The bridge columns with lap-splice reinforcements in earthquake suffered a brittle bond-slip failure due to the deterioration of lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP wrapping. The retrofitted columns using FRP laminated circular tube showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the circumferential confinement effect of existing circular bridge pier strengthened with FRP wrapping for poor lap-splice details. The effects on the confinement of FRP wrapping, such as gap lengths between footing and FRP, fiber orientations, and thicknesses of FRP, were investigated by Quasi-static experiments.

Finite element analyses were performed to find out the load bearing behavior of three kinds of shallow foundations. The analysis results for strip footing showed that local shear failure mode could be observed for a zero dilatancy angle and general shear failure mode could be seen for non-zero dilatancy angles. The ultimate bearing loads for non-zero dilatancy angles were approximately 1.5 times higher than that of a zero dilatancy angle. General shear failure mode was observed for circular footing and square footing regardless of the dilatancy angle. The ultimate bearing loads for a non-zero dilatancy angle were slightly greater than that for a zero dilatancy angle. A comparison of the load-settlement curves for three kinds of footing showed that the load bearing capacities for non-zero dilatancy angle were greater than those for a zero-dilatancy angle.

Bearing capacity factor $N_{\gamma}$ and shape factor were studied for rigid strip and circular footings with a rough base on sand by numerical modelling considering the effect of dilation angle. The numerical model was developed with an explicit finite difference code. Loading procedures and interpretation methods were devised in order to shorten the running time while eliminating the exaggeration of the reaction caused by the explicit scheme. Using the Mohr-Coulomb plasticity model with associated (${\psi}={\phi}$) and nonassociated (${\psi}$ < ${\phi}$) flow-rules, the bearing capacity factor $N_{\gamma}$ was evaluated for various combinations of internal friction angles and dilation angles. Bearing capacity factor decreased as the dilation angle was reduced from the associated condition. An equation applicable to typical sands was proposed to evaluate the relative bearing capacity for the nonassociated condition compared to the associated condition on which most bearing capacity factor equations are based. The shape factor for the circular footing varied substantially when the plane-strain effect was taken into account for the strip footing. The numerical results of this study showed closer trends with the previous experimental results when the internal friction angle was increased for the strip footing. Discussions are made on the reason that previous equations for the shape factor give different results and recommendations are made for the appropriate design shape factor.
In order to investigate the influence of slanting angle of reticulated root piles(RRP) on their bearing capacities, model tests of compressive and uplift loads on RRP with different slanting angles, which were installed in sandy soils with a relative density of 47%, were carried out. Each pile which is made of a steel bar of 5mm in diameter and 300mm in length, is coated with sand to be 6.5mm in diameter. One set of RRP consists of 8 piles which are installed in circular patterns forming two concentric circles, each of which has 4 piles. Slanting angles of RRP for load tests are 0$^{\circ}$, 5$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$, and 25$^{\circ}$. In addition, compressive load tests on circular footing whose diameter is the same as the outer circle of RRP were carried out. Test results show that maximum load bearing capacities of RRP by regression analysis are obtained at about 12$^{\circ}$ and 13$^{\circ}$ of slanting angles for compressive and uplift load tests, respectively. Maximum compressive bearing capacity is estimated to be 13oA bigger than that of the vertical RRP and 95% bigger than that of surface footing. Maximum uplift capacity is estimated to be 21% bigger than that of the vertical RRP. And it can be appreciated that increasing the slanting angle makes the load -Settlement behavior more ductile.

Lap splice in plastic hinge region of RC bridge piers is inevitable because of the constructional joint between footing and column. RC circular columns with lap-splice in plastic hinge region are widely used in Korean highway bridges. It is, however, believed that there we not many experimental research works for nonlinear behavior of these columns subjected to earthquake motions. This study has been peformed to verify the effect of lap splice and confinement steel ratio for the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Quasi-static test have been done to investigate the physical seismic performance of RC bridge piers, such as displacement ductility.

The foundations are classified into shallow and deep, which have important differences: in terms of geometry, the behavior of the soil, its structural functionality, and its constructive systems. The shallow foundations may be of various types according to their function; isolated footings, combined footings, strip footings, and slabs foundation. The isolated footings are of the type rectangular, square and circular. The combined footing may be rectangular, trapezoidal or T-shaped in plan. This paper presents a new model for T-shaped combined footings to obtain the most economical contact surface on the soil (optimal dimensioning) to support an axial load and moment in two directions to each column. The new model considers the soil real pressure, i.e., the pressure varies linearly. The classical model uses the technique of test and error, i.e., a dimension is proposed, and subsequently, the equation of the biaxial bending is used to obtain the stresses acting on each vertex of the T-shaped combined footing, which must meet the conditions following: The minimum stress should be equal or greater than zero, and maximum stress must be equal or less than the allowable capacity that can withstand the soil. To illustrate the validity of the new model, numerical examples are presented to obtain the minimum area of the contact surface on the soil for T-shaped combined footings subjected to an axial load and moments in two directions applied to each column.
Currently, layered geogrid method (LGM) is the commonly practiced technique for reinforcement of slopes. In this paper the geogrid-box method (GBM) is introduced as a new approach for reinforcement of rock-soil slopes. To achieve the objectives of this study, a laboratory setup was designed and the slopes without reinforcements and reinforced with LGM and GBM were tested under the loading of a circular footing. The effect of vertical spacing between geogrid layers and box thickness on normalized bearing capacity and failure mechanism of slopes was investigated. A series of 3D finite element analysis were also performed using ABAQUS software to supplement the results of the model tests. The results indicated that the load-settlement behavior and the ultimate bearing capacity of footing can be significantly improved by the inclusion of reinforcing geogrid in the soil. It was found that for the slopes reinforced with GBM, the displacement contours are widely distributed in the rock-soil mass underneath the footing in greater width and depth than that in the reinforced slope with LGM, which in turn results in higher bearing capacity. It was also established that by reducing the thickness of geogrid-boxes, the distribution and depth of displacement contours increases and a longer failure surface is developed, which suggests the enhanced bearing capacity of the slope. Based on the studied designs, the ultimate bearing capacity of the GBM-reinforced slope was found to be 11.16% higher than that of the slope reinforced with LGM. The results also indicated that, reinforcement of rock-soil slopes using GBM causes an improvement in the ultimate bearing capacity as high as 24.8 times more than that of the unreinforced slope.
This paper presents an investigation on bearing capacity, load-settlement behavior and safety factor of rock-soil slopes reinforced using geogrid-box method (GBM). To this end, small-scale laboratory studies were carried out to study the load-settlement response of a circular footing resting on unreinforced and reinforced rock-soil slopes. Several parameters including unit weight of rock-soil materials (loose- and dense-packing modes), slope height, location of footing relative to the slope crest, and geogrid tensile strength were studied. A series of finite element analysis were conducted using ABAQUS software to predict the bearing capacity behavior of slopes. Limit equilibrium and finite element analysis were also performed using commercially available software SLIDE and ABAQUS, respectively to calculate the safety factor. It was found that stabilization of rock-soil slopes using GBM significantly improves the bearing capacity and settlement behavior of slopes. It was established that, the displacement contours in the dense-packing mode distribute in a broader and deeper area as compared with the loose-packing mode, which results in higher ultimate bearing load. Moreover, it was found that in the loose-packing mode an increase in the vertical pressure load is accompanied with an increase in the soil settlement, while in the dense-packing mode the load-settlement curves show a pronounced peak. Comparison of bearing capacity ratios for the dense- and loose-packing modes demonstrated that the maximum benefit of GBM is achieved for rock-soil slopes in loose-packing mode. It was also found that by increasing the slope height, both the initial stiffness and the bearing load decreases. The results indicated a significant increase in the ultimate bearing load as the distance of the footing to the slope crest increases. For all the cases, a good agreement between the laboratory and numerical results was observed.
In this study, a random vibration technique to anaiyze the vertical vibration of rigid circular footings on sand whose material properties are not previously determind is proposed. Total of 11 circular model footings varing mass ratio and radius are constructed for the vibration experim eat and the elastic half space is represented by compacted sand layer From the random vibration experiments, it is found that the technique suggested in this study gives more accurate prediction of circular footing behavior under vertical vibration than the simplified analog which assumes the subsoils as elastic half space. The predicted resonant frequene iris agree very well with the measured values from the slnusoidal vibration experiments. The ratio of the predicted resonant amplitudes to the measured values vary between 0.5 and 1,35 for the site used for the vibration experiments in this study.
