Controlling the size distribution of gold nanoparticles (NPs) is of great importance due to the fact that their properties are strongly dependent upon the size distribution as well as the size itself. In the citrate reduction method for gold NP synthesis, the citrate works as (1) a reducing agent, (2) a surfactant, and also (3) a weak base: it raises the pH of the whole reaction mixture. Here, we have extensively studied the all three roles of the citrate, by adding other reagents separately (NaBH4, CTAB, and NaOH) for the independent control of the three roles of the citrate. Among the roles of the citrate, that as a weak base was found to be the most critical parameter affecting the size distribution of gold NPs and the size distribution became much more improved with the increase of the solution pH, while adding a supplementary surfactant or reducing agent resulted in the formation of less homogeneous NPs.
Deliveries of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide in mainstream smoke decreased with increment of exogenous potassium content of tobacco. Potassium malate was more effective than potassium nitrate, potassium carbonate, potassium citrate and potassium oxalate for the reduction of carbon monoxide, but potassium nitrate was more effective than potassium palate, potassium carbonat, potassium citrate and potassium oxalate for the reduction of carbon in the case of nicotine. Puff count and burning rate were slightly changed with added potassium salts.
We prepared gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) by reduction-oxidation reaction between $HAuCl_4$ and trisodium citrate and measured the size and morphology of Au NPs by TEM for various molar ratios of $HAuCl_4$ to citrate and for various concentrations of $HAuCl_4$. UV-vis spectroscopy was used to characterize the optical properties of Au NPs. Au NPs in the size range from 14.3 nm to 20.3 nm were prepared with monodisperse distribution.
In the environment, chromium often exists in a highly mobile and toxic form of Cr(VI). Therefore, the reduction of Cr(VI) to less toxic Cr(III) is considered an effective remediation strategy for Cr(VI)-contamination. In this study, the biological reduction of hexavalent chromium was examined at the concentrations of 0.01 mM, 0.1 mM, and 1 mM Cr(VI) by the dissimilatory metal-reducing bacterium, Shewanella sp. HN-41 in the presence of ferric-citrate. With the relatively condensed cell densities, the aqueous phase Cr(VI) was reduced at the proportions of 42%, 23%, and 31%, respectively for the 0.01 mM, 0.1 mM, and 1 mM Cr(VI) incubations, while Fe(III)-citrate was reduced at 95%, 88%, and 73%, respectively. Although the strain HN-41 was not considered to reduce Cr(VI) as the sole electron acceptor for anaerobic metabolism in the preliminary experiment, it has been presumed that outer-membrane c-type cytochromes such as MtrC and OmcA reduced Cr(VI) in the presence of ferric-citrate as the electron acceptor. Since this study indicated the potential of relatively high cell density for Cr(VI) reduction, it might propose a bioremediation strategy for Cr(VI) removal from contaminated waters using engineered systems such as bioreactors employing high cell growths.
In order to isolate a Fe(III)-reducer from the natural environment, soil samples were collected from various patty fields and enriched with ferric citrate as a source of Fe(III) under anaerobic condition. Since the enrichment culture was serially performed, the Fe(III)-reduction activity was serially diluted and cultivated on an agar plate containing lactate and ferric citrate in an anaerobic glove box. A Gram negative, motile, rod-shaped and facultative anaerobic Fe(III)-reducer was isolated based on its highest Fe(III)-reduction activity, Bacterial growth was coupled with oxidation of lactate to Fe(III)-reduction, but the isolate fermented pyruvate without Fe(III), The isolate reduced an insoluble ferric iron (FeOOH) as well as a soluble ferric iron (ferric citrate). Using the BBL crystal enteric/non-fermentor identification kit and 16S rDNA sequence analysis, the isolate was identified as Shewanella putrefaciens IR-1.
The objective of this study was to assess the teratogenic and embryotoxic effects of clomiphene citrate in mice. The pregnant mice were administered a single dose of clomiphene citrate at different concentrations i.e 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 ${\mu}g/g$ BW on day 8 of gestation. Fetuses recovered on day 18 of gestation were analyzed on morphological, morphometric and histological basis. Morphological observations showed defects like open eyelids, anophthalmia, fore and hindlimb micromelia, meromelia, amelia, sacral hygroma, hydrocephaly, hemorrhagic spots, kyphosis and clubbed feet. Morphometric analysis indicated a significant (p<0.001) reduction in fetal body weight, crown rump length, head circumference, eye circumference, forelimb and hindlimb lengths and tail size against controls. The histological observations showed brain defects like hydrocephaly, enlarged ventricles and undifferentiated neuroglial cells in cerebellum. Cleft palate, underdeveloped pharynx and atrophy of jaw muscles were the common anatomical defects of pharyngeal region. It is concluded that the concentrations of clomiphene citrate used during the present study proved teratogenic in mice fetuses.
Perovskite-type mixed oxides LaBO$_3$(B = Mn, Fe, Co) were prepared by citrate sol-gel method in $air(850^{\circ}C$, 24h). The oxygen stoichiometries and structures of these oxides were determined by XRD and TPR results as followings; LaMnO$_{3.16}$(a = 5.507, c = 13.329 $\AA$, hexagonal), LaFeO$_{3.17}$(a = 5.554, b = 5.555, c = 7.863 $\AA$, orthorhomibic), LaCoO$_{3.0}$(a = 5.436, c = 13.095 $\AA$, hexagonal). The temperature programmed reduction(TPR) experiments in static 300 torr H$_2$ atmosphere shows that the reduction reaction of LaBO$_3$(B = Mn, Fe, Co) proceeds into two stages, and thermal stabilities of these oxides decreased in the order of LaMnO$_3$ > LaFeO$_3$ > LaCoO$_3$. According to the kinetic analysis the lowest activation energy was obtained for LaCoO$_3$.

Citrate ion is a commonly used reductant in metal colloid synthesis, undergoes strong surface interaction with silver nanocrystallites. The slow crystal growth observed as a result of the interaction between the silver surface and the citrate ion makes this reduction process unique compared to other chemical and radiolytic synthetic methods. The antimicrobial effects of silver (Ag) ion or salts are well known, but the effects of citrate coated Ag nanoparticles (CAgNPs) are scant. Herein, we have isolated biofilm causative bacteria and fungi from drinking water PVC pipe lines. Stable CAgNPs were prepared and the formation of CAgNPs was confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopic analysis and recorded the localized surface plasmon resonance of CAgNPs at 430 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis revealed C=O and O-H bending vibrations due to organic capping of silver responsible for the reduction and stabilization of the CAgNPs. X-ray diffraction micrograph indicated the face centered cubic structure of the formed CAgNPs, and morphological studies including size (average size 50 nm) were carried out using transmission electron microscopy. The hydrodynamic diameter (60.7 nm) and zeta potential (-27.6 mV) were measured using the dynamic light scattering technique. The antimicrobial activity of CAgNPs was evaluated (in vitro) against the isolated fungi, Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria using disc diffusion method and results revealed that CAgNPs with 170ppm concentration are having significant antimicrobial effects against an array of microbes tested.

Development of new burning additives against nitrate salts used in past tobacco industry examined to reduce harmful nitrogenous compounds in smoke. Among several additives treated, the best effect by means of elevation of combustibility and reduction of tar and nicotin contents in smoke was observed by adding sodium citrate from 0.6 to 1% in tabacco. The following results were obtained through investigating combustibility, chemical composition, and differential thermal analysis of the tabacco treated with the buring additives. 1) The close relation was observed between the levels of the smoke components and combustibility of the treated tabacco. 2) Differential thermal analysis (D.T.A.) of citrate-treated tobacco shows an increase in H. Value and a decrease in L. Value as compared with other tobacco sample. 3) The D.T.A. of sodium-nitrate and sodium-citrate shows that sodium-nitrate gives endothermal reaction at $270^{\circ}$ and $310^{\circ}$ and sodium citrate gives exothermal reaction at $290^{\circ}$ with endothermal reaction at $170^{\circ}\;and\;310^{\circ}$. 4) $Na_3-citrate-treated$ tobacco shows an increase in smoke generation between room temperature and $350^{\circ}$ (Zone A) and a decrease in smoke generation between $350^{\circ}$ and $900^{\circ}$ (Zone B) compared with untreated tobacco. The smoke from these tobacco also contains lower levels of Tar, Nicotine, Phenols, Nitrogen oxides and Benzpyrene, and elevation of static Burning rate.
The antimicrobial effects of a commercially available, buffered sodium citrate (BSC) were evaluated for the reduction of total aerobic bacteria count, Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus in a liquid medium and ground beef. BSC at 0, 1, 2 and 4.8% (wt/vol) or 0, 3, and 4.8% (wt/wt) was mixed into inoculated brain heart infusion (BHI) broth and ground beef (80% lean), respectively. BSC at concentrations of 1 and 2% did not inhibit growth of the pathogens tested in BHI broth. E. coli O157:H7 in BHI broth with 4.8% BSC was significantly reduced (p<0.05) by 3~4 log CFU/mL compared with the control for up to 4 days. At 4.8%, BSC treatment of ground beef most significantly reduced (p<0.05) total aerobic count and E. coli O157:H7 by 2.1 and 2.0 log CFU/g, respectively. This study indicates that the legally allowable level of 1.3% (wt/wt) BSC is not effective for reducing the pathogens tested in ground beef stored at $7^{\circ}C$.
