  • Purpose: Sjogren's syndrome is a type of autoimmune disease and characterized by the keratoconjunctivitis sicca, xerostomia, dryness of mouth & eyes and rheumatoid arthritis or another connective tissue disease. In the Traditional Korean Medicine, there is few report to diagnose and treat Sjogren's syndrome. Methods: The subject was a typical Sjogren's syndrome in 48-year old women whose complaints were dryness of mouth and eyes, severe general myalgia. The author treated her with acupuncture and herbal medicine therapy, then evaluated with MMQ score, XQS grade and VAS score on a regular basis. Results: After treatment, clinical symptoms were improved, MMQ score and XQS grade were decreased. Conclusion: The Traditional Korean Medical Therapy combined acupuncture with herbal medicine relieves the symptom of Sjogren's syndrome.

  • Purpose: In this study, we compared the quantitative characteristics of dynamic salivary gland scintigraphy with static scintigraphy in patients with clinical sicca syndrome using Tc-99m pertechnetate. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two parotid glands and 52 submandibular glands out of 26 patients with clinical sicca syndrome were studied by dynamic and static salivary gland scintigraphy. Ten normal volunteers were also studied as a control group for comparison of scintigraphic parameters. Ten minutes after injection of 370 MBq Tc-99m pertechnetate, we obtained pre-stimulus static images for a few minutes. Then dynamic salivary gland scintigraphy with lemon juice stimulation was performed for 20 minutes. Finally we obtained post-stimulus static images after dynamic images. On dynamic study, functional parameters such as uptake rate, secretion rate and re-uptake rate were calculated. The results of dynamic study and static images were compared. Results: On dynamic study, we could obtain functional parameters of salivary glands successfully. On dynamic study, 22 parotid glands and 22 submandibular glands out of each of 52 glands are abnormal. The static images demonstrated somewhat different results, of which reasons we could assume via dynamic study. Conclusion: Dynamic salivary gland scintigraphy using Tc-99m perechnetate were more functional than static images and might be useful in the assessment of the functional change of the salivary gland in patients with clinical sicca syndrome.

  • Objective : The object of this literatual study is to investigate the etiology of dry eye syndrome Methods : We have selected data related to etiology of dry eye syndrome on the literature of Oriental Medicine. And we analyzed the study. Results : Treatment and etiology concerning dry eye syndrome derived diverse opinion according to medical era and practitioner. It was a good opportunity to speculate the etiology and similar symptoms of dry eye syndrome. Conclusions : Through literatual Study, we basically understood the etiology of dry eye syndrome. In the study of the etiology, it seems that further clinical studies on treatment of dry eye syndrome via oriental medicine.

  • We diagnosed a patient with chronic dry mouth for 3 years as definite Sjogren's syndrome by the criteria for diagnosis of Sjogren's syndorne proposed by the 1st international seminar on Sjogren's syndrome. The clinical immunologic , hematologic, scintigraphic, and histologic examinations were performed. The patient showed severe xeorstomia, keratoconjunctiva sicca, severe infiltration of lymphocytes in minor salivary glands, and evidences of autoantibodies. The patient's history and clinical findings excluded preexisting lymphoma, graft-versus-host disease, acquired immunodeficiency disease, and sarcoidosis.

  • Sj$\ddot{o}$gren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by keratoconjunctivitis sicca and xerostomia. About thirty percent of patients with Sj$\ddot{o}$gren's syndrome experience nervous system involvement such as myelopaty, optic neuropathy, and peripheral neuropathy. The most common pattern of peripheral nerve involvement is axonal polyneuropathy. We present a case of demyelinating polyneuropathy in a patient with Sj$\ddot{o}$gren's syndrome, which had been proven by electrophysiology and pathology.
