Sulfur emission control in coal gasification plants implies the removal of $H_2S$ from the fuel gas in the gas clean-up system. In this study, the effects of particle size of sorbents, temperature of sulfidation and sorbent characteristics on the $H_2S$ removal efficiency of manganese ore were investigated. Experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of $H_2S$ was optimum when the temperature was about $700^{\circ}C$. And that the smaller particle size, the higher the $H_2S$ removal efficiency, but that was not effective very much. As the temperature increases, the reactivity of sorbents has lowered because agglomeration of sorbents increased the intraparticle transport resistance. This phenomenon was confirmed by SEM photographs. The equilibrium ratio ($P_{H_2O}/P_{H_2S}$) obtained by experiments is represented as a ${\log}(P_{H_2O}/P_{H_2S})=5653/T-3.7909$. It was showed that the natural manganese ore could be used as a sorbent because its capacity for $H_2S$ removal is equivalent to the eariler developed sorbents.

Oil shale is the sedimentary rock containing kerogen, which is one of the abundant unconventional fuel. In the pyrolysis process, oil, gas and coke are produced from the decomposition of oil shale. In this study, TGA and the continuous pyrolysis of oil shale have been investigated for the clean conversion of oil shale. Effects of reaction temperature and residence time on the pyrolysis conversion and oil production rate have been determined. Conversion of oil shale increases with increasing the reaction temperature and residence time. Optimum conditions for oil production were reaction temperature of $450{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ at the residence time of 30 min.

Aeration by using diffusers usually requires approximately 50~90% of the total electricity needed to operate WWTP (WasteWater Treatment Plant)s. Accurate evaluation of the oxygen transfer efficiency for an aeration system, and recommendation of a better alternative may help saving WWTP operational costs. Appropriate techniques and methods to achieve this purpose have not been introduced in Korea. In this study, in-process analysis was performed for a coarse bubble aeration system by the off-gas method to evaluate its applicability in Korea. To accomplish this analysis, an off-gas test, unsteady-state clean water test and steady-state off-gas column test was conducted and comparisons to other aeration systems were made. The ${\alpha}$ and the F estimated from the results of the unsteady-state clean water test and the steady-state off-gas column test were 0.61 and 0.90 respectively in a coarse bubble aeration system. The comparison of P.E tube diffusers laid out single spiral roll and ceramic dome diffusers laid out full floor coverage showed that the oxygen transfer efficiency of the coarse bubble aeration system was less than or similar to other aeration systems. But, airflow rates per unit area were 4~5 times greater than other aeration systems. In regards to the oxygen transfer efficiency for airflow rates per unit area, a retrofit to higher efficiency diffusers was urgently needed. This study showed proved that off-gas methods can apply to evaluate diffuser performances to estimate operating factors and to compare other aeration systems in Korea.
Thermodynamic equations for the electric power and temperature in a turbo expander generator (TEG) using pressure energy in a natural gas line are derived. From the equations, it was shown that dominant factor is not the pressure difference but the pressure ratio. The high energy level in the inlet of TEG can be made from nearly no expense of electric energy input, which means TEG can be treated as one of newly available clean energy source. If a post heating method is chosen to heat up expanded natural gas, the usage of cold energy is possible without a refrigeration cycle. The combined TEG and refrigeration system enhances economic benefit much more.
In early 90s the worldwide awareness about the energy crisis and global warming had been increased and emission reduction (by improving energy efficiency), as well as increasing the capacity of clean and renewable energies, showed themselves as the most important steps towards the sustainable development approach. However, investigations on Iran's environmental situation show huge decline in recent decades and apparently there is no sense of urgency about these issues through the vision of Iranian politicians. In this article the idea of replacing the old gas turbines of Polkalleh natural gas compressor station - as one of the main compressor stations of Iran - with newer and more efficient gas turbines is evaluated, emphatically for reducing greenhouse gases emissions and their environmental costs and decreasing natural gas consumption as well. Clearly such idea is costly, but analyzing its economic impacts, huge declines in annual costs and greenhouse gases emissions can be seen as well. So an investment about $95 million can decrease 40% of Polkalleh compressor station annual costs, 25% of natural consumption and 30% of $CO_2$ and $NO_x$ emissions. Besides the simple payback period of this investment is about 2.5 years from the cut-expenses of annual costs.

Cutting procedures where qualities are determined by various demand factors largely influences shipbuilding productivity. Particularly, defects in cutting shapes and cutting surface results in delay for post shipbuilding stages such as in welding and assemblage lines which could become factors for reduced economic viability of the project. Existing cutting procedures utilize fossil fuels such as propane or ethylene as the main fuel component and these methods applied particularly to ship plate cutting gives relatively slow cutting speed and generates large quantities of harmful and sometimes poisonous polluting fumes of which warrants an urgent need to look for alternative cutting methods. Recent introduction of hydrox gas generated by electrically dissociating water into hydrogen and oxygen components to be utilize as an alternative cutting fuel has resulted not just in visible improvement on cutting quality and speed over the existing methods but it has also been welcomed as an environmentally friendly clean fuel source. This paper has been prepared to serve as the basis for accommodating this environmentally friendly hydrox gas cutting method into actual working environment by observing and recording hydrox gas cutting thermal characteristics.

Study on clean and efficient utilization technology for low rank coal with high moisture content is actively ongoing due to limited reserves of petroleum and of high grade coal and serious climate change caused by fossil fuel usage. In the present study, supercritical water gasification of low rank coal was performed. With increasing reaction temperature, content of combustible gases such as $H_2$ and $CH_4$ in the syngas increased while the $CO_2$ content decreased. As the reaction pressure increased from 210 to 300 bar, the $CO_2$ content in the syngas increased while the hydrocarbon gas content decreased. The $H_2$ and $CH_4$ content in the syngas increased slightly with pressure. With the addition of Pd, Pt, and Ru catalysts, it was possible to improve the production of $H_2$. Moreover, the increase of active metal content in the catalyst increased the $H_2$ productivity. The Ru catalyst shows the best performance for increasing the $H_2$ content in the syngas, while decreasing the $CO_2$ content.

The combustion characteristics of methane/hydrogen pre-mixed flame have been investigated with swirl stabilized flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor with constant heat load of 5.81 kW. Hydrogen/methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through a burner nozzle with different degrees of swirl angle. The effects of hydrogen addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using particle image velocimetry (PIV), micro-thermocouples, various optical interference filters and gas analyzers to provide information about flow velocity, temperature distributions, and species concentrations of the reaction field. The results show that higher swirl intensity creates more recirculation flow, which reduces the temperature of the reaction zone and, consequently, reduces the thermal NO production. The distributions of flame radicals (OH, CH, C2) are dependent more on the swirl intensity than the percentage of hydrogen added to methane fuel. The NO concentration at the upper part of the reaction zone is increased with an increase in hydrogen content in the fuel mixture because higher combustibility of hydrogen assists to promote faster chemical reaction, enabling more expansion of the gases at the upper part of the reaction zone, which reduces the recirculation flow. The CO concentration in the reaction zone is reduced with an increase in hydrogen content because the amount of C content is relatively decreased.

For the conversion of domestic waste-wood into energy, a fixed bed gasifier ($0.9 m{\times}2.4 m$) having the capacity of 2 ton/day was designed and constructed. The dual knife valve was used to feed waste-wood of which size was 3~5 cm and a rotary stoker system was installed in the bottom of gasifier. The pilot gasification system consisted of feeding system, fixed bed gasifier, gravity fine particle collector, heat exchanger for syngas cooling, ID fan, and cooling tower. The operation temperatures of gasifier were $700{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ and the concentrations of syngas were CO: 25~40 vol%, $H_2$: 7~12 vol%, $CH_4$: 2~4 vol%, $CO_2$: 12~24 vol%. The calorific value of syngas was $1100{\sim}1500kcal/Nm^3$ and was enough to be applied in the industrial combustor. Also the gas engine was operated by using syngas from biomass gasifier and produced 1~4 kW of power.
A two-column six-step pressure swing adsorption(PSA) process was to study separation of hydrogen from hydrogen and methane($60_{vol}%/40_{vol}%$) binary system onto activated carbon adsorbent. The effects of the feed gas pressure, the feed flowrate and the P/F(purge to feed) ratio on the process performance were evaluated. The cyclic steady-states of PSA process were reached to after 15 cycles. $H_2$ purity increases according as the P/F ratio and pressure increase and the feed flow rate decreases; however, $H_2$ recovery shows an opposite phenomena to the purity. PSA process simulation studied to find optimum operation condition. In the results, 22 LPM feed flowrate, 11 atm adsorption pressure and 0.10 P/F ratio might be optimal values to obtain more than 75% recovery and 99% purity hydrogen. In this study was non-isothermal and non-adiabatic model considering linear driving force(LDF) model and Langmuir-Freundlich adsorption isotherm considered to compare between prediction and experimental data.
