The high plateaus in west China may provide suitable sites for astronomical observations with the institute's middle-range telescopes and possibly with larger telescopes. Under China-Japan collaborations for site survey in west China, we have been conducting searches for good sites and monitoring their characteristics over several years. As recent results of our site survey show, sites in west Tibet are revealed with a high possibility of good astronomical observations. Weather characteristics at Gar in Ali, Tibet, show its high clear-sky ratios, especially in winter, comparable to Mauna Kea, Hawaii. But it has some wind problem in winter, where stronger wind speeds, over 20m/sec, occur frequently even though the sky is clear. To find calmer sites, we have conducted numerical simulations for the Ali area using the Japan Meteorological Agency NonHydrostatic Model. We have found another site, named ZoZo Hill, near Gar. We will continue to monitor the Gar site to clarify weather characteristics over the whole year and hopefully start to negotiate for site monitoring at ZoZo Hill this year.

The main thrust of this paper is to investigate a practical way of generating the monthly averaged daily horizontal solar radiation in Korea. For estimating the horizontal solar radiation, the clearness index($K_T$) and the clearness number($C_N$) which are required for the use of Liu and Jordan's model and ASHRAE Clear Sky model were derived based on the measured weather data. Third-order polynomials returning $K_T$ and$C_N$ for a given location were derived as a function of cloud amount, month, date, latitude and longitude. The predicted monthly averaged daily horizontal solar radiation values were compared with those acquired from the established design weather data. The MBE(Mean Bias Error) and RMSE (Root Mean Squares for Error) between the predicted values and the measured data were near zero. It means that the suggested third-order polynomials for $K_T$ and $C_N$ have good applicability to Liu and Jordan's model and ASHRAE Clear Sky model.
Venetian blinds are used with windows to improve the uniformity ratio of illuminance and interior daylighting distribution under direct sunlit conditions. The main objective of Venetian blinds shading system is to obstruct direct sunlight and at the same time allow daylight to penetrate into the room. Venetian blinds would have greater effect on the interior daylighting condition under clear sky which has both skylight and sunlight than overcast sky which has only skylight. However, due to the lack of data, design and evaluation tools, it is difficult for architects to choose or install venetian blinds during the building design stages. The purpose of this study was to develop an analysis method for shading and daylighting effects of Venetian blinds using the RADIANCE program. The major variables related to the venetian blinds included blinds's slat angle and the ratio of slat width to window height, the radius slat of curvature and the building azimuth. In this study, a series of parametric physical mock-up model measurements and genblinds command in the RADIANCE simulations. The results of this study will provide building designers with the design data at early design stages.
This study examines the influence of control algorithms on dimming performance to determine appropriate control setting when direct/indirect lighting is controlled by a daylight dimming system. Computer simulation were performed for a small office with double skin envelope under various daylight conditions. A retractable fabric shading and Venetian blind were applied for internal and external envelopes under three CIE standard sky conditions. Unshielded and partially-shielded photosensors were used, and three control algorithms were applied for the sensors. In general, dimming level was too excessive due to the direct impact of light from lighting fixture to the photosensor. Providing insufficient lighting output, the unshielded photosensor completely failed to secure required illuminance under any daylight condition. When a partially-shielded photosensor was applied under clear sky, three setting points functioned effectively. Less sensitivity for the partially-shielded photosensor was effective to control the dimming system optimally with reasonable energy saving. However, the daylight dimming control system for direct/indirect lighting does not appear to be energy effective when photosensors without enough shielded area is installed on ceiling where light from fixtures reaches directly.
Active sunlighting systems have been applied to deliver sunlight into the indoor space where natural light is insufficient, mainly because of the congested high-rise buildings in urban areas. Among various active sunlighting systems, a mirror sunlighting system which is simple structure and economically reasonable has been widely used in different types of spaces such as underground, north facing place and atrium. This study was to evaluate the mirror sunlighting systems, which were consisted of the first mirror of $3.5m{\times}2.5m$, the eight sets of the second mirrors of $1.0m{\times}1.25m$ and a sun tracker. Ten sets of the systems were installed for 40 apartment living rooms, the configuration of $3.5m(W){\times}4.0m(D){\times}2.5m(H)$ where sunlighting were not possible due to high retaining walls located in the front of the living rooms. The 45 HOBO data logger sensors for the indoor illuminance were equipped and 2 Li-cor photometers for outdoor illuminance. Both indoor and outdoor horizontal illuminances were monitored every second from 9am to 3pm on 17 January 2010 under clear sky condition. The results showed that the indoor illuminance of installed mirror sunlighting system was significant relationship with outdoor illuminance and increased the indoor illuminance level by 4.2 times on the whole floor space, by 8 times on the sun patch space of 6m2 and even by 2 times on the no sun patch space. In addition, the luminous conditions of the living room under real sky conditions met the KS recommendation for difficult task (600-1000-1500 lux) such as sewing and reading on whole floor space and sun patch space. It was proved that the benefits of mirror sunlighting systems included an effective technology for penetrating daylight into indoors where sunlighting was not possible and improving occupants' satisfaction and health, and contributing to energy saving in apartments during daytime.

This paper presents the effect of solar collectors on the performance of solar tracking daylighting systems. A series of measurements were made for two different types of solar collectors mounted on double axis solar trackers: Parabolic dish concentrator and Fresnel Lens. Indoor light levels were measured at different locations of an office space (longitude: 126.33 E, latitude 33.45 N) as photo sensors were placed on a task plane 80 cm above the floor. To accurately monitor the applicability of the systems, measurements were performed under clear and overcast sky conditions with the roll-screen (on the south window) in the down position. Comparing the illuminance data, the system with Fresnel lens outperformed that of parabolic dish concentrator. On clear days, the former delivered the light levels of 400~600 lux on the task plane whereas the latter recorded 100~200 lux. Depending on the amount of cloud cover, on overcast days, illuminance readings fluctuated to some extent.

We have examined seasonal and annual means of clear-sky solar noon and daily erythemal ultraviolet-B irradiances measured in Anmyeon. The intensity of the EUV-B irradiance is mainly dependent on solar zenith angle (SZA) and total ozone amounts on clear day conditions. The daily maximum occurs near solar noon time and the highest monthly accumulated EUV-B is seen in July in Anmyeon. The maximum daily variation occurs in June and July due to precipitation and clouds. The 7-year trend of EUV-B irradiance shows that it is slightly increasing. Additionally, we could confirm that aerosol effects such as Asian Dust decreases the EUV-B irradiance reaching the ground surface by 35% to 60%. For more than 45% of the summer days, EUV-B irradiacne was high enough that the UV index registered higher than category Extremely High. This information will be very important for evaluation of the UV index for prevention of both skin cancer and ecosystem damages as well as to understand UV climatology over the Korean Peninsula.
The purpose of this study is to procure basic data to be used for solar power plant and concentrating collector designs. Site elevation is one of the major factors which influences the incoming insolation to the earth surface. Because the nonpermanent gases such as ozone, water vapor are unmixed components of the atmosphere and their concentrations are the function of height, the site elevation effects the relative proportion of the atmospheric constituents. We have measured solar radiation on Jiri Mt. (1,400m) and in Gurye area(115m) at the near same latitude. These values were then compared to obtain their characteristics and to investigate the potential for the solar utilization for both high and low elevated areas. From the experimental results, we concluded that 1) Daily mean horizontal global radiation and normal beam radiation on Mt. Jiri are 9.5%, and 35.3% higher than Gurye area respectively for a clear day. 2) A significant difference in atmospheric clearness index is observed between Mt. Jiri and Gurye areas.

Experiments were carried out to quantify the topographic effects on attenuation of sunshine in complex terrain and the results are expected to help convert the coarse resolution sunshine duration information provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) into a detailed map reflecting the terrain characteristics of mountainous watershed. Hourly shaded relief images for one year, each pixel consisting of 0 to 255 brightness value, were constructed by applying techniques of shadow modeling and skyline analysis to the 3m resolution digital elevation model for an experimental watershed on the southern slope of Mt. Jiri in Korea. By using a bimetal sunshine recorder, sunshine duration was measured at three points with different terrain conditions in the watershed from May 15, 2015 to May 14, 2016. The brightness values of the 3 corresponding pixel points on the shaded relief map were extracted and regressed to the measured sunshine duration, resulting in a brightness-sunshine duration response curve for a clear day. We devised a method to calibrate this curve equation according to sky condition categorized by cloud amount and used it to derive an empirical model for estimating sunshine duration over a complex terrain. When the performance of this model was compared with a conventional scheme for estimating sunshine duration over a horizontal plane, the estimation bias was improved remarkably and the root mean square error for daily sunshine hour was 1.7hr, which is a reduction by 37% from the conventional method. In order to apply this model to a given area, the clear-sky sunshine duration of each pixel should be produced on hourly intervals first, by driving the curve equation with the hourly shaded relief image of the area. Next, the cloud effect is corrected by 3-hourly 'sky condition' of the KMA digital forecast products. Finally, daily sunshine hour can be obtained by accumulating the hourly sunshine duration. A detailed sunshine duration distribution of 3m horizontal resolution was obtained by applying this procedure to the experimental watershed.

The purpose of this study was to compare the Solar Radiation(SR) and the Mean Radiant Temperature(MRT) under the shades of the three landscaping trees in clear summer daytimes. The trees were Lagerstroemia indica, Quercus palustris and Ulmus parvifolia. The solar radiation, the globe temperature and the air temperature were recorded every minute from the $1^{st}$ of April to the $30^{th}$ of September 2013 at a height of 1.1m above on the four monitoring stations, with four same measuring system consisting of a solar radiation sensor, two resistance temperature detectors(Pt-100), a black brass globe (${\phi}50mm$) and data acquisition systems. At the same time, the sky view photos were taken automatically hourly by three scouting cameras(lens angle: $60^{\circ}$) fixed at each monitoring station. Based on the 258 daily sky view photos and 6,640 records of middays(10 A.M.~2 P.M.) from the $1^{st}$ of June to the $30^{th}$ of August, the time serial differences of SR and MRT under the trees were analysed and compared with those of open sky, The major findings were as follows; 1. The average ratio of sky views screened by the canopies of Quercus palustris, Lagerstroemia indica and Ulmus parvifolia were 99%, 98% and 97%, and the SR were $106W/m^2$, $163W/m^2$ and $202W/m^2$ respectively, while the SR of open sky was $823W/m^2$. Which shows the canopies blocked at least 70% of natural SR. 2. The average MRT under the canopies of Quercus palustris, Lagerstroemia indica and Ulmus parvifolia were $30.34^{\circ}C$, $33.34^{\circ}C$ and $34.77^{\circ}C$ respectively, while that of open sky was $46.0^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it can be said that the tree canopies can reduce the MRT around $10{\sim}16^{\circ}C$. 3. The regression test showed significant linear relationship between the SR and MRT. In summary, the performances of the landscaping shade trees were very good at screening the SR and reducing the MRT at the outdoor of summer middays. Therefore, it can be apparently said that the more shade trees or forest at the outdoor, the more effective in conditioning the outdoor space reducing the MRT and the useless SR for human activities in summertime.
