Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between psychological factors and symptoms of oral mucosal diseases by means of the revised version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2). Methods: Three hundred and eighteen college students in Gyeonggi-do completed the MMPI-2 and a questionnaire related to symptoms of oral mucosal diseases and collected data were analyzed by Student's t-test and one way ANOVA. Results: Subjects who have experienced herpetic stomatitis revealed significantly higher mean values of T-scores than subjects who have not on hypochondriasis (Hs) and hysteria (Hy) clinical scales of the MMPI-2 (p<0.05). In comparison with subjects who have had recurrent aphthous ulceration, subjects who have not had it manifested significantly higher elevations on the schizophrenia (Sc) clinical scale (p<0.05). Subjects who have suffered oral lichen planus (OLP) showed significantly higher mean values of T-scores than subjects who have not on paranoia (Pa) (p<0.05) and hypomania (Ma) (p<0.01) clinical scales. Mean values of T-scores on Ma clinical scale were significantly higher in subjects having experienced glossodynia than in subjects having not experienced (p<0.05). Subjects having felt taste disturbance exhibited significantly higher elevations on Hs (p<0.0001) and Hy (p<0.01) clinical scales compared to subjects having not. Conclusions: Symptoms of oral mucosal diseases such as herpetic stomatitis, taste disturbance, OLP, and glossodynia were found to be related to Hs, Hy, Pa, Ma clinical scales of the MMPI-2. Therefore, comprehensive psychological evaluations of those oral mucosal diseases may be beneficial in a therapeutic approach.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Korean medical treatment including Sanhuhyulpung-tang on three postpartum patients who suffered from hyperhidrosis. Methods: We treated three patients complained of postpartum symptoms including hyperhidrosis. The patients were treated by Traditional Korean Medicine including herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy. Sanhuhyulpung-tang is a herbal medicine prescription which is used in clinical practice for the treatment of postpartum sweating, anxiety, flushing, and joint pain. Three patients were hospitalized for treatment for 6, 8, and 19 days respectively. During hospitalization, patients took Sanhuhyulpung-tang three times a day, and acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping were performed once a day. To evaluate the degree of improvement, we used VAS score of the patient's chief complaint during hospitalization. Results: After the treatment, symptoms including hyperhidrosis were improved. The degree of excessive sweating decreased to 30% in two patients, and 55% in one patient. Combined symptoms including lower coldness, burning sensation, chilling, and multiple site pain also improved on discharge day. Conclusions: This case report shows that Korean medicine treatment including Sanhuhyulpung-tang can improve postpartum symptoms including hyperhidrosis.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medicine treatment on a patient with brachial plexus injury. Methods : The patient with symptoms of pain and dysesthesia on right forearm and hand was treated with acupuncture treatment, herbal medicine, moxibustion and physical treatment. Improvement of the patient's symptoms was evaluated by Hepatic dullness sound, NRS, VAS, SF-36 bodily pain, grip strength. Results : After 42 days of treatment, NRS score significantly decreased. VAS score, SF-36 bodily pain and grip strength showed moderate improvement. Conclusions : This results suggest that Korean medicine treatment may be effective in reducing the symptoms of brachial plexus injury.
Acute pandysautonomic neuropathy(APN) is an uncommon clinical entitiy involving vasomotor, sudomotor, pupilomotor, secretomotor and other autonomic systems. Both sympathetic or parasympathetic fibers are involved with relative preservation of somatic sensory and motor function. Although APN shares several clinical features with GBS, it is not clear whether APN is a subvariety of GBS. We report two young patients with APN. Patient 1 was a 18-year-old girl with recurrent fainting spells. Patient 2 was a 23-year-old man sufferring from unexplained nausea and vomiting. Both had a history of previous upper respiratory infection. They presented with gastroparesis, anhydrosis and orthostatic hypotension. Mild numbness and tingling sense was present, but motor power was intact. Neurologic examination showed bilateral tonic pupil, decreased pain and vibration sense, and absent tendon reflexes. Nerve conduction study indicated diffuse sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Nerve biopsy in patient 2 revealed axonal degeneration. After conservative management, gastrointestinal symptoms were improved in patient 2, however, patient 1 suffered from the symptoms lasting more than several months. These cases suggest that post-infectious dysautonomic symptoms in young patient may indicate the diagnosis of APN. Although the natural course is generally benign, accurate diagnosis and proper management may be mandatory for the better clinical outcome.
This is a retrospective study of 31 patients, who were diagnosed as bilateral TMJ internal derangement in consequence of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) at Department of Dentistry, Ajou University Hospital, and who were compared clinical findings with radiological findings. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The average of the patients of bilateral TMJ internal derangement was 27.3 years with a range from 12 to 74 years, and 93.6% of the patients were yonger than 40 years of age. The male-female ratio was 1 : 6.8, and the females of $20{\sim}29$ years were most common in 35.5%. 2. In the patients of bilateral TMJ internal derangement, the patients who complained clinical symptoms bilaterally were 38.7% and the patients who complained clinical symptoms untilaterally were 61.3%. 3. The most common disc position of bilateral TMJ internal derangement was anterior disc displacement without reduction on both sides in 38.7%. The most common disc configuration of bilateral TMJ internal derangement was biconcave on both sides and amorphous on both sides in closed mouth, and was amorphous on both sides in open mouth. 4. In the patients of bilateral TMJ internal derangement, the joints which really showed clinical symptoms were most common in anterior displacement without reduction of 48.9%.
Towards the end of 2019, an atypical acute respiratory disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was identified in Wuhan, China and subsequently named Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The rapid dissemination of COVID-19 has provoked a global crisis in public health. COVID-19 has been reported to cause sepsis, severe infections in the respiratory tract, multiple organ failure, and pulmonary fibrosis, all of which might induce mortality. Although several vaccines for COVID-19 are currently being administered worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic is not yet effectively under control. Therefore, novel therapeutic agents to eradicate the cause of the disease and/or manage the clinical symptoms of COVID-19 should be developed to effectively regulate the current pandemic. In this review, we discuss the possibility of managing the clinical symptoms of COVID-19 using natural products derived from medicinal plants used for controlling pulmonary inflammatory diseases in folk medicine. Diverse natural products have been reported to exert potential antiviral effects in vitro by affecting viral replication, entry into host cells, assembly in host cells, and release. However, the in vivo antiviral effects and clinical antiviral efficacies of these natural products against SARS-CoV-2 have not been successfully proven to date. Thus, these properties need to be elucidated through further investigations, including randomized clinical trials, in order to develop optimal and ideal therapeutic candidates for COVID-19.
Diagnosing Hirschprungs disease (HD) is a clinical challenge to pediatric surgeons. The cardinal symptoms are failure of passage of meconium within first 24 hours of life, abdominal distension, and vomiting. The severity of these symptoms and the degree of consitpation vary considerably between patients. HD is suspected on the basis of history and clinical findings and the diagnosis is established by radiological examination, anorectal manometry, and histochemical analysis of biopsy specimens. In this review, the advantages and pitfalls of each diagnostic modality are discussed. And a diagnostic approach utilizing these diagnostic modalities in children with suspicious HD is presented.

After disappointing application of the corticosteroid, she received Korean medicine treatment including herbal medicine and herbal external medication for 1.5 months. Results : The skin symptoms such as erythema and pruritus were remarkably improved. Also, the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) of pruritus changed from 4 to 0. Conclusions : This case report suggests that Korean medicine may have a role in treating tinea pedis with some skin symptoms such as erythema and pruritus.
Effects of Korean red ginseng (KG) and western ginseng (WG) on body temperature, pulse rate, clinical symptoms and hematological changes in human were studied after administration p.o. with Korean red ginseng and western ginseng for 10-days. KG was more effective in keeping homeostsis in than western ginseng in the changes of body temperature and pulse rate. KG was more effective in low body temperature and SOEVMIN (소음인), while inducing tachycardia especially in SOYANGIN (소양인) and TAEEUMIN (태음인). WG tended to drop temperature abruptly and also descended pulse rate with greater range than KG. KG and WG could cause side effects such as headache and gastrointestinal syndromes and induce hypertension or hypotension abruptly in specific constitutions. However, KG and WG did not cause abnormal changes in urinalysis and hematology.
Orthostatic hypotension is a sustained and pathological drop in blood pressure upon standing. Orthostatic hypotension can be due to non-neurogenic conditions or autonomic disorders. Impaired baroreflex-mediated vasoconstriction and insufficient release of norepinephrine play key roles in the pathophysiology of neurogenic orthostatic hypotension. Its common symptoms mainly related to inadequate cerebral blood flow include dizziness, lightheadedness, and syncope. It is crucial to differentiate neurogenic orthostatic hypotension from non-neurogenic orthostatic hypotension. For the management of neurogenic orthostatic hypotension, physicians should implement non-pharmacological methods and, if possible, reverse combined non-neurological conditions. Depending on severity of symptoms, pharmacological intervention may be tried after or with non-pharmacological methods. Its management should be individualized based on intensity of symptoms, comorbid conditions, drug side effects, and etiology. In this review, we discuss the definition, pathophysiology, clinical approach, and management of neurogenic orthostatic hypotension.
