  • Fly ash from a circulating fluidized bed combustion boiler (CFBC fly ash) is very different in mineralogical composition, chemical composition, and morphology from coal ash from traditional pulverized fuel firing because of many differences in their combustion processes. The main minerals of CFBC fly ash are lime and anhydrous gypsum; however, due to the fuel type, the strength development of CFBC fly ash is affected by minor components of active $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$. The initial hydration product of the circulating fluidized bed combustion fly ash (B CFBC ash) using petro coke as a fuel is Portlandite which becomes gypsum after 7 days. Due to the structural features of the portlandite and gypsum, the self-cementitious strength of B CFBC ash was low. While the hydration products of the circulating fluidized bed combustion fly ash (A CFBC ash) using bituminous coal as a fuel were initially portlandite and ettringite, after 7 days the hydration products were gypsum and C-S-H. Due to the structural features of ettringite and C-S-H, A CFBC ash showed a certain degree of self-cementitious strength.

  • Circulating Fluidized-Bed (CFB) boilers which have been operated in Korea were manufactured by the design technology of foreign leading companies. As they are not active to transfer their technology, domestic companies don't have the enough ability to design it independently yet. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd. and Korean Institute of Energy Research are trying to develop and improve the particle re-circulating device among the components of CFB boiler. Our purpose is to control the amount of particles leaving the re-circulating system by adjusting utility air and reuse the heat of circulating particles. The results of experiments with cold model system show that a fluidization state in the particle re-circulating device is very stable when the amount of utility air is supplied to its wind box with 2.29 times of minimum fluidization velocity. Also the amount of particles entering the riser don't increase linearly when the amount of utility air is supplied over 2.5 times of minimum fluidization velocity. Now we are testing its functional run with the hotstate experiment set-up.

  • Pot-holes are steadily increasing due to abnormal climate such as heavy rainfall and frequent snowfall. Pot-hole related to traffic accidents cause injuries, car damage and distress of road facilities. To reduce pot-holes, the use of an anti-stripping agent is mandatorily recommended to asphalt concrete mixture. Hydrated lime is commonly used as anti-stripping agent due to the convenience and economics. Byproduct ash from circulating fluidized bed boiler was reviewed as an anti stripping agent. According to the test results, the byproduct ash is satisfied with TSR specification using 1% to 3% by weight of the asphalt mixture. The byproduct ash was examined under various condition changes of aggregate and asphalt concrete mixture considering quality movement. According to the results, using the byproduct ash was measured average 0.87 of TSR and coverage rates of 60% after rolling bottle test. Test results also revealed that the byproduct ash showed stable performance. Using the byproduct ash to decrease pot-hole in asphalt concrete pavement is suitable for demonstrating stable performance as anti-stripping agent.

  • In the present paper, the phenomena of abnormal noise and vibration due to acoustic resonance of CFBC(Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion) boiler was presented. The acoustic resonance which occurred in the gas path of CFBC boiler system was caused by coincidence of vortex shedding frequency of tube bank and acoustic natural frequency of duct and hopper. And, the phenomena of beating arose from the interference of two closed resonant waves at 66.4Hz and 70.8Hz. There are two control methods for acoustic resonance in this system. The first method is to change the vortex shedding frequency from the structural alterations on the tube bank. And the second method is to change the acoustic natural frequency of the gas path with the installation of anti-noise baffles. The second one which is relatively easy to apply, was adapted in this study. As a result, the noise and vibration level have been decreased by 41dB and 94% at 66.4Hz, respectively. And the improvement of noise and vibration at 70.8Hz was identified by sensory evaluation.

  • The combustion characteristics of anthracite, which follow a complex process with low reactivity, must be considered through the dynamic behavior of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed to analyze the combustion characteristics of anthracite in a pilot scale 0.1 MWth Oxy-fuel circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFB) boiler. The 0.1MWth Oxy-CFB boiler is composed of combustor (0.15 m l.D., 10 m High), cyclone, return leg, and so on. To perform CFD analysis, a 3D simulation model reactor was designed and used. The anthracite used in the experiment has an average particle size of 1,070 ㎛ and a density of 2,326 kg/m3. The flow pattern of gas-solids inside the reactor according to the change of combustion environment from air combustion to oxygen combustion was investigated. At this time, it was found that the temperature distribution in air combustion and oxygen combustion showed a similar pattern, but the pressure distribution was lower in oxygen combustion. addition, since it has a higher CO2 concentration in oxygen combustion than in air combustion, it can be expected that carbon dioxide capture will take place actively. As a result, it was confirmed that this study can contribute to the optimized design and operation of a circulating fluidized bed reactor using anthracite.

  • Heat recovery from boiler exhaust gas with multi-stage water-fluidized-bed heat exchanger is analyzed in this study. The recovered energy here is not only sensible heat but also latent heat contained in the exhaust gas. In this system direct contact heat transfer occurs while exhaust gas passes through water bed and the thermal energy recovered this way is again delivered to the water circulating through heat exchanging pipes within the bed. Thus the thermal energy of exhaust gas can be recovered as a clean hot water. A computer program developed in this study can predict the heat transfer performance of the system. The results of experiments performed in this study agree well with the calculated ones. The heat and mass transfer coefficients can be fecund through these experiments. The performance increases as the number of stage increases. However at large number of stages the increasing rate becomes very low.
