  • Ash remaining after coal combustion was used as a catalyst support for tar steam reforming with various proportions of $Al_2O_3$ added for higher reforming efficiency. At a constant Ni content of 12 wt%, a coal ash and $Al_2O_3$ were mixed at a ratio of 5:5, 7:3, 9:1. As a result, the catalytic activity for toluene steam reforming was improved by adding $Al_2O_3$ at $500-600^{\circ}C$. The catalysts with ratio 7:3 and 5:5 reached toluene conversion of 100% above $700^{\circ}C$. When comparing the catalysts in which the coal ash and $Al_2O_3$ mixed at a ratio of 5:5 and 7:3 with the Ni/Al catalyst, it was concluded that this coal ash catalyst has efficient catalytic performance.

  • Vapor adsorption of hydrocarbon has been studied for stabilization after drying low-rank coal. The surface characteristics and the propensity of spontaneous combustion were observed for stabilized coal which was maintained with hydrocarbons as stabilizer at several conditions of residence time and temperature. Surface area of micropores in coal mainly decreased after vapor adsorption. As residence time and temperature of adsorption process increased, the propensity of spontaneous combustion decreased. The type of hydrocarbons did not effect on the propensity of spontaneous combustion. As the analysis results of this work, the amount of hydrocarbon adsorbates required to stabilize dried coal was 0.5 wt% or less of coal, and the stabilizing effect was induced by adsorption of low-molecular-weight hydrocarbons.

  • Low-priced hydrogen is required in petrochemical industry for producing low-sulfur oil, and upgrading low-grade crude oil since environmental regulations have been reinforced. Steel industry can produce hydrogen from by-product gases such as Blast Furnace Gas (BFG), Coke Oven Gas (COG), and Linze Donawitz Gas (LDG) with water gas shift (WGS) reaction by catalysis. In this study, we optimized conditions for WGS reaction with commercial catalysts by BFG and LDG. In particular, the influence on activity of gas-hourly-space-velocity, and $H_2O/CO$ ratios at different temperatures were investigated. As a result, 99.9%, and 97% CO conversion were showed with BFG, and LDG respectively under $350^{\circ}C$ High Temperature Shift (HTS), $200^{\circ}C$ Low Temperature Shift (LTS), 3.0 of $H_2O/CO$, and $1500h^{-1}$ of GHSV. Furthermore, 99.9% CO conversion lasted for 250 hours with BFG as feed gas.

  • Coal is abundantly available compared to other energy sources and is used as a versatile energy resource worldwide. To address the environmental issues stemming from conventional coal utilization, efforts are underway to develop clean coal utilization technologies, with IGCC technology being a notable example. In IGCC plants, coal is subjected to a CMD process where both drying and pulverization are achieved by supplying hot air. However, if the temperature of the supplied hot air is excessively high, it can lead to devolatilization and spontaneous combustion, thereby compromising the stable operation of the CMD process. This study aimed to measure the devolatilization and spontaneous combustion temperatures of different types of bituminous coal, and to explore their correlations with the characteristics of the coals. Six coal types exhibited devolatilization between 350 and 400 ℃, while three coal types showed devolatilization at temperatures exceeding 400 ℃. Spontaneous combustion ℃curred in one coal type below 100 ℃, six coal types between 100 and 150 ℃, and two coal types above 150 ℃. The measured initiation temperatures were compared with the coal characteristics including the oxygen, moisture, Fe2O3, and CaO content, the H/C ratio, and the O/C ratio to establish correlations. Regression analysis was used to calculate the regression coefficients and determination coefficients for each ignition temperature. It was found that 52.44% of the FC/VM data significantly influenced the volatile matter ignition temperature, and 59.10% of the Fe2O3 data significantly affected the spontaneous combustionignition temperature.

  • Solid ash-free coal (AFC) samples recovered from solvent-extracted solution by vacuum drying, dilution precipitation and spray drying methods were compared in terms of physical properties and chemical structure. AFC was prepared by using Kideco coal (Indonesian sub-bituminous coal) and polar N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent as raw materials. The physical properties of the AFCs were characterized with proximate, ultimate, and calorific value analysis. In analyzing the chemical structure, FTIR and NMR were used. the proximate analysis showed much reduced ash in the AFCs compared to parent raw coal. The FTIR result showed that the extraction solvent was not fully removed from the AFC prepared by vacuum drying. However, the solvent was not detected in the AFC recovered by using dilution precipitation. Dilution precipitation has advantages over the other two methods, since it can be done at relatively low temperature and separate ash-free coal from extraction solvent more effectively.

  • Carbon-rich coal can be utilized as a fuel for direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC). However, left-behind ash after the electrochemical oxidation may hinder the electrochemical reactions. In this study, we produced ash-free coal (AFC) by thermal extraction and then tested it as a fuel for DCFC. DCFC was built based on solid oxide electrolyte and the electrochemical performance of AFC mixed with $K_2CO_3$ was compared with AFC only. Significantly enhanced power density was found by catalytic steam gasification of AFC. However, an increase of the power density by catalytic pyrolysis was negligible. This result indicated that a catalyst activated the steam gasification reactions, producing much more $H_2$ and thus increasing the power density, compared to AFC only. Results of a quantitative analysis showed much improved kinetics in AFC with $K_2CO_3$ in agreement with DCFC results. A secondary phase of potassium on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) surface was observed after the cell operation. This probably caused poor long-term behavior of AFC with $K_2CO_3$. A thin YSZ (30 ${\mu}m$ thick) was found to be higher in the power density than 0.9 mm of YSZ.

  • This paper presents results on $CO_2$ gasification of 17 raw coals containing a wide range of volatile matter (21-57 wt%). The gasification is performed using a TGA under $CO_2$ and also under $N_2$ atmosphere. An amount of weight loss with increasing temperature is proportional to that of volatile matter in a coal under $N_2$ atmosphere. Reactivity of $CO_2$ gasification also increases with a content of volatile matter. However, the correlation is a little scattered. Oxygenated functional groups in a coal are generally reactive and therefore, an increase in O/C ratio leads to enhanced reactivity. However, $CO_2$ reactivity is affected by neither H/C ratio nor a content of ashes that possibly activate the gasification reaction. These findings are also applicable to steam coal gasification and the reactivity series are confirmed in the test at a fixed bed reactor.

  • The investigation of clean and environment-friendly coal utilization technology is actively progressed due to high oil price and serious climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, the plasma gasification was performed using a 6kW microwave plasma unit under various reaction conditions: the particle sizes of coal ($45{\mu}m-150{\mu}m$), $O_2$/fuel ratio (0 - 1.3), and steam/fuel ratio (0 - 1.5). The $H_2$ composition decreases with decreasing coal particle size. With increasing $O_2$/fuel ratio, the $H_2$ composition in the syngas decreased while the $CO_2$ composition increased. As the steam/fuel ratio increased from 0 to 1.5, the $H_2$ composition in the syngas increased while the $CO_2$ composition decreased. From the results, it was proven that the variation of syngas composition greatly affected by $O_2$/fuel ratio than steam/fuel ratio. The $H_2$ composition in the syngas, carbon conversion, and cold gas efficiency increased with increasing plasma power.

  • Study on clean and efficient utilization technology for low rank coal with high moisture content is actively ongoing due to limited reserves of petroleum and of high grade coal and serious climate change caused by fossil fuel usage. In the present study, supercritical water gasification of low rank coal was performed. With increasing reaction temperature, content of combustible gases such as $H_2$ and $CH_4$ in the syngas increased while the $CO_2$ content decreased. As the reaction pressure increased from 210 to 300 bar, the $CO_2$ content in the syngas increased while the hydrocarbon gas content decreased. The $H_2$ and $CH_4$ content in the syngas increased slightly with pressure. With the addition of Pd, Pt, and Ru catalysts, it was possible to improve the production of $H_2$. Moreover, the increase of active metal content in the catalyst increased the $H_2$ productivity. The Ru catalyst shows the best performance for increasing the $H_2$ content in the syngas, while decreasing the $CO_2$ content.
