Synoptic Climatic Patterns for Winter Extreme Low Temperature Events in the Republic of Korea (우리나라 겨울철 극한저온현상 발생 시 종관 기후 패턴)

  • The present study aims to characterize the synoptic climatic patterns of winter extreme low temperature events occurred in different regions of Korea based on daily temperature data observed at 61 weather stations under the supervision of the Korea Meteorological Administation and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis I data for the recent 40 years (1973~2012) period. Analyses of daily maximum and minimum temperatures below 10th percentile thresholds show that high frequencies of winter extreme low temperature events appear across the entire regions of Korea or in either the western or eastern half region divided by major mountain ridges at the 2~7 dayintervals particularly in the first half of the winter period (before mid-January). Composite analyses of surface synoptic climatic data including sea level pressure and wind vector reveal that 13 regional types of winter extreme low temperature events in Korea are closely associated with the relative location and intensity of both the Siberian high pressure and the Aleutian low pressure systems as well as major mountain ridges. Investigations of mid-troposphere (500 hPa) synoptic climatic charts demonstrate that the blocking-like upper troposphere low pressure system advecting the cold air from the Arctic toward the Korean Peninsula may provide favorable synoptic conditions for the outbreaks of winter extreme low temperature events in Korea. These results indicate that the monitoring of synoptic scale climatic systems in East Asia including the Siberian high pressure system, the Aleutian low pressure system and upper level blocking system is critical to the improvement of the predictability of winter extreme low temperature events in Korea.

  • The ground high/low temperature test objective is to check the normal ground operation of FA-50 aircraft in the extreme ground ambient conditions. The aircraft was exposed in climatic conditions of the basic climatic category according to the MIL-HDBK-310. For verified normal operation in the extreme high temperature, the high temperature test was performed in the hot regional type conditions and accentuated solar radiation heat. This test was performed at the test chamber in ADD where is in Haemi. This paper was described about the test procedure of FA-50 high/low temperature including preparation, testing and results.

  • In recent years, the drying of the water spider habitat has been progressing rapidly. This is the primary cause of extreme climatic events in 2014/2015 with overall reduction in annual precipitation, but impermeable clayey layer formed in the superficial formation also plays an important role. The clayey layer is a critical factor in the formation of wetlands on a well-drained lava plateau, but paradoxically, it restricts the connection with ground water, increasing the instability of the water balance and making it precipitation-dependent structure. In addition, construction of roads/drainways has also caused drying of wetlands by blocking or rapidly spilling surface water/sheet flow. Therefore, to keep the wetlands sustainable, it should increase the flow into the wetlands by removing the road/drainways and floodgates installed to reduce the outflow.

Temperature Changes of Climatic Solar Terms and Their Spatiotemporal Characteristics in South Korea (우리나라 기후 절기별 기온 변화의 시공간적 특성 분석)

  • The temperature change patterns of climatic solar terms and their climatic fitness were analyzed. Harmonic analysis based on thirty-year(1981-2010) time-series data from sixty one weather stations across South Korea showed that the central peaks of the extreme heat had shifted toward start of autumn with increasing mean temperature. The overall climatic fitness of solar terms, such as major heat, frost descent, major snow, and major cold, was low, and it showed significant regional variations. The actual meteorological phenomenon representing each climatic solar term was observed much later than the day of the solar term at most weather stations. The number of observations, where an actual meteorological condition for each climatic solar term was recorded within ${\pm}1$ week from the day of that solar term, ranged only from 7.7% to 40.4% of the entire data. Study results also showed that the climatic fitness of major heat, frost descent, and major snow gradually changed in the east-west direction. Major cold, a solar term with higher climatic fitness, was influenced more strongly by latitude than longitude. Considering geographically uneven magnitude and trends in temperature changes, rearrangement and adjustment of time intervals between the solar terms may help us improve their applicability as realistic indicators of seasonal changes.

  • Every site has a different given geometrical and climatic condition, which influenced not only the lifestyle of the humanbeings but also the regional architecture. For example, on a cold region, the reduction of the energy loss is necessary, like an igloo, which has a littlest energy loss at hemisphere. Or on a warm region, the house must be protected thermally from the overheating at the sunshining. like a huge shading. An architectural interpretation in the (extreme) moderate climate, like Korea, has always tried to satisfy the both opposite demands simultaneously. A facade, which divides out- and inside, has an ideal position to lead the regulated regional climatic conditions into the room. The Double Facade System(DFS) is well known as an innovative solution in the european countries, like Germany. It provides an reasonable alternative, which can achieve these goals at the same time. A Double Facade System provides an effective sunshade, which means a cooling energy reduction at the warm season. In addition, it enables a natural ventilation at the cold season with the preheating at the system as well as spring and autumn. An ordinary Single Facade System with a inside or outside sun blind provides a solution just for a specified season, like a summer or winter. But the Double Facade System can deal with the various climatic conditions in the moderate climate.

Spatio-Temporal Projection of Invasion Using Machine Learning Algorithm-MaxEnt

  • Climate change and invasive alien plant species (IAPs) are having a significant impact on mountain ecosystems. The combination of climate change and socio-economic development is exacerbating the invasion of IAPs, which are a major threat to biodiversity loss and ecosystem functioning. Species distribution modelling has become an important tool in predicting the invasion or suitability probability under climate change based on occurrence data and environmental variables. MaxEnt modelling was applied to predict the current suitable distribution of most noxious weed A. adenophora (Spreng) R. King and H. Robinson and analysed the changes in distribution with the use of current (year 2000) environmental variables and future (year 2050) climatic scenarios consisting of 3 representative concentration pathways (RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) in Bhutan. Species occurrence data was collected from the region of interest along the road side using GPS handset. The model performance of both current and future climatic scenario was moderate in performance with mean temperature of wettest quarter being the most important variable that contributed in model fit. The study shows that current climatic condition favours the A. adenophora for its invasion and RCP 2.6 climatic scenario would promote aggression of invasion as compared to RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 climatic scenarios. This can lead to characterization of the species as preferring moderate change in climatic conditions to be invasive, while extreme conditions can inhibit its invasiveness. This study can serve as reference point for the conservation and management strategies in control of this species and further research.

  • subway has became citizen's feet which can transport over 24 million people since the era of high oil price started. Because the request of passengers for more comfortable thermal comfort is drastically increasing, the importance of comfortable environment in the passenger car is more stressed. This paper suggests an indicator whether railroad car is fitted with suitable cooling and heating equipment by applying the international climatic testing method, UIC 553, 553-1. Specified ambient temperature, humidity, solar irradiation condition, as well as extreme outside condition, can be achieved by using an environmental chamber. The change temperature and humidity in the passenger space can be monitored to judge if the passenger room is nicely air-conditioned.

Stack Effect in High-Rise Buildings: A Review

  • This technical paper presents a detailed review of the stack effect phenomenon and of the associated implications pertaining to the design and construction of high-rise buildings in regions of extreme climatic conditions. The present review is focused on both the classical 'chimney' effect as well as on the reverse stack effect, which are respectively related to cold and hot climates. For the purposed of the work here presented, the ASHRAE (2013) design conditions of Astana (Kazakhstan) and Riyadh (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) were selected. A 230 m tall residential building of rectangular floor plan was numerically modelled in the context of the climatic conditions of the two abovementioned cities and a number of sensitivity analyses were performed, covering parametric changes of: temperature, façade air tightness, site wind speeds and wind directions.

  • Observations of extreme wind speeds in the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1980, corrected for the influence of upwind ground roughness and topography, have been analysed using the recently-developed "Improved Method of Independent Storms" (IMIS). The results have been used to compile two new maps of base wind speed and to confirm the climatic factors in current use. One map is 'irrespective' of wind direction and the other is 'equally weighted' by direction. The 'equally weighted' map is expected to be more consistently reliable and appropriate for use with the climatic factors for the design of buildings and structures.

  • We constructed the regional flood risk and damage magnitude using hazard and vulnerabilities which are climatic, hydrological, socio-economic, countermeasure, disaster probability components for DB construction on the GIS system. Also we developed the Excess Flood Vulnerability index estimation System(EFVS). By the construction of the System, we can perform the scientific flood management for the flood prevention and optional extreme flood defenses according to regional characteristics. In order to evaluate the performance of system, we applied EFVS to Anseong-chen in Korea, and the system's stabilization is appropriate to flood damage analysis.
