Review of Health Effects Caused by Chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT) and Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) - Focusing on Humidifier Disinfectant-associated Lung Injury (HDLI) - (Chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT)과 Methylisothiazolinone (MIT)의 건강영향에 대한 고찰 - 가습기 살균제 폐 손상을 중심으로 -)

  • Objective: This study aimed to summarize the physiochemical properties, toxicity, and legal regulation of chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT) and/or methylisothiazolinone (MIT), review the health effects caused by exposure to CMIT/MIT, and evaluate the individual association of lung injury with the use of humidifier disinfectants (HD) containing a mixture of CMIT and MIT. Method: A literature review was conducted by searching keywords such as CMIT, MIT, health effect, dermatitis, asthma, and lung injury, either singly or combined. Results: Both CMIT and/or MIT were found to be associated with the development of several types of adverse health effects. In particular, respiratory diseases including asthma, nasal symptoms, cough, and rhinitis were caused by the use of products including CMIT or/and MIT. The mixture of CMIT/MIT has been banned in cosmetics. As of the end of 2017, nine patients who were confirmed to have HD associated lung injury (HDLI) were found to have used only an HD brand containing CMIT and MIT. Their responses regarding the name of the HD used could be trustworthy based on the short duration of HD use (less than six months) before the onset of HDLI and frequent use of HD per day. Conclusion: According to the toxicity and HDLI cases, the use of HD containing CMIT and /or MIT can cause fatal lung injury. Further study with manufacturers' assistance is necessary in order to obtain more clear evidence on the causal relationship since HDLI cases are being reported continuously.

Examine the Proper Operating Conditions in the Seawater Fluidized Bed filter System (해수 유동층 여과시스템의 적정 운용 조건)

  • Experiments were conducted to examine the differences in ammonia removal rates with the different filter media between sand and zeolite, the expanding rates between $50\%$ and $100\%$, the water temperatures between $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, and the ammonia loading rates between 2 mg/L and 5 mg/L in the seawater fluidized bed filters system (FBF). The 2.1 m high FBF (8.3 cm diameter) consisted of the clear acrylic for the upper half and a PVC pipe for the lower half, Sand and zeolite were used as the filter media in sizes of 0.5$\pm$0.1mm. Each biofilter contained 5.4 L of media. The ammonia removal rates of the biofilter were higher at the $25^{\circ}C$ water temperature than those of the biofilter at $15^{\circ}C$ water temperature, and higher at the $50\%$ expanding rate of filter media than those of the biofilter at $100\%$ expanding rate of filter media. Also, the ammonia removal rates of FBF were higher at 5 mg/L ammonia concentration than those of FBF at 2 mg/L ammonia concentration in rearing water. With these better conditions the ammonia removal rates of FBF per day are practically acceptable and ranged ken 80.6 to $210.6g/m^3$.

Quantitative Evaluation of Free CaO in Electric Arc Furnace Reduction Slag using the Ethylene Glycol Method (에틸렌 글리콜법을 이용한 전기로 환원슬래그의 Free CaO 정량 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Blast furnace slag has been actively used as a substitute for cement in the construction field with high value-added through resource recycling research. However, most of the slag cannot find a clear recycling purpose. This is because some slags contain unstable materials and are used for road-use asphalt and embankment, which are low value-added materials. Electric arc furnace reduction slag(ERS) has been reported to contain a large amount of unstable free CaO due to deoxidation and component adjustment. In this study, free CaO of ERS which is generated in Korean steelmakers is quantitatively evaluated by using ethylene glycol method. As a result of free CaO quantitative evaluation of ERS, it was confirmed that there is a big difference according to the location of each field. In addition, ERS generally existed in powder form as undifferentiated characteristics, but it was confirmed that free CaO content was different due to hydration product in aggregate form due to water treatment. In addition, free CaO is an amorphous material and its crystallization characteristics are different due to the influence of temperature when it is cooled. ERS requires a long-term aging period as it contains a lot of free CaO.

  • Since 2005, when "The Mobility Enhancement for the Mobility Impaired Act" was enacted, special transport systems(SPS) has been introduced by each responsible local entity. For its efficient operations and service enhancements, a clear understanding of travel patterns of SPS users is required. Yet we currently have a very limited understanding about them due to a lack of necessary data. This study represents an attempt to provide a better understanding of SPS user's travel patterns with the data generated by Gyeongsangnam-do SPS Call Center. The data include the number, time and day of calls, origins and destinations of callers, types of callers' impairement etc. The data thus allow one to analyze users' travel patterns, including area-wide O-D patterns. There were a number of interesting findings. For example, wheelchair users are only about 42% and the trips are made mostly on non-peak daytime periods. The results are expected to provide a helpful information not just for Center's SPS operations, but for other local entities that are interested in developing similar call centers as well. By refining the SPS system, periodic patterns of callers could be identified in the future.

Fermentation Characteristics of Takju Prepared with Old Rice (묵은 쌀(古米)을 사용한 탁주의 발효 특성)

  • Old rice showed higher initial pasting and peak viscosity temperatures than new rice. Reducing sugar contents of rice harvested in 1998 were lowest 24hr after digestion with saccharification enzyme, but similar after 36hr, among rice samples tested. Fermentation characteristics and preference of Takju made by fermenting raw rice harvested from 1998 to 2001 far 7 days were investigated. Alcohol contents during Takju brewing rapidly increased for 5 days to 17.3-18.1%, and were 17.5-18.2% on day 7, with those of Takju brewed with rice harvested in 1998 being highest in both cases. Sensory evaluation results showed Takju fermented with rice harvested in 2000 had highest sweetness, preference, and sourness, and that fermented with rice harvested in 1999 had highest sourness, but no voluntariness was shown between each other (meaning not clear). Moisture contents and gelatinization characteristics of old and new rice were slightly different, although factors adversely affecting Takju such as flavor of old rice did not appear in sensory evaluation probably because old rice was stored in rice bran farm for long times and used after milling. Results reveal surplus old rice could be utilized for Takju brewing.

Enhancement of Ozone and Carbon Monoxide Associated with Upper Cut-off Low during Springtime in East Asia

  • In order to verify the enhancement of ozone and carbon monoxide (CO) during springtime in East Asia, we investigated weather conditions and data from remote sensors, air quality models, and air quality monitors. These include the geopotential height archived from the final (FNL) meteorological field, the potential vorticity and the wind velocity simulated by the Meteorological Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5), the back trajectory estimated by the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model, the total column amount of ozone and the aerosol index retrieved from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), the total column density of CO retrieved from the Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT), and the concentration of ozone and CO simulated by the Model for Ozone and Related Chemical Tracers (MOZART). In particular, the total column density of CO, which mightoriginate from the combustion of fossil fuels and the burning of biomass in China, increased in East Asia during spring 2000. In addition, the enhancement of total column amounts of ozone and CO appeared to be associated with both the upper cut-off low near 500 hPa and the frontogenesis of a surface cyclone during a weak Asian dust event. At the same time, high concentrations of ozone and CO on the Earth's surface were shown at the Seoul air quality monitoring site, located at the surface frontogenesis in Korea. It was clear that the ozone was invaded by the downward stretched vortex anomalies, which included the ozone-rich airflow, during movement and development of the cut-off low, and then there was the catalytic photochemical reaction of ozone precursors on the Earth's surface during the day. In addition, air pollutants such as CO and aerosol were tracked along both the cyclone vortex and the strong westerly as shown at the back trajectory in Seoul and Busan, respectively. Consequently, the maxima of ozone and CO between the two areas showed up differently because of the time lag between those gases, including their catalytic photochemical reactions together with the invasion from the upper troposphere, as well as the path of their transport from China during the weak Asian dust event.

Convenient Screening Method of Chinese Cabbage for Resistance to Plasmodiophora brassicae Using Soil-Drenching Inoculation (관주 접종법을 이용한 효율적인 배추 뿌리혹병 저항성 검정법)

  • Clubroot caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae is a widespread disease that causes serious problems in many brassica growing areas. To establish more simple and reliable clubroot screening method of Chinese cabbage to P. brassicae using soil-drenching inoculation, the development of clubroot on Chinese cabbage according to several conditions such as soil type, inoculum concentration of P. brassicae GN-1 (race 9), plant growth stage and incubation period was studied. In a commercial horticulture nursery media soil (CNS), disease severity of the seedling according to inoculum concentration increased in a dose-dependent manner, but did not in mixture of CNS and upland soil (1:1, v/v). To facilitate and acquire precise result of resistance screening of Chinese cabbage to clubroot, 10-day-old seedlings should be inoculated by drenching the spore suspension of P. brassicae to give inoculum density of $4.0{\times}10^8$ spores/pot. To develop the disease, the inoculated seedlings were incubated in a growth chamber at $20^{\circ}C$ for 3 days, and then cultivated in a greenhouse ($25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$) for five weeks. Under the optimum conditions, 25 clubroot-resistant (CR) and 3 clubroot-susceptible (CS) cultivars were tested for resistance to P. brassicae. All CR cultivars showed very clear resistance response, on the other hand all CS cultivars severly infected with the pathogen. The results suggest that this method is efficient screening method of Chinese cabbage for resistance to clubroot disease.

Cell Biological Studies on Brain Formation at the Early Stage of Chick Embryogenesis (초기계배의 뇌 형성에 관한 세포 생물학적 연구)

  • The effect of tryptophan on brain formation at the early stage of chick embryo has been investigated morphologically using electron microscope. The electron micrographs of cerebral cortex cells of $5\\sim10$ day old chick embryo, which received 1.0mg of tryptophan showed that the irregularity, evagination and disruption of nuclear membrane and nuclear chromatin condensation, nucleolar chromatin margination and segragation. Hypertrophy of stalks, vesicles, and vacuoles can be seen and dilation and vesiculation of rough endoplamic reticulum and polysome disaggregation occured. Protein and RNA levels and the activity of several enzymes such as lactate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase of tryptophan administered group were significantly lower than those of control group suggesting that the tryptophan administration depressed protein biosynthesis resulting in the decrease of enzyme activity. It was found that serotonin content of egg yolk which has been incubated for 10 days were as much as three times that of control egg yolk. It is not clear whether the increase of serotonin content might inhibit intracellular yolk granule degradation which might result in malformation of chick embryo, but it is likely that tryptophan administration might depress protein biosynthesis, consequently, the enzyme biosynthesis would be impaired. This might give rise to improper development of chick embryo.

Egg Cholesterol is not related with Heart Disease : A Review (계란의 콜레스테롤은 심장질환과 무관 : 총설)

  • The objective of this literature review is to prove that egg cholesterol is not related with heart disease based upon research results of the past 50 years. As a result, it was reported that the dietary intake cholesterol did not affected cholesterol levels in blood. Moreover, it was reported that adding two eggs a day to a healthful diet did not significantly increase blood cholesterol levels in young or middle-aged men and women with normal or even moderately elevated blood cholesterol levels. Cholesterol feeding studies demonstrate that dietary cholesterol increases both LDL and HDL cholesterol with little change in the LDL : HDL ratio as an important risk indicator of heart disease. Especially a good indicator in the elderly from increased HDL-cholesterol, so cholesterol intake appeared to be good for the prevention of heart disease. Thus the consumption of eggs is bad for your health is not known as a fact, but rather was found to be effective in preventing heart disease. Also, all consumers may consume without worrying because there are no official standards regarding egg intake. Therefore, these evidences would clear up some misunderstanding and mistrust on egg cholesterol regarding the consumption of egg as well as give some desirable advice on how to maintain healthy life.

The Effects of Soybean Boiling Waste Liquor on the Enhancement of Lactic Acid Fermentation during Korean Traditional kanjang Mash Maturing (한국 재래식 간장덧 발효시 대두 자숙 폐액 첨가가 젖산발효 촉진에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to evaluate the effects of addition of soybean boiling waste liquor (SBWL) and sugar and inoculation of the lactic acid bacteria and yeast starter culture in Korean traditional kanjang mash, three types of kanjang were prepared in a clay pot of 100 l volume and compared the characteristics of lactic acid fermentation. The mashing compositions of the types of kanjang were as follows: (1) control treatment mash was prepared with meju : 20% salt solution (1:4) and SBWL, (2) kanjang mash with 3.5% added sugar to the control type mash and (3) kanjang mash with 3.5% added sugar and inoculation of the lactic acid bacteria and yeast starter culture 35 days after mashing to the control type mash. (1), (2) and (3) of kanjang mash were found to be effective in increasing the lactic acid content and improving the organoleptic characteristics of kanjang. But the effect of yeast starter culture was not clear because osmophilic yeasts were inhibited by metabolite(acetic acid) produced by lactic acid bacteria. The lactic acid content of (1), (2) and (3) kanjang was 2.05, 2.38 and 2.91% respectively in 90 day-matured kanjang.
