Objectives : To study the use of Cinnamomum cassia among the 394 prescriptions listed in Donguibogam Methods : After selecting a total of 394 prescriptions, 284 prescriptions with Cinnamon Cassia as the protagonist were analyzed and summarized in the table. In particular, the investigation was conducted by comparing the Cinnamomi Ramulus and Cinnamomi Cortex. Results : The Cinnamomum cassia is used in 52 fields of treatment such as common cold & flu diseases, abscess and stroke, etc. Prescriptions containing Cinnamomi Ramulus were most commonly used for cold disease. And prescriptions containing Cinnamomi Cortex were most commonly used for wind diseases. Prescriptions that utilize Cinnamomum cassia are used in the treatment of feeling of cold, numbness, low back pain, cough and so on. Prescriptions containing Cinnamomi Ramulus mainly treat cold disease. And prescriptions containing Cinnamomi Cortex treat mainly abdominal pain and diarrhea. 14 prescriptions of the same name are included with Cinnamomum cassia. The other unclassified Cinnamomum cassia is considered suitable for use with Cinnamomi Cortex. Cinnamomum cassia is only used as a raw material. Conclusions : According to the classification of Cinnamomum cassia, further study of prescription utilization is needed.
Plant extracts produced from branches of Crataegus pinnatifida and barks of Crataegus pinnatifida inhibited ethanol-induced cytotoxicity and DNA damage in liver cells. Furthermore, these two extracts inhibited the expression and activities of CYP2E1 enzyme. Cinnamomum cassia had a better effect on inhibition of DNA damage than Crataegus pinnatifida, as well as showed a high tendency to inhibit CYP2E1 expression and catalytic activities. It is considered that extracts produced from Crataegus pinnatifida or Cinnamomum cassia have an effect to reduce ethanol-induced cytotoxicity and DNA damage in liver cells. Therefore, we suggest to use Crataegus pinnatifida and Cinnamomum cassia and their ingredients as potential candidate substances to prevent and treat ethanol-induced cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in liver cells.
Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the antidiabetes effects of Cinnamomum cassia and Aconitum carmichaeli in type II diabetes mellitus model mice. Methods : The experimental animals were divided into 3 groups and treated for 50 days as follows:control group, pharmacopuncture group and extract administration group. The effects of Cinnamomum cassia and Aconitum carmichaeli were observed by measuring body weight, blood glucose, insulin, insulin immunoreactivity of the pancreas and subpopulation of splenocytes. Results : Cinnamomum cassia sample groups were reduced a little body weight than control group. Glucose level of extract administration group lowered than control and pharmacopuncture group. Insulin immunoreactivity of Aconitum carmichaeli extract group appeared more effective than control and pharmacopuncture group. Conclusions : This study shows that Cinnamomum cassia and Aconitum carmichaeli have a distinct antidiabetes effect in type II diabetes mellitus model.
Background & Objective: Articular cartilage is a potential target for drugs designed to inhibit the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) to stop or slow the destruction of the proteoglycanand collagen in the cartilage extracellular matrix. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Cinnamomum cassia in inhibiting the release of glycosaminoglycan (GAG), the degradation of collagen, and MMP activity in rabbit and human articular cartilage explants. Methods: The cartilage-protective effects of Cinnamomum cassia were evaluated by using glycosaminoglycan degradation assay, collagen degradation assay, colorimetric analysis of MMP activity, measurement of lactate dehydrogenase activity and histological analysis in rabbit cartilage explants culture. Results: Interleukin-1a (IL-1a) rapidly induced GAG, but collagen was much less readily released from cartilage explants. Cinnamomum cassia significantly inhibited GAG and collagen release in a concentration-dependent manner. Cinnamomum cassia dose-dependently inhibited MMP-1, MMP-3 and MMP-13 activities from IL-1a-treated cartilage explants culture when tested at concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 1 mg/ml. Conclusion : These results indicate that Cinnamomum cassia inhibits the degradation of proteoglycan and collagen through the down regulation of MMP-1, MMP-3 and MMP-13 activities of IL-1a-stimulated rabbit and human articular cartilage explants.
The hot water extract from cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia Presl) inhibited the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) with IC50 value of 45.6 ㎍/mL. The ADH inhibitory components in cinnamon extract were relatively stable to acid and heat, but were found to be volatile. The optimum temperature and time for extracting the ADH inhibitory components from cinnamon were 80 ℃ and 2 h, respectively. Among the essential oils of cinnamon, cinnamaldehyde was the main substance for ADH inhibition. Cinnamaldehyde is considered a competitive inhibitor of ethanol to ADH. Therefore, the cinnamon extract and cinnamaldehyde showed the potential to be used as natural materials for relieving symptoms of a hangover.
Chinese crude drug 'Gye Ji(桂枝)' is listed in Shen-nung-pen-tsao-ching(神農本草經), as the remedy for dispelling
pathogenic factor from the exterior of the body by diaphoresis. In Korean, herbals origin of Gye Ji is branch of Cinnamomum
cassia. Considering the descriptions in many herbals(本草書), the origin of Gye Ji reported by Su-Ching(蘇敬),
Han-Pao-Sheng(韓保昇) and Li -Shin-Chen(李時珍) is regarded as the bark of branch of Cinnamomum cassia.
Objective : In this study, we performed quantitative comparison on the content of 10 marker compounds in cinnamon barks from different species and found chemical discrimination between genuine Cinnamomum cassia and other Cinnamomum species (Non C. cassia). Methods : Cinnamon bark samples were extracted using the ultrasonication in 100% methanol for 30 minutes. The samples were analysed using high-performance liquid chromatography with statistical analysis. Results : The analytical method developed in this study met all validation criteria and was applied to the quantification of the 10 marker compounds in cinnamon bark samples. The major chemical discrimination of C. cassia were identified as low content of epicatechin and eugenol, and high contents of benzaldehyde, cinnamaldehyde and cinnamic acid compared to other Non C. cassia samples. Especially, among other compounds, the content of cinnamaldehyde was the highest in the C. cassia and Non C. cassia samples. The result of principal component analysis showed that the samples of C. cassia and Non C. cassia were clearly differentiated via benzaldehyde, cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, eugenol, and epicatechin, which influenced on clustering C. cassia and Non C. cassia samples. Conclusion : C. cassia and Non C. cassia samples were chemically discriminated using the quantitative HPLC analysis. Based on this, it is possible to control the quality of herbal medicines containing Cinnamomi Cortex. It is necessary to further improve the accuracy of discrimination between C. cassia and Non C. cassia species to evaluate cinnamon bark quality.

The cytotoxic activities of Cinnamomum cassia (Blume) bark-derived materials toward six human HeLa epithelioid cervix, A549 lung, SK-OV-3 ovarian, SK-MEL-2 melanoma, XF-498 central nerve system, and HCT-15 colon tumor cell lines were evaluated by using sulforhodamine B assay and compared to those of the anticancer agents, cisplatin and mitomycin C. The biologically active constituent of the Cinnamomum bark was characterized as transcinnamaldehyde by spectroscopic analysis. The cytotoxic activity of cinnamaldehyde against HeLa, SK-MEL-2, and HCT -15 cell lines was comparable to that of cisplatin and mitomycin C. The compound showed lower activity against A549, SK-OV-3, and XF-498 cell lines than the anticancer agents. Eugenol exhibited moderate activity against SK-OV3, XF-498, and HCT-15 tumor cells, and trans-cinnamic acid, cinnamyl alcohol, $\alpha-pinene,\;and\;\beta-pinene$ showed little or no activity against model tumor cells. Cinnamaldehyde was not mutagenic against four strains (TA 98, TA 100, TA 1535, and TA 1537) of Salmonella typhimurium (Castel and Chalm). These results indicate at least one pharmacological action of C. cassia.
The aim of present study was to investigate the possible influence and the related mechanism of Cinnamomum cassia derived-cinnamaldehyde on the inflammation or nociception. Cinnamomum cassia was referred to be treated for common cold or dyspepsia in the traditional medicine. However, there are no reports on the antinociceptive or anti-inflammatory properties of cinnamaldehyde, the primary ingredient of Cinnamomum cassia. We hypothesized that cinnamaldehyde would play a role in the modulation of inflammation or nociception evoked by carrageenan, acetic acid or heat. Male Institute of Cancer Research mice were used and the size of edema, frequency of writhing and latency of abnormal behaviors such as licking, flicking, shaking or jumping were measured and recorded. The present study was carried out to evaluate the antiinflammatory and antinociceptive effects of cinnamaldehyde. The administration of cinnamaldehyde (30 and 100 mg/kg) inhibited carrageenan-induced paw edema only at the final phase, suggesting the blockade of synthesis or release of prostaglandins. It also reduced the frequency of the acetic acid-induced writhing reflex in mice. In addition, the administration of cinnamaldehyde prolonged the latency for extraordinary reaction at the hot plate in mice. In conclusion, cinnamaldehyde has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and is a potential therapeutic for inflammation and nociception.
