  • Numerical study was made on the flow characteristics around a circular pipeline between parallel walls. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved by using a third-order upwind differential scheme. When the distance near a wall is small enough, the vortex shedding is almost completely suppressed because of the interaction with the wall boundary layer separation. This study aims to clarify the characteristics of the vortex shedding regime as the body approaches a wall as Reynolds number varies. The feature of separated vorticity dynamics is analyzed at different conditions with particular attention to the interaction between the pipeline wake and the induced separation on the plane walls.

  • This paper describes a remote measurement method for estimating unsteady flowrate through a pipeline. By this method, instantaneous flowrate at the remote location along a pipeline (distance L) from flowmeters is measured by making use of dynamic characteristics between two cross sections of the circular pipeline. Using this method, instantaneous flowrate is accurately measured at a location where it is difficult to setup flowmeters. The estimated flowrate waveforms by the method are compared with directly measured ones by cylindrical choke-type instantaneous flowmeter. The validity of the method is established.

  • This study developed an image processing system for detecting damages on underground spiral PVC pipes. The detection method is simple-identifying damaged areas by measuring circularity along the pipeline. This uses the assumption that damage parts will not make a circular shape. Conventional devices check the circular shape of the pipe along the pipeline by measuring the angles between 6 spring-connected legs on the device. The conventional device, however, requires the insertion of 3 different wires (electrical, communication, and camera lines) along with a guide wire for pulling the device. The developed system presented here has simplified this system, requiring only a camera line while maintaining reasonable accuracy in damage detection.

  • During thermal power coal-fired boiler operation, it is very important to detect the pulverized coal concentration in the air pipeline for the boiler combustion stability and economic security. Because the current measurement methods used by power plants are often involved with large measurement errors and unable to monitor the pulverized coal concentration in real-time, a new method is needed. In this paper, a new method based on microwave circular waveguide is presented. High Frequency Electromagnetic Simulation (HFSS) software was used to construct a simulation model for measuring pulverized coal concentration in power plant pipeline. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiments were done to find the effective microwave emission frequency, installation angle, the type of antenna probe, antenna installation distance and other important parameters. Finally, field experiment in Jilin Thermal Power Plant proved that with selected parameters, the measuring device accurately reflected the changes in the concentration of pulverized coal.

  • This paper describes performance evaluation of design parameters, air velocity inside a pipeline and pressure along a pipeline, using experimental measurements in an automated vacuum waste collection system. Automatic robot having six cameras is introduced to analyze the internal pipeline conditions whether waste accumulates at the bottom of the pipeline or not. Throughout the experimental measurements of the pipeline having the various shapes, it is found that pressure and internal air velocity linearly increase along the pipeline from a waste inlet to a waste collection station while air density decreases due to the air compression effect with high pressure. Although air velocity inside the pipeline at a waste inlet keeps design velocity range between 20 m/s and 30 m/s, it is noted that air velocity near the waste collection station exceeds maximum design velocity of 30 m/s. Pressure increase per unit length is changed from 17.6 Pa/m to 18.9 Pa/m, which depends on the air velocity inside the pipeline. From the investigation inside the pipeline with CCTV loaded on an automated robot, waste accumulated at the bottom of the pipeline is mainly found at the downstream of a circular curved pipe, an inclined pipe and a bended pipe.

  • Wave forces on fixed two-dimensional objects submerged in water of finite depth were analysed by Boundary Element Method using linear elements. It is assumed that the wave forces may be described by linear theory and that incident wave direction is normal to the objects of infinite length. In this paper, wave forces on a bottom-seated half cross section pipeline, a circular pipeline, a submerged pipeline and submerged breakwater of arbitrary shape were studied. The accuracy of the computational scheme is investigated by comparing the numerical results with the existing laboratory results and analytical solutions of other researchers.

  • In this paper, an oil hydraulic pipeline is terminated by both rotary sinusoidal flow generator at upstream oriffice at down stream. The pulsating pressure wave from generated by the rotary sinusoidal flow generator, is measured by using sensor. In the analysis of this paper, a component of the fundamental frequency is obtained by using Laplace transformation.. The experimental and analytical results make clear that (1) viscosity is significant role in hydraulic pipe. (2) When pulsating frequency is matched with the natural frequency, resonance frequency occured periodically. According to the study proposed here, dynamic pressure in a circular oil pipe is expressed in propagation of pressure wave with respect to frequency and Bessel function. The resonance at oil temperature $20^{\circ}$$0^{\circ}C$ in this study. The abrupt change of gain value is due to effect of resonance frequency. The results of experiment are compared with the calculated results, and agreement of both results is fairly good.

  • Due to the handheld holding of smartphones and the presence of light leakage and non-balanced contrast, the detection of the retina area in smartphone-captured fundus images is more challenging than retinography-captured fundus images. This paper presents a computationally efficient image processing pipeline in order to detect and enhance the retina area in smartphone-captured fundus images. The developed pipeline consists of five image processing components, namely point spread function parameter estimation, deconvolution, contrast balancing, circular Hough transform, and retina area extraction. The results obtained indicate a typical fundus image captured by a smartphone through a D-EYE lens is processed in 1 second.

  • There are advantages in the installation of dual subsea pipelines over two separate single lines. In many case it can reduce the cost for trench, back-filling and installation. However the installation of dual pipelines often requires technical challenges. Dual Pipelines should be placed to be stable to external loading not only during the installation but also in the design life. Dual pipelines in trench can reduce the influence of external forces. To investigate applied forces as slope changes, number of experiments are conducted with PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) in a circulating water channel. Numerical approaches are also made to compare with experimental results. The velocity fields around dual pipelines in trench are investigated and analysed. Comparison of both results show similar pattern of flow around dual pipelines. it is proved that the trench slope affects the pipeline stability significantly. The results can be applied in the stability design of dual pipelines in trench section. The complex flow patterns can be referenced effectively linked in the understanding of fluid around circular bodies in trench.

  • Non-linear anisotropic materials were used to simulate the effects of tensile stress in 3D finite element analysis (FEA). FEA was used to calculate the effects of far and near-side pit depth and tensile stress on magnetic flux leakage (MFL) signals. The axial and radial MFL signals were depended on far and near-side double circular pit depth and on the stress, but the circumferential MFL signal was not depended on them. The axial and radial MFL signals increased with greater pit depth and applied stress, but the circumferential MFL signal was scarcely changed.
