  • This paper proposed Enhanced Segmentized Clear Channel Assesment(ESCCA) for the IEEE 802.15.4 networks. This method divides original CCA into two groups to check precise channel status and perform additional CCA to increase throughput performance. Through the proposed method, the device can access the channel more often, so the transmission efficiency of the IEEE 802.15.4 network improves. To confirm the feasibility and usability of the proposed method, computer simulation has been performed. In the simulation, a star topology with one coordinator and a lot of devices is considered and the traffic flows are all one way, with the communication directed to the coordinator. Simulation results_ show the proposed method is improving maximum 10 kbps of throughput and decreasing maximum 15 of the average number of total CCA than IEEE 802.15.4 CCA method.

  • The effective channel usage is important for delivering a large number of packets in a short time, and it enhances channel utilization in sensor networks. Channel utilization is a good metric to illustrate MAC protocol efficiency. This paper presents the MAC(Media Access Control) Protocol that combines the advantages of B-MAC(Berkeley-MAC) and TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) to obtain high channel utilization. Basically, Using the backoff, CCA(Clear Channel Assessment) and LPL(Low Power Listen) mechanisms reduce collision and energy consumption, this protocol makes at the same time transmission method different depending on contention state and obtains high channel utilization. Through the simulation, this paper shows enhanced performance comparing with existing MAC Protocols.

  • LTE's extension for unlicensed spectrum called Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) is equipped with Listen-Before-Talk (LBT) designed similar with the backoff mechanism of Wi-Fi for coexistence. However, Wi-Fi's backoff mechanism has not evolved from its old design for compatibility with legacy devices, thus LAA's LBT is not efficient either in utilizing spectrum. If LAA operates with no Wi-Fi systems in proximity, it can run more efficient LBT. In this paper, we propose Narrowband Clear Channel Assessment (NCCA) for narrowband transmission. In NCCA, an LAA node performs LBT in either wide or each narrow bandwidth segment. This allows multiple LAA nodes to perform simultaneous transmissions in orthogonal bandwidth segments in the same time slot. We design four variants of NCCA implementation and model their performance using a mathematical model. The coexistence performance of NCCA with conventional wideband nodes and the accuracy of the model are shown via simulation.

  • Today's IEEE 802.11 WLANs(Wireless LANs) provide multiple transmission rates so that different rates can be exploited in an adaptive manner depending on the underlying channel condition in order to maximize the system performance. Many rate adaptation schemes have been proposed so far while most(if not all) of the commercial devices implement a simple open-loop rate adaptation scheme(i.e., without feedback from the receiver), called ARF(Automatic Rate Fallback) due to its simplicity. A key problem with such open-loop rate adaptation schemes is that they do not consider the collision effect, and hence, malfunction severely when many transmission failures are due to collisions. In this paper, we propose a novel rate-adaptation scheme, called CARA(Collision-Aware Rate Adaptation). The key idea of CARA is that the transmitter station combines adaptively the Request-to-Send/Clear-to-Send(RTS/CTS) exchange with the Clear Channel Assessment(CCA) functionality to differentiate frame collisions from frame transmission failures cause by channel errors. Therefore, compared with other open-loop rate adaptation schemes, CATA is more likely to make the correct rate adaptation decisions. Through extensive simulation runs, we evaluate our proposed scheme to show that our scheme yields significantly higher throughput performance than the existing schemes in both static and time-varying fading channel environments.

  • In this paper, a new clear channel assessment (CCA) method: cascaded-CCA, is proposed. The primary motivation for the proposed approach is to integrate the respective advantages of two standard CCA mechanisms, energy detect and preamble detect, to arrive at a new dual threshold CCA family that can provide greater flexibility towards tuning MAC performance. Cascaded-CCA integrates energy efficiency of the energy detector (ED) and the reliability of the preamble detector (PD). The probability of detection/false alarm and power consumption of cascaded-CCA in the CCA modules of IEEE 802.11b are analyzed and compared with ED and PD as an example. The performance of cascaded-CCA is explored via MATLAB simulations that implement the CCA modules and medium access control (MAC) protocol for IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4. Simulation results showed that cascaded-CCA improves the energy efficiency significantly compared to ED-only or PD-only CCA. In addition, ED, PD, and cascaded CCA are applied to a cognitive network scenario to validate the effectiveness of the proposed cascaded-CCA.

  • Spectral solar irradiances were observed using a visible and UV Multi-Filter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer on the rooftop of the Science Building at Yonsei University, Seoul ($37.57^{\circ}N$, $126.98^{\circ}E$, 86 m) during one year period in 2006. 1-min measurements of global(total) and diffuse solar irradiances over the solar zenith angle (SZA) ranges from $20^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$ were used to examine the effects of clouds and total optical depth (TOD) on enhancing four solar irradiance components (broadband 395-955 nm, UV channel 304.5 nm, visible channel 495.2 nm, and infrared channel 869.2 nm) together with the sky camera images for the assessment of cloud conditions at the time of each measurement. The obtained clear-sky irradiance measurements were used for empirical model of clear-sky irradiance with the cosine of the solar zenith angle (SZA) as an independent variable. These developed models produce continuous estimates of global and diffuse solar irradiances for clear sky. Then, the clear-sky irradiances are used to estimate the effects of clouds and TOD on the enhancement of surface solar irradiance as a difference between the measured and the estimated clear-sky values. It was found that the enhancements occur at TODs less than 1.0 (i.e. transmissivity greater than 37%) when solar disk was not obscured or obscured by optically thin clouds. Although the TOD is less than 1.0, the probability of the occurrence for the enhancements shows 50~65% depending on four different solar radiation components with the low UV irradiance. The cumulus types such as stratoculmus and altoculumus were found to produce localized enhancement of broadband global solar irradiance of up to 36.0% at TOD of 0.43 under overcast skies (cloud cover 90%) when direct solar beam was unobstructed through the broken clouds. However, those same type clouds were found to attenuate up to 80% of the incoming global solar irradiance at TOD of about 7.0. The maximum global UV enhancement was only 3.8% which is much lower than those of other three solar components because of the light scattering efficiency of cloud drops. It was shown that the most of the enhancements occurred under cloud cover from 40 to 90%. The broadband global enhancement greater than 20% occurred for SZAs ranging from 28 to $62^{\circ}$. The broadband diffuse irradiance has been increased up to 467.8% (TOD 0.34) by clouds. In the case of channel 869.0 nm, the maximum diffuse enhancement was 609.5%. Thus, it is required to measure irradiance for various cloud conditions in order to obtain climatological values, to trace the differences among cloud types, and to eventually estimate the influence on solar irradiance by cloud characteristics.

  • The conventional design of bridge piers against scour uses scour equations which involve number of uncertain flow, sediments and structural parameters. The inherent high uncertainties in these parameters suggest that the reliability of piers must be assessed to ensure desirable safety of bridges against scour. In the present study, a procedure for the reliability assessment of bridge piers, installed in main and flood channels, against scour has been presented. To study the influence of various random variables on piers' reliability sensitivity analysis has been carried out. To incorporate the reliability in the evaluation of safety factor, a simplified relationship between safety factor and reliability index has been proposed. Effects of clear water (flood channel) and live bed scour (main channel) are highlighted on pier reliability. In addition to these, an attempt has also been made to explain the failure of Black mount bridge of New Zealand based on its pier's reliability analysis. Some parametric studies have also been included to obtain the results of practical interest.

  • We have presented a routing mechanism that selects a route by considering channel statuses in order to fast transfer delay-sensitive data in WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks). The existing methods for real-time data transfer select a path whose latency is the shortest or the number of hops is the smallest. An algorithm to select a real-time transfer path based on link error rates according to the characteristic of wireless medium was also suggested. However, the propagation delay and retransmission timeout affected by link error rates are shorter than channel assessment time and backoff time. Therefore, the mechanism proposed in this paper estimated the time spent in using a clear channel and sending out a packet, which is based on channel backoff rates. A source node comes to select a route with the shortest end-to-end delay as a fast transfer path for real-time traffic, and sends data along the path chosen. We found that this proposed mechanism improves the speed of event-to-sink data transfer by performing experiments under different link error and channel backoff rates.

  • The present work is aimed at further discussing the effectiveness of dimensionless parameters recently proposed for the analysis of flow stability in heated channels with supercritical fluids. In this purpose, after presenting the main motivations for the introduction of these parameters in place of previously proposed ones, additional information on the theoretical bases and on the consequences of this development is provided. Stability maps, generated by an in-house program adapted from a previous application to boiling channels, are also shown for different combinations of the operating parameters. The maps are obtained as contour plots of an amplification parameter obtained from numerical discretization and subsequent linearization of governing equations; as such, they provide a quantitatively clear perspective of the effect of different boundary conditions on the stability of heated channels with supercritical fluids. In order to assess the validity of the assumptions at the basis of the in-house model, supporting calculations have been performed making use of the RELAP5/MOD3.3 computer code, detecting the values of the dimensionless parameters at the threshold for the occurrence of instability for a heated channel representative of SCWR proposed core configurations. The obtained results show reasonable agreement with the maps, supporting the applicability of the proposed scaling parameters for describing the dynamic behaviour of heated channels with supercritical fluids.
