Of 45 cases, 44 cases were over 40 years of age and the sex ratio was 4.6:1 in male`s favor. 3. Among 50 cases, 45 cases were confirmed histopathologically. Of these, 30 cases [66.7%] were squamous cell carcinoma, 8 cases [17.8%] adenocarcinoma, and 7 cases [15.6%] undifferentiated cell carcinoma. 4. The thoracotomy was performed in 31 cases [68.9%] of 45 cases and the resection of the lesion in 16 cases [51.6%]. The empyema and bronchopleural fistula developed in 2 cases.

  • A Clinical analysis of 59 patients of thoracic empyema was done who were received surgical intervention at dept. of thoracic surgery of the C.A.F.G.H. in the period of 2.5 years from January 1979 to June 1982. Occurrence ratio of Left and Right side pleural cavity of empyema was 1: 1.4. The predisposing factors of empyema were pulmonary Tbc. [49%], Chest pain [25%], Cough [8%], in order. B.P.F. was associated with empyema in 5 cases. The pleural cavity empyema was treated with several surgical procedures and conservative measures. Among of the 59 cases, the 30 cases [50%] were treated with decortication, 12 cases [20%] with closed thoractomy drainage, 9 cases with frequent thoracenteses, 5 cases with partial decortication and thoracoplasty and 3 cases with open thoracostomy tube drainage. Among of the 59 cases thoracic empyema, the full recovery were in 32 cases [54%], partial recovery in 20 cases [34%], not improved in 3 cases [5%] and 3 cases were died. The mortality rate was 5% and the recovery rate was 89%.

  • This study based on the clinical analysis of 42 cases of bronchiectasis treated by surgical resection at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Chosun University Hospital, during 6 years period from 1986 to 1991. The 42 patients with bronchiectasis were composed of 33 males and 9 females, and the peak incidence of age was in the 3rd decade. The clinical symptoms were cough, purulent sputum, hemoptysis and dyspnea. Based on the morphological classification by bronchograpgy, the common type was present in 19 cases[45%] of cylindrical type. The frequently involved site was left lower lobe, and so left lower lobectomy was the most frequently performed method of surgical resection. Postoperative complications were occurred in 8 cases[18%], such as wound infection, atelectasis, pleural effusion, hemothorax, but there were no fatal cases.

  • Author examined clinical procedure, clinical application and clinical failure of castable glass ceramic (Dicor) crowns which were made at the Dept. of Prosthodontics, Seoul National University Hospital during 19 months from Jan. 1988 to July, 1989(Observation period:19 months). The author obtained the following results. 1. A total of 86 crowns were constructed ; Most of them has been set on maxillary central incisors(53 cases, 62%):maxillary lateral incisors(20 cases, 23%):maxillary canines(6 cases, 7%):others(7 cases, 8%) 2. Dicer could be used as a lamiate veneer for discolored tooth. 3. During the examination period(1-19 months), there was no fracture case. 4. Dicer could be applied on the maxillary anterior tooth with minimal occlusal force.

  • Intussusception after colonoscopy is an unusual complication. A MEDLINE search revealed only 7 reported cases. We present a report of a 28-year-old man who developed abdominal pain several hours after routine colonoscopy and in whom computed tomography (CT) revealed colocolic intussusception. We postulate that this condition is iatrogenic and induced by suctioning of gas on withdrawal of the colonoscope. A common observation among the reported cases was abdominal pain several hours after colonoscopy and right-sided intussusception. All cases had colonoscopy reaching the right side of the colon. Treatment for adult intussusception remains controversial with regard to reduction versus resection, especially given the high association with a pathological cause and malignancy. Among the 8 reported cases, only the current case did not require surgery. A combination of benign colonoscopy, CT, and the clinical picture should provide sufficient information to initially choose a more conservative treatment approach.

  • Objective : We report experiences and clinical outcomes of 61 cases with spinal canal meningiomas from January 1970 through January 2005. Methods : Thirty-eight patients were enrolled with follow-up duration of more than one year after surgery. There were 7 male and 31 female patients. The mean age was 52 years (range, 19 to 80 years). All patients underwent microsurgical resection using a posterior approach. Results : Twenty-nine (79.4%) cases experienced clinical improvement after surgery. The extent of tumor resection at the first operation was Simpson Grade I in 10 patients, Grade II in 17, Grade III in 4, Grade IV in 6, and unknown in one. We did not experience recurrent cases with Simpson grade I, II, or III resection. There were 6 recurrent cases, consisting of 5 cases with an extent of Simpson grade IV and one with an unknown extent. The mean duration of recurrence was 100 months after surgery. Radiation therapy was administered as a surgical adjunct in four patients (10.5%). Two cases were recurrent lesions that could not be completely resected. The other two cases were malignant meningiomas. No immediate postoperative death occurred in the patient group. Conclusion : We experienced no recurrent cases of intraspinal meningiomas once gross total resection has been achieved, regardless of the control of the dural origin. Surgeons do not have to take the risk of causing complication to the control dural origin after achieving gross total resectioning of spinal canal meningioma.
