The closed chamber method, which is one of the most commonly used method for measuring greenhouse gases produced in rice paddy fields, has limitations in measuring dynamic $CH_4$ flux with spatio-temporal constrains. In order to deal with the limitation of the closed chamber method, some studies based on open-path of eddy covariance method have been actively conducted recently. The aim of this study was to compare the $CH_4$ fluxes measured by open-path and closed chamber method in the paddy rice fields. The open-path, one of the gas ($CO_2$, $CH_4$ etc.) analysis methods, is technology where a laser beam is emitted from the source passes through the open cell, reflecting multiple times from the two mirrors, and then detecting. The $CH_4$ emission patterns by these two methods during rice cultivation season were similar, but the total $CH_4$ emission measured by open-path method were 31% less than of the amount measured by closed chamber. The reason for the difference in $CH_4$ emission was due to overestimation by closed chamber and underestimation by open-path. The closed chamber method can overestimate $CH_4$ emissions due to environmental changes caused by high temperature and light interruption by acrylic partition in chamber. On the other hand, the open-path method for eddy covariance can underestimate its emission because it assumes density fluctuations and horizontal homogeneous terrain negligible However, comparing $CH_4$ fluxes at the same sampling time (AM 10:30-11:00, 30-min fluxes) showed good agreements ($r^2=0.9064$). The open-path measurement technique is expected to be a good way to compensate for the disadvantage of the closed chamber method because it can monitor dynamic $CH_4$ fluctuation even if data loss is taken into account.
BACKGROUND: The closed chamber method is the most commonly used for measuring greenhouse gas emissions from rice fields. This method has the advantages of being simple, easily available and economical. However, a measurement result using the chamber method is an estimated value and is complete when the uncertainty is estimated. The methane emissions from a rice paddy account for the largest portion of the greenhouse gas emissions in the agriculture sectors. Although assessment of uncertainty components affecting methane emission from a rice paddy is necessary to take account of dispersion characteristics, research on these uncertainty components is very rare to date. The goal of this study was to elucidate influencing factors on measurement uncertainty of methane concentrations measured by a closed automated chamber system from a rice paddy. METHODS AND RESULTS: The methane sampling system is located in the rice paddy in Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services (37°13'15"N, 127°02'22"E). The primary measurement uncertainty components influencing methane concentrations (influencing factors) investigated in this research were repeatability, reproducibility and calibration in the aspects of methane sampling and analytical instrumentation. The magnitudes of the relative standard uncertainty of each influencing factor were quantified and compared. CONCLUSION: Results of this study showed what influencing factors were more important in determination of methane concentrations measured using the chamber system and analytical instrumentation located in the monitoring site. Quantifying the measurement uncertainty of the methane concentrations in this study would contribute to improving measurement quality of methane fluxes.
BACKGROUND: The closed chamber method is the most commonly used for measuring greenhouse gas emissions from upland fields. This method has the advantages of being simple, easily available and economical. However, uncertainty estimation is essential for accurate assessment of greenhouse gas emissions and verification of emission reductions. The nitrous oxide emissions from upland field is very important for the nitrogen budget in the agriculture sectors. Although assessment of uncertainty components affecting nitrous oxide emission from upland field is necessary to take account of dispersion characteristics, research on these uncertainty components is very rare to date. This study aims at elucidation of influencing factors on measurement uncertainty of nitrous oxide concentrations measured by an automated open closed chamber method from upland field. METHODS AND RESULTS: The nitrous oxide sampling system is located in the upland field in Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services (37°13'22"N, 127°02'22"E). The primary measurement uncertainty components influencing nitrous oxide concentrations (influencing factors) investigated in this research are repeatability, reproducibility and calibration in the aspects of nitrous oxide sampling and analytical instrumentation. The magnitudes of the relative standard uncertainty of each influencing factor are quantified and compared. CONCLUSION: Results of this study show what influencing factors are more important in determination of nitrous oxide concentrations measured using the automated open closed chambers located in the monitoring site. Quantifying the measurement uncertainty of the nitrous oxide concentrations in this study would contribute to improving measurement quality of nitrous oxide fluxes.

This study has been done as a preliminary work in the process of confirming the modeling and calculation results on the dynamic characteristics of closed-type swirl injector which were performed by Ismailov et al. in Purdue university. Closed-type swirl injectors with replaceable swirl chamber parts were designed and manufactured. The steady state spray characteristics of closed-type swirl injector with varying swirl chamber length and diameter were verified. Mass flow rate was measured with a mass flow meter installed in front of the injector, and liquid film thickness was measured by Lefebvre's method with electrodes installed at the orifice of the injector. Variation of spray cone angle and break-up length were investigated from the spray images captured under different manifold pressure conditions.
A simplified closed static chamber method was devised for measurement of methane flux from paddy fields. Compared to automatic methane measuring system(AMMS) this chamber method provides availability with moderate costs of setup and maintenance, while it also provides the time-effectiveness compared to other closed top-type chamber method. It accomodates 30 chambers within 2 hours sampling period with two persons. And it provide a rapid and accurate analysis of methane, 30-40 samples per hour. Modified method for $N_2O$ measurements provides a precise and accurate analysis of nitrous oxide without upgrading additional heating zones for gas sampling(switching) valves.

Accurate assessment of greenhouse gas emissions is a cornerstone of every climate change response study, and reliable assessment of greenhouse gas emission data is being used as a practical basis for the entire climate change prediction and modeling studies. Essential, fundamental technologies for estimating greenhouse gas emissions include an on-site monitoring technology, an evaluation methodology of uncertainty in emission factors, and a verification technology for reductions. The closed chamber method is being commonly used to measure gas fluxes between soil-vegetation and atmosphere. This method has the advantages of being simple, easily available and economical. This study presented the technical bases of the closed chamber method for measuring methane fluxes from a rice paddy. The methane fluxes from rice paddies occupy the largest portion of a single source of greenhouse gas in the agricultural field. We reviewed the international and the domestic studies on automated chamber monitoring systems that have been developed from manually operated chambers. Based on this review, we discussed scientific concerns on chamber methods with a particular focus on quality control for improving measurement reliability of field data.
Various factors such as sampling height in the chamber, sampling interval, sampling time at daytime and the effects of pedoturbation on methane emission during chamber installation were evaluated using a simplified closed static chamber method to measure methane flux in paddy soils. Sampling height of the chamber for representative samples was 65cm. An additional DC fan was required to attain an even methane gradient in the chamber. Considering the change of methane concentration and air temperature in the chamber, sampling is recommended to finish within 30 minutes after starting sampling. The aim of setting DC fan in the chamber was to get the thermal equilibrium in the chamber as well as the representative samples. Suitable time to collect the gas samples representing the day's methane flux was 0900~1200 hours. Gas sampling was possible even after installation of small chambers if the elapsed time was more than 6 hours and supporting stand would be to be added to minimize pedoturbation.

It is well known that acoustic signals, even measured in an anechoic chamber, can be contaminated due to the wall interference. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct the original signal from the measured data, which is very critical for the case of measurement of source signal in a water tunnel. In this thesis, new methods for the reconstruction of sound sources are proposed and validated by using Boundary Element Method from measured data in a closed space. The inverse Helmholtz integral equation and its normal derivative are used for the reconstruction of sound sources in a closed space. An arbitrary Kirchhoff surface over the sources is proposed to solve the surface information instead of direct solution for the source. Although sound sources are not directly known by the inverse Helmholtz equation, the original sound source of pressure-field outside of the wall can be indirectly obtained by using this new method.

The chamber method is widely used for measuring methane emission from paddy rice fields. The closed static chamber has advantages of easy installation and removal in the field and low manufacturing cost. However, the manual chamber method requires a lot of labor and has a limited sampling time and frequency. To overcome the disadvantages of the manual chamber, the auto-chamber system is used for measuring methane emission. We compared the differences in methane flux between the auto-chamber and manual chamber. To investigate methane emissions by the two methods, a chamber was installed for each of the following treatments : control without rice straw (NA), spring plowing after autumn rice straw application (SPRA) and autumn plowing after autumn rice straw application (APRA). The total methane emission was lowest in the control and highest in APRA with both methods. There was no significant difference in total methane emission between the methods, but dynamic fluctuation in methane with temperature change was accurately measured in the auto-chamber. Measuring methane emission with an auto-chamber system is expected to reduce uncertainty and increase accuracy, accompanied by labor reduction.

Soil CO₂ emission is one of the primary components in carbon balance of terrestrial ecosystems. In soil CO₂ flux measurements, chamber method is currently the most common technique. Prior to compare or synthesize the data collected from different chamber methods, potential biases must be quantified for each measurement system. We have conducted an intercomparison experiment among four closed dynamic chamber systems and an automatic open-closed chamber system in a temperature-controlled phytotron. Due to the disturbed CO₂ concentrations inside the phytotron during the measurements with closed dynamic chambers and the changes in soil water content, the interpretation of the data was difficult to quantify the biases of individual methods. However, the experiment provided not only valuable information on the performance characteristics of the five instruments to varying soil temperature and CO₂ concentration but also useful insights for better designs and strategy for future intercomparison in a controlled environment.
