  • To develop the code of predicting flow-field and aeroacoustic noise by a electrical cable, a combined CFD-acoustic analogy approach is selected. The two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver with a ${\kappa}{\omega}$, ${\kappa}{\omega}$ SST turbulence modeling is used to calculate the near-field around electrical cable. Near-field results are then coupled with two-dimensional Curle's integral formulation based upon Lighthill's acoustic analogy with an assumption of acoustic compactness. To validate this code, numerical results are compared with experimental data for a circular cylinder. The simulation shows an overprediction on acoustic amplitudes, but overally speaking, the spectrum pattern of sound pressure agrees well with experiment in an acceptable amount of error. In addition, various cross sections of a cable were selected and compared with each other in terms of drag and radiated noise.

  • CRAMP, a 37-amino acid cationic antimicrobial peptide was recently deduced from the cDNA cloned from mouse femoral marrow RNA. In order to investigate the structure-activity relationship and functional region of CRAMP, CRAMP and its 18-mer overlapping peptides were synthesized by the solid phase method. CRAMP showed broad spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains (MIC: 3.125-6.25 μM) but had no hemolytic activity until 50 μM. CRAMP was found to have a potent anticancer activity (IC50: 12-23 μM) against two human small cell lung cancer cell lines. Furthermore, CRAMP was found to display faster bactericidal rate in B. subtilis rather than E. coli in the kinetics of bacterial killing. Among 18-meric overlapping fragment peptides, only CRAMP (16-33) displayed potent antibacterial activity (MIC: 12.5-50 μM) against several bacteria with no hemolytic activity. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra anal-ysis indicated that CRAMP and its analogues will form the amphipathic α-helical conformation in the cell membranes similar to other antimicrobial peptides, such as cecropins and magainins.

  • In this paper, attaching various damping plates to the cylindrical structure and performing numerical simulations try to study heave RAO and natural period for cylinder. Most of all, we identified heave RAO of the cylinder by simulations of the motion and the wave. And then, we performed numerical simulations by changing the size and shape of heave damping plate attached to the cylinder and reviewed the heave RAO and natural period for each case. The conclusions of this research are as follows. Firstly, the natural period of cylindrical structure is increased by attached to the cylinder with heave damping plate and the heave RAO of cylindrical structure is reduced in the peak period for incident wave by attached to the cylinder with from the size of 1.30D for heave damping plate. Secondly, circular plate has long natural period than Y-type plate in all of these sections. Finally, the motion response spectrum considering the marine environment of Piranema field was identified as the heave motion of cylindrical structure is remarkably reduced with both circular plate and Y-type plate in the peak period for incident wave.

  • This experimental study investigated the wake flow around an elastically supported circular cylinder. In this study, the Reynolds numbers are varied in the region of $1.4{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}3.2{\times}10^4$. Under these conditions, we have captured the process of the wake mechanism and the moving path of the vortex by measuring the velocity at each position in the wake around the cylinder. Further, these facts from the wind tunnel test are proved by a flow visualization test through a water channel. From the result, we have arrived at the following conclusions : i) The process (formation${\rightarrow}$growth${\rightarrow}$collapse) of vortex is observed in the wake around the cylinder, ii) The vortex efflux angle is approximately $16^{\circ}{\sim}17^{\circ}$ under the experimental conditions. These angles have no relationship with the velocity change and the existence of flow-induced vibrations of the cylinder, and iii) The moving path of the vortex center is obtained by spectrum analysis of the fluctuating velocity behind the cylinder. These are confirmed by conducting visualization tests.

  • We have fabricated and evaluated a new Si pin photodiode for red light detection with the web patterned $p^{+}$ -shallow diffused region in the light absorbing area. From the measurements of electro-optical characteristics under the bias of -5V, the junction capacitance of 4pF and the dark current of 235pA were obtained. When the 1.6㎼ optical power with peak wavelength of 670nm was incident on the device, the optical signal current of 0.48$\mu\textrm{A}$ and the responsivity of 0.30A/W were obtained. The fabricated device showed the improved sensitivity compared to the conventional circular type device and the maximum spectral response in a spectrum of 670~700nm. The web-patterned Si photodiode can be expected to have the good discrimination characteristics between digital signals in the application of red light optics.

  • Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) was investigated aiming at the identification of falsified drugs. The identification is based on comparison of the NIR spectrum of a sample with a typical spectra of an authentic drug using multivariate modelling and classification algorithms (PCA/SIMCA). Two spectrophotometers (Brimrose - Luminar 2000 and 2030), based on acoustic-optical filter (AOTF) technology, sharing the same controlling computer, software (Brimrose - Snap 2.03) and the data acquisition electronics, were employed. The Luminar 2000 scans the range 850 1800 nm and was employed for transmitance/absorbance measurements of liquids with a transflectance optical bundle probe with total optical path of 5 mm and a circular area of 0.5 $\textrm{cm}^2$. Model 2030 scans the rage 1100 2400 nm and was employed for reflectance measurement of solids drugs. 300 spectra, acquired in about 20 s, were averaged for each sample. Chemometric treatment of the spectral data, modelling and classification were performed by using the Unscrambler 7.5 software (CAMO Norway). This package provides the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and SIMCA algorithms, used for modelling and classification, respectively. Initially, NIRS was evaluated for spectrum acquisition of various drugs, selected in order to accomplish the diversity of physico-chemical characteristics found among commercial products. Parameters which could affect the spectra of a given drug (especially if presented as solid tablets) were investigated and the results showed that the first derivative can minimize spectral changes associated with tablet geometry, physical differences in their faces and position in relation to the probe beam. The effect of ambient humidity and temperature were also investigated. The first factor needs to be controlled for model construction because the ambient humidity can cause spectral alterations that should cause the wrong classification of a real drug if the factor is not considered by the model.

  • The present paper describes an approximation for estimation of earthquake-induced hydrodynamic loads in rigid storage tank which accelerated in horizontal direction. The storage tank is vertically cylindrical, and the sectional shape may be circular, rectangular or irregular. The solution for harmonic excitation is studied based on velocity potential theory, and then the time domain solution for earthquake is obtained by using design response spectrum. As a result, earthquake load is influenced primarily by the inertia force of high frequency effective mass of the storage tank, responding to the characteristics of design response spectrum, tank sectional shape, and the ratio of tank base length to depth. Earthquake-induced hydrodynamic loads in rigid storage tank can be effectively obtained by using the high frequency approximation method in case of quite large, or small ratio of the tank base length to water depth.

  • This paper presents the method to extract the ultrawide-band (UWB) signal and proposes the simple impulse radar system for sensing real-based target within close-range area. The proposed impulse radar system consists of impulse generator, ultrawide-band antennas, function generator, and digital oscilloscope. It is verified by experiment that a differentiated Gaussian pulse is generated with 200ps of pulse width and corresponding spectrum from 0.3 to 4.7 GHz once a sinusoidal wave with 10MHz is excited. The Gaussian doublet is received by identical antennas and it is shown that the UWB pule width of 328ps and its spectrum is from 0.9 to 4.4 GHz. It is confirmed that the UWB pulse is extracted when the real-based targets such as circular target with 4cm radius and corner reflector are placed at the close-range area.

  • We report a spatial fluctuation analysis of the sky brightness in the near-infrared from observations towards the north ecliptic pole (NEP) by AKARI at 2.4 and $3.2{\mu}m$. As a follow up study of our previous work on the Monitor field of AKARI, we used NEP deep survey data, which covered a circular area of about 0.4 square degrees, in order to extend fluctuation analysis at angular scales up to 1000". After pre-processing, additional correction procedures were done to correct time varying components and instrumental effects such as MUXbleed. To remove resolved objects, we applied $2{\sigma}$ clipping and point spread function (PSF) subtraction. We finally obtained mosaicked images which can be used for the study of various diffuse emissions in the near-infrared sky and found that there are spatial structures in the mosaicked images using a power spectrum analysis.

  • The native conformation of serpins (serine protease inhibitors) is strained. Upon cleavage of the reactive center loop of serpins by a protease, the amino terminal portion of the cleaved loop is inserted into the central ${\beta}-sheet$, A sheet, as the fourth strand, with the concomitant release of the native strain. We questioned the role of protease in this conformational switch from the strained native form into a stable relaxed state. Chemical cleavage of the reactive center loop of ${\alpha}_1-antitrypsin$, a prototype serpin, using hydroxylamine dramatically increased the stability of the serpin. A circular dichroism spectrum and peptide binding study suggests that the amino terminal portion of the reactive center loop is inserted into the A sheet in the chemically-cleaved ${\alpha}_1-antitrypsin$, as in the enzymatically-cleaved molecule. These results indicate that the structural transformation of a serpin molecule does not require interaction with a protease. The results suggest that the serpin conformational switch that occurred during the complex formation with a target protease is induced by the cleavage of the reactive center loop per se.
