings showed any correlation with aneurysm site, size and clinical findings. Results : In 5 cases(10.4%), we detected unexpected angiographic findings which resulted in clip adjustment. By means of clip adjustment, an operator could restore the flow of two major arterial occlusion(4.2%) and also obliterate three persistent filling aneurysms(6.3%). Globular aneurysm was the only factor to predict unexpected angiographic findings(p<0.05). The subgroup of globular and giant aneurysm has a high risk of occlusion of the parent artery and its branches and/or residual aneurysm. There were two minor complications related to this procedure. Conclusion : Intraoperative assessment makes it possible to recognize and correct the technical defect. Particularly in globular aneurysm, we were able to prevent both the chance for another operation and the risk of postoperative complications.

Application of Image Processing to Determine Size Distribution of Magnetic Nanoparticles

  • Digital image processing has increasingly been implemented in nanostructural analysis and would be an ideal tool to characterize the morphology and position of self-assembled magnetic nanoparticles for high density recording. In this work, magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized by the modified polyol process using $Fe(acac)_3$ and $Pt(acac)_2$ as starting materials. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images of as-synthesized products were inspected using an image processing procedure. Grayscale images ($800{\times}800$ pixels, 72 dot per inch) were converted to binary images by using Otsu's thresholding. Each particle was then detected by using the closing algorithm with disk structuring elements of 2 pixels, the Canny edge detection, and edge linking algorithm. Their centroid, diameter and area were subsequently evaluated. The degree of polydispersity of magnetic nanoparticles can then be compared using the size distribution from this image processing procedure.

UML Modeling to TM Modeling and Back

  • Certainly, the success of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) as the de facto standard for modeling software systems does not imply closing the door on scientific exploration or experimentation with modeling in the field. Continuing studies in this area can produce theoretical results that strengthen UML as the leading modeling language. Recently, a new modeling technique has been proposed called thinging machine (TM) modeling. This paper utilizes TM to further understand UML, with two objectives: (a) Fine issues in UML are studied, including theoretical notions such as events, objects, actions, activities, etc. Specifically, TM can be used to solve problems related to internal cross-diagram integration. (b) TM applies a different method of conceptualization, including building a model on one-category ontology in contrast to the object-oriented paradigm. The long-term objective of this study is to explore the possibility of TM complementing certain aspects in the UML methodology to develop and design software systems. Accordingly, we alternate between UML and TM modeling. A sample UML model is redesigned in TM, and then UML diagrams are extracted from TM. The results clarify many notions in both models. Particularly, the TM behavioral specification seems to be applicable in UML.

A Study on the Efficiency of the Foreign Exchange Markets: Evidence from Korea, Japan and China

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study was to examine the efficiency of the foreign exchange markets in Korea, Japan and China. Design/methodology/approach - This study collected 1327 observations each of the daily closing exchange rates of the three currencies against the US dollar for the sample period from January 1, 2015 to January 31, 2020, based on the tests for autocorrelation, unit root tests and GARCH-M(1,1) model estimation. Findings - We have found that the autocorrelation test indicates the lack of autocorrelation and unit root test confirms the existence of unit roots in all times series of the three currencies, respectively. The GARCH-M(1,1) test results, however, suggest that the exchange rates do not follow a random walk process. In conclusion, the recent spot foreign exchange markets in Korea, Japan and China are believed to be informationally inefficient. Research implications or Originality - These findings have practical implications for both individual and institutional investors to be able to obtain excess returns on their investments in the foreign exchange markets in three countries by using appropriate risk management, portfolio strategy, technical analysis, etc. This study provides the first empirical examination on the foreign exchange market efficiency in the three biggest economies in Asia including China, which has been excluded from research due to its exchange rate regime.
