Buckling Strength of Wooden Column with Entasis at the Muryangsugeon in Buseoksa-Temple (부석사 무량수전 배흘림 목재 기둥의 좌굴강도)

  • In this paper we present the result of investigations pertaining to the buckling strength of Zelkova Serrata (Elm-like) tree column with entasis at the Muryangsujeon in Buseoksa-Temple, Korea. Wooden columns with entasis had been used in the construction of ancient architectural buildings in Korea. It was not known why did they design columns with entasis of the buildings. It is just presumed that the reason may be the compensation of optical illusion, aesthetics, and/or structural safety. The question is not answered even today and it may not be possible to answer clearly and easily. In the paper, the buckling analyses are conducted on both of the wooden column with entasis and the prismatic wooden column by the successive approximations technique and the finite element methods, respectively. The results of analyses are compared and discussed.

Buckling Load of Columns with Same Volume and Length but Variable Cross-section along the Length (부피와 길이가 같은 변단면 기둥의 좌굴하중)

  • In this paper, we present the result of investigations pertaining to the elastic buckling of simply supported columns with various cross-sectional dimensions but the same length and volume. In the investigations the accuracy of the analysis methods is studied and it was found that the result obtained by the successive approximations technique is the most accurate. In addition, the elastic buckling loads of columns with variable cross-section dimensions are obtained by the theoretical and numerical methods. From the results, it was found that the buckling loads obtained by the numerical methods are close to the buckling loads obtained by the successive approximations technique for the practical standpoints. Moreover, the buckling load of column with convexity in its middle is the highest while the buckling load of the tapered column is the lowest as expected.

  • Solid waste production increases due to population and consumption increments. Landfill is the ultimate destination for all kinds of municipal solid waste; and is the most convenient waste disposal method in developing countries. To minimize investment and operational costs and society's opposition towards locating landfills nearby, proper landfill sizing and siting are essential. In this study, solid waste forecasting using Autoregressive Integrating Moving Average (ARIMA) was integrated with government future plans and waste composition to estimate the required landfill area for the state of Selangor, Malaysia. Landfill siting criteria were then prioritized based on expert's preferences. To minimize ambiguity and the uncertainty of the criteria prioritizing process, the expert's preferences were treated using integrated Median Ranked Sample Set (MRSS) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) models. The results show that the required landfill area is 342 hectares and the environmental criteria are the most important; with a priority equal to 48%.

Structural Characteristics of Steel-Concrete Composite Plate Girder with Arch-Type Web Stiffener (아치형 복부판 보강재가 설치된 플레이트거더 강합성교의 구조적 거동특성)

  • In this paper, we present the result of analytical investigation pertaining to the structural behavior of steel-concrete composite plate girder with arch-type web stiffener. In the arch-type web stiffener located in the compression side of web, infill concrete is cast to strengthen the arch-type stiffener and also to exert resisting force against compression force. This type of composite steel-concrete plate girder bridge is built and is in service. To understand the behavior thoroughly, analytical parametric study was conducted by using the finite element method. As a result it was found that the effect of arch-type stiffener with infill concrete is considerable for the design of such type composite girder bridge.

A Study on the System Engineering Application to KC-100 Aircraft Development (민간항공기개발 시스템엔지니어링 적용 연구)

  • KC-100(KAI Civil Aircraft, Small Series) aircraft is 4 seats general aviation aircraft with single piston engine which is developing under FAA part 23 category by Korea Aerospace Industries(KAI) and will be a shadow program for civil aircraft safety infrastructure improvement. This aircraft will be the first civil aircraft developed in Korea meeting the Korean regulatory KAS Part 23 requirements. Type certification for KC-100 aircraft was applied at the second half of this year. The type certificate is expected to be issued after 3 years of design, prototype manufacturing, ground and flight tests. In this paper the system engineering process for civil aircraft was first reviewed. Next, the differences and similarities in the system development between military and civil aircraft were systematically examined using experiences for KAI military aircraft development program.
