Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the opening and protrusive mandibular movements between Class I and Class II malocclusions in healthy adolescents by clinical and axiographic evaluations. Methods: Mechanical axiography was performed on non-orthodontically treated, temporomandibular disorder (TMD)-free adolescents (12 - 16 years) with Class I (n = 38, 16 boys, 22 girls) or Class II (n = 40, 19 boys, 21 girls) malocclusion. Opening and protrusive movements were measured clinically and axiographically. Intergroup comparisons were evaluated by t-tests. Results: In opening movement, the maximum clinical opening capacity was significantly different (p ${\leq}$ 0.05) between the groups. In protrusive movement, the Class II group had significantly greater maximum clinical protrusion (p < 0.001) and maximum axiographic protrusive length (p < 0.01) than the Class I group. No significant difference in the other opening and protrusive axiographic measurements was observed. Conclusions: TMD-free adolescents with Class II malocclusion have increased protrusive capacity compared with TMD-free adolescents with Class I malocclusion; however, the detected differences could be normal variations during adolescence.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term changes in the pharyngeal airway dimensions after functional appliance treatment in adolescents with skeletal Class II malocclusions. Methods: Pharyngeal airway dimensions were compared between subjects with skeletal Class II malocclusions (n = 24; mean age: $11.6{\pm}1.29$ years) treated with a Class II bionator and age-matched control subjects with skeletal Class I occlusions (n = 24; mean age: $11.0{\pm}1.21$ years) using a series of lateral cephalograms obtained at the initial visit (T0), after treatment (T1), and at the completion of growth (T2). Results: The length of the nasopharyngeal region was similar between adolescents with skeletal Class I and Class II malocclusions at all time points, while the lengths of the upper and lower oropharyngeal regions and the pharyngeal airway areas were significantly smaller in the skeletal Class II adolescents before treatment when compared to the control adolescents (p < 0.05). However, following treatment with a functional appliance, the skeletal Class II adolescents had increased pharyngeal airway dimensions, which became similar to those of the control subjects. Conclusions: Functional appliance therapy can increase the pharyngeal airway dimensions in growing adolescents with skeletal Class II malocclusions, and this effect is maintained until the completion of growth.

The purpose of this study is to investigate factors influencing the upper airway dimensions in skeletal Class II children and adolescents. In total, 67 patients were selected. Airway volume and minimal cross-sectional area were three-dimensionally assessed. Craniofacial morphology and skeletal maturity were assessed on generated two-dimensional cephalograms. The measurements were analyzed using Mann-Whitney test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Upper airway dimensions were significantly smaller in pre-peak stage group, and positively associated with age. Anterior facial height and age were the most relevant factors for airway volume. Mandibular width and age were the most relevant factors for minimal cross-sectional area. Upper airway dimensions were significantly associated with age, skeletal maturity and craniofacial morphology in all three planes.
The purpose of this study was to quantitate differences in the nature of the correction of Angle's Class II div 1 malocclusion dependent on the patient's age at the time of treatment. The sample consisted of 27 female patients in the adolescent group with a mean initial records age of 11.8 years and 25 female patients in the adult group with a mean starting age of 21.1 yrs. Lateral cephalometric head films were taken before and after orthodontic treatment with four bicuspid extraction. The results were obtained as follows. 1. None of maxillary skeletal parameters exhibited a significantly different in treatment change between adolescents and adults. But, in mandibular skeletal measurements, there were significant differences between two groups. (P<0.05) 2. Measures of vertical dimension in the adults remained unchanged during treatment, reflecting the effective absence of growth. 3. The steepness of occlusal plane in the adults changed significantly.(P<0.05) In contrast, the adolescents displayed stability of the occlusal plane. 4. According to the Johnston analysis, there was a significant difference in the total molar correction between two groups.(P<0.05) 5. According to the Johnston analysis, differential mandibular growth in the adolescents contrubuted $63\%$ of the total molar correction, with orthodontic tooth movement accounting for the remaining $37\%$. In the adults, dental movement comprised $99\%$ of the correction.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects and optimal timing for treatment of class II malocclusion with functional appliances in children and adolescents. A group of 30 patients with class II malocclusion were divided into 3 groups according to their use of functional appliance: Twin block, Activator, Fränkel appliance. The group was also divided into 2 groups according to the cervical vertebrae maturation method. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were analyzed pretreatment (T0) and posttreatment (T1). Among the functional appliances, treatment with Twin block and Activator showed significant increase in the length of the mandible (Co-Gn) and the lower anterior facial height (ANS to Me), whereas the overjet and overbite were significantly reduced. Treatment with Fränkel appliance showed significant improvement in the relationship of maxilla and mandible. In addition, if the functional appliance was used during the period of pubertal growth peak, there was a significant increase in mandibular length, improvement in the relationship of maxilla and mandible, labial inclination of lower incisors and decrease in overjet compared to the treatment before pubertal growth peak. Therefore, this study indicates that using functional appliances for patients with class II malocclusion is effective and the optimal timing for using functional appliances is during pubertal growth peak.

This study aimed to evaluate the nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal dimensions of the patients with skeletal class II division 1 or division 2 patterns during the pre-peak, peak, and post-peak growth periods for comparison with a skeletal class I control group (79 for pre-peak, 40 for peak, 40 for post-peak). Total 159 lateral cephalograms (70 for skeletal class I, 51 for skeletal class II, division 1, and 38 for skeletal class II, division 2) were selected. The growth of anteroposterior dimension of the pharyngeal airway were statistically significant among growth periods. The dimension for the nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal airway space was the smallest in the division 1 skeletal class II group followed by class II division 2 and skeletal class I.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the soft tissue changes of class II adolescents and adults in respect to extraction or nonextraction. The study included 68 patients from Wonkwang Dental Hospital were categorized to adolescent extraction group, adolescent nonextraction group, adult extraction group, adult nonextraction group. Cephalometric tracing of each patient was done to compare pretreatment and posttreatment of each group, to compare the changes between groups. And among the variables that showed significancy, correlation analysis and simple linear regression were done. The results were as follows. 1. In both adolescents and adults after extraction treatment, nasolabial angle significantly increased and in both subjects after non extraction treatment, nasolabial angle significantly decreased. 2. In extraction subjects, there were positive correlation between the amount of treatment changes of vertical-U1 and E line-upper lip, the changes of vertical-L1 and E line-lower lip, the changes of vertical-L1 and vertical-Li. 3. In extraction subjects, simple regression equations of E line-upper lip, E line-lower lip, Li were calculated by regression analysis. According to the results above, it could be considered that the effect of the extraction or nonextraction treatment was greater than the effect of growth.

The lack of characteristical understanding of the Home Economics Education will have difficulty in achieving the goal of the Home Economics Education. To allow the Home Economics Education class in school contribute toward the enhancement of the quality of life, it is inevitable to reinforce the recognition of the importance and necessity of the Home Economics Education and to newly propose a directional guidance forward the coming 21st century. The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for planners of the future Home Economics Education by surveying research administrators in charge of programming the overall school curriculum. This study was conducted under the following procedure to have the outcome as follows ; 1. Answers from respondents of age over 50 or careers over 16 years tended to grasp the goal of Home Economics Education in relation to the enhancement of quality of life rather than to the accumulation of knowledge, skill or capacity. 2. Of all the surveyed, 9.64% regarded Home Economics Education as an essential part of school education and the positive ratio was higher with younger respondents. 3. To the question asking if the high school Home Economics Education could have influence on one's capacity, 97.2% of the answerers said yes. The respondents with career under 15 year showed 100% of positive agreement in this matter and of age under 40 marked much higher ratio of 98.84% than the elders. 4. The overall recognition of the necessity for separate sections in Home Economics Education programmed in accordance with the 6th Revision of High School Curriculum displayed a considerably high ratio, with a little differences among age and job groups. The purpose of this study is to analyze and understand adolescents'culture, thereby to provide fundamental information for Preventive Education for Adolescents'Problems in Home Economic Education. 745 articles collected in computer communication service were used for the analysis. The data were analyzed by frequency and percentage using the SPSS/PC+computer program. The most important results of this study were as follows ; 1) Concerning 'Adolescent's Problems's, problems such as violence, homicide and robbery were treated with the greatest frequency. It was also analyzed that the older generations are highly inclined to understand adolescents'culture as a negative one, for example, 'delinquency'or 'immaturity'. 2) Although the area of 'Adolescents'Education'was treated most frequently reflecting the high educational concern in our society, the significant part of those articles were on wrongful educational administration. As much as 70.6% of the articles analyzed were on 'Education'and 'Problems'. Thereby it may be concluded that the other areas such as health, activities, worries, values and harmful environments ere treated respectively as only a 'subculture'or'fragmentary culture'. The articles containing correlations and interactions among them and certain alternative proposals were very rare. 3) The areas such as 'Worries and Counselling'and 'Health'were occupying only a small portion of the articles. The articles which were treating the practical worries and their resolutions were even rarer. 4) 'Values'of the adolescents tended to be viewed by the older generations very negatively. It was also found that the older generations gave the tendency to see the 'consumption culture'of the adolescents as a kind of 'counter culture'or'subculture'.

The number of reported traumatic injuries has been increasing in recent years, particularly that of dental trauma in children and adolescents. While the risks associated with dental trauma in this population have been increasingly realized, domestic reports on this issue seem to be insufficient. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental trauma and to evaluate the relevant risk factors and the level of self-recognition. 1,371 adolescents attending middle schools at Yangsan were surveyed via clinical examination and questionnaire; the results were as follows: According to the clinical examination, the overall prevalence of dental trauma was 16.8% with preponderance of males (19.2%) compared to females (13.7%) (p < 0.05). The average number of injured teeth per adolescent with a history of trauma was 1.34. Comparing the prevalence, maxillary central incisors and enamel fracture occupied the highest ranks by tooth type and mode of trauma, respectively. Class II division 1 malocclusion and overjet exceeding 8.0 mm were identified as significant risk factors (p < 0.05). The degree of self-recognition of dental trauma showed a low coincidence rate compared with results of the clinical examination. Males expressed a higher level of satisfaction toward the results of treatment for dental trauma than females (p < 0.05).

The purpose of this retrospective study was to estimate the pretreatment characteristics of growing patients with Class II malocclusion. who had been treated with maxillary second molar extractions The sample comprised of 51 subjects; 18 subjects were classified into the molar extraction group, and 33 subjects were treated without extraction and classified into the nonextraction group. Pretreatment lateral cephalograms were calculated and analyzed by independent t-test and stepwise discriminant analysis. In measurements for skeletal pattern, no anteroposterior measurements and proportions of various vertical dimensions were significantly different. and only some measurements such as $AB-MP(^{\circ)$, Na-We(mm), AVD (mm) were significantly different between the two treatment groups (p<0.05). In measurements for dentoalveolar pattern. some measurements, which were related to the position and angulation of the upper and lower permanent first molars, and the angulation of the upper third molars, were significantly different between the two treatment groups In particular, the maxillary second molar extraction group exhibited more mesial angulation of maxillary first molar to the occlusal plane.
