  • Chemical heat pump system of 2-propanol/acetone/hydrogen is most suitable to the recovery of waste heat of power plant. various types of 5 wt% Pt-alumina catalysts were prepared for 2-propanol dehydrogenation using sol-gel method. The characteristics and the dehydrogenation reaction rate of each catalyst were investigated. Pt-alumina xerogel catalyst has excellent reaction rate and good durability in comparison with the existing alumina supported Pt catalysts. Pt-alumina aerogel catalyst had the highest reaction rate in all prepared catalysts, but sufficient aging time was necessary to maintain its reaction rate. A potential advantage of the aerogel catalyst is the fact that the high temperature heat treatment is not required. Without heat treatment or with low temperature heat treatment, the Pt-alumina aerogel catalyst has excellent reaction rate as well as durability and this gives us the economic advantage. Alumina xerogel supported Pt catalyst prepared by incipient wetness method showed good reaction rate, and had good mechanical strength. Blank alumina xerogel prepared by sol-gel method can be used for the support of metal catalysts.

  • The purpose of this study were to develop of courseware using scaffolding strategy and to investigate the effect of courseware instruction upon students' conceptual understanding and affective domain including effort and self-checking. 10th grade students in the experimental and control groups were selected from high school at Cheongwon-gun in Chungbuk, and taught about chemical reaction rate for 3 class hours. The students in the experimental group studied individually through courseware using scaffolding strategy and worksheet and teacher-centered expository lesson was used in the control group. Prior to the instructions, test specification for problem-solving assessment (TSPSA) was administered and the scores of the previous science achievement test were obtained. After the instructions, the posttest on conceptual understanding and TSPSA were administered. Results of this study revealed that the mean score of the experimental group in the conceptual understanding test was similar to that of the control group at statistically significant level. This result implies that the courseware using scaffolding strategy could be a tool of the individualized instruction. The experimental group improved significantly better in three components of the TSPSA such as effort, self-checking, and cognitive strategy. From this result, it is considered that learners' self regulation is improved by being taken over responsibility of learning. So, it is suggested that instruction using scaffolding strategy is needed in science class to improve self-leading learning ability.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify secondary chemistry teachers' abilities to carry-out experiment lesson successfully. As far as the research method is concerned, literature reviews, analyses of abilities to carry-out experimentation from science textbooks, and a survey of science teachers' perceptions of experimental ability were employed along with the progressive discussions among the authors. In order to identify secondary chemistry teachers' abilities to carry-out experimentation, we divided the experiment lesson into three stages of preparation, conduct and arrangement, and management of lab, and added the stage of safety. Each stage is classified into sub-areas, and the sub-area consists of subordinate elements. The safety stage was included separately to emphasize the importance of the safety issue in lab and experimental activities. The secondary chemistry teachers' abilities to carry-out experimentation are the abilities to perform experiments in person, presupposing the instruction of experiment, and can be featured with the use of reagent and measuring instruments, the preparation of sample, designing experiment, correct experimental habit and skillfulness, data processing, analysis and reasoning, and management of lab and safety.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the effect of forest fire on physical and chemical properties of soil. The forest fire was in April 1997 in pinus densiflora dominant forest at Chungju of Chungbuk. After forest fire, dead trees were not cut. Soil samples were collected at 0-5, 5-10, and 10-20cm soil depths in November 1998 from the burned and unburned sites. The analyzed factors were soil organic matter, total N, available P, exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg, and CEC, pH, bulk density, and moisture content. There was no forest floor in burned site, but unburned site has the forest floor of 4cm thick. There were no differences in soil organic matter, total N, available P, exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg, and CEC, pH, bulk density, moisture content in all soil depth, between burned and unburned sites, except in available P in 5-10cm soil depth. Forest fire had not changed the physical and chemical soil properties in this study. However, burning of vegetation and forest floor organic matter may have adverse influence on long-term site productivity.

  • Appressorial formation of Pyricularia oryzae on leaves showed no marked difference between highly resistant Tongil and susceptible Norm No. 6. Race N-2 of the blast fungus penetrated directly into motor cells of susceptible cultivar Norm No. 6, later extensively spreading hyphae were developed, while in the cultivar Tongil, after penetration, no further hyphal extension resulted. In discoloration of infected tissues, the highly resistant cultivar Tongil not only discolored rapidly, but also the percentage of discolored cells was higher than the susceptible cultivars, Jinheung and Norm No. 6. The respiratory rate, was generally higher in infected tissue than in healthy tissue. No significant difference in the respiration rate of resistant Suwon No. 180 was not found between the infected and healthy leaf tissue, whereas, in susceptible Jinheung, a marked increase in respiratory rate was caused by blast infection. The respiratory rate increased at the appearance of the first visible symptom in all cultivars resistant or susceptible. Higher peroxidase activity was found in infected tissues as compared with healthy tissue. Peroxidase activity increased in resistant and susceptible reactions. Particularly, in resistant reaction, the increase of the activity was more pronounced. In highly resistant reaction, there was no difference in peroxidase activity between healthy and infected tissues. Ascorbic acid oxidase, hydroquinone oxidase and catechol oxidase had the same trend as the peroxidase. In contrast, activity of catalase rather decreased in leaf tissues infected with compatible races of the fungus.

  • The external ultrastructural morphology and distribution of antennal sensilla and hair-pencils of Palpita indica (Saunder) were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The antennal flagellum of male and female has six types of sensilla: long trichodea, short trichodesa, chaetica, coeloconicum around spines, camaniformia and styloconica. There are sexual differences in antennae of P. indica. The female antenna has a coeloconicum sensillum without spines nearby the long trichodea sensilla on ninth flagellomere. Otherwise, auricillica sensilla are distribute on the basal segment of male antenna. These structures are not showed in the female antenna. There are a lot of pores on the hair tufts of the male hair-pencils.

  • The multicolored Asian lady beetles (Harmonia axyridis) has characteristic color patterns, which show great variability within species. Up to now, it has been well known that main factors affected on individual color pattern variations in the population of H axyridis are external, physical, and environmental characteristics. Indeed, there is as yet no evidence to indicate whether the variation is genetic or environmental factors. Also the factors which produce this variation are unknown in this species, although it is suspected that much of the variation is under genetic control. However, the genetic relationships among many of color types were investigated by observing the progeny of each particular pairs. It is worth mentioning a few particular breeding cases to illustrate certain facets of variability, and to indicate examples suitable for genetic analysis of the color pattern variation.
