Global efforts are focused on achieving carbon neutrality due to the increases in the levels of greenhouse gases. Moreover, the greenhouse gases generated from the disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) are the primary sources of emissions in South Korea. In this study, we conducted the biological conversion of syngas (CO, H2, and CO2) generated from MSW gasification. The MSW-derived syngas was used as a feed source for cultivating Eubacterium limosum KIST612, and pressurization was employed to enhance gas solubility in culture broth. However, the pH of the medium decreased owing to the pressurization because of the CO2 in the syngas and the cultivation-associated organic acid production. The replacement of conventional HEPES buffer with a phosphate buffer led to an approximately 2.5-fold increase in acetic acid concentration. Furthermore, compared with the control group, the pressurized reactor exhibited a maximum 8.28-fold increase in the CO consumption rate and a 3.8-fold increase in the H2 consumption rate.

We describe an ion-surface scattering apparatus newly developed to investigate the reactive scattering process of low-energy alkali-metal ions at surfaces. The apparatus consists of an alkali-metal ion gun that is rotatable by 360°, a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) with an ion energy analyzer, a sample manipulator with a heating-and-cooling stage, and an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) chamber that houses these components. Preliminary experimental results obtained from the apparatus are presented on angular and energy distributions of the ions scattered from clean Pt(111) and water-adsorbed Pt surfaces.
With the increasing demand of environmentally clean machining in recent years, the use of coolants has been restricted extensively. In this paper, a multiple comparison method(Tukey's HSD method) is proposed to choose the optimum level of coolant necessary for an efficient and environmentally clean machining. The cutting temperature, specific cutting energy, and surface roughness in turning process are analysed by ANOVA(Analysis Of Variance) and Tukey's HSD method. From the experimental results and statistical analysis, it is found that the optimum condition of coolant level is 10 ml/min with 6% mix ratio, which is almost half of the commonly used level.
Among the various solar-hydrogen production techniques a combination of a photovoltaic (PV) and an electrolytic cell into one single system, a monolithic PV-electrolytic cell, has been suggested as a promising one in terms of efficiency and stability. In this mini-review, we describe our recent efforts on the fabrication of the monolithic PV-electrolytic cell. Particularly, we focus on the electrocatalysts for water oxidation and its fabrication method suitable for a monolithic PV-electrolytic cell. We also introduce proto-type devices with a dye-sensitized solar cell module and an InGaP/GaAs photoelectrodes.
