  • Objectives This study aimed to investigate the status of Chuna manual therapy(CMT) usage before and after COVID-19 social distancing measures. Methods This study utilized Health Insurance data from April 2019 to May 2023. Quarterly data were collected for Simple Chuna (code 40710), Complex Chuna (code 40720;50% patient expense), Complex Chuna (code 40721;80% patient expense), and Special Chuna (code 40730). Results During the period covered by health insurance, the number of CMT patients was 8,315,838, with 19,332,786 instances of CMT, and a total cost of 544,651,407 won. Due to COVID-19, the application of CMT decreased in the first quarter of 2020, but recovered from 2021, showing an increase in usage by the first quarter of 2023. The decline in the use of all medical institutions in the fourth quarter is believed to be due to restrictions on health insurance coverage for CMT. Conclusions Further research on CMT health insurance is necessary. This research should inform discussions on policies aimed at expanding health insurance coverage for CMT.

  • Objectives : This study aimed to introduce a new traction therapy and proposes that a new Chuna manual therapy technique could be implemented. Methods : The patient is placed in the prone position and their ankle is fixed to the fixing table. Next, clinicians contact on the vertebral spinal process above herniated disc region with the tissue pulled head part of scaphoid bone and the lower part of the pelvis is pulled horizontally to the foot. Conclusions : It was recently identified that traction while maintaining lumbar lordosis is more effective for lumbar disc herniation and is associated with fewer side effects. Chuna manual therapy also uses a technique of lumbar flexion-distraction manipulation to treat HIVD. further research is required.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of hominis placenta pharmacopuncture and chuna manual therapy in patients with frozen shoulder. Methods: Frozen shoulder was treated with hominis placenta pharmacopuncture and chuna manual therapy, and the overall shoulder pain was measured by visual analog scale (VAS), and the range of motion (ROM) of shoulder movement was evaluated by measuring passive abduction and external rotation and active hand to shoulder blade test. Results: After the treatment, overall shoulder pain was reduced, and ROM of passive abduction and external rotation was increased. Conclusions: The above results show that hominis placenta pharmacopuncture and chuna manual therapy can be used as an effective treatment for frozen shoulder.

  • Objectives : To determine the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy(CMT) for Adult Visceral Diseases. Methods : To find evidence of CMT for adult digestive system disease, we used 9 electronic databases(Pubmed, CAJ, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, KISS, KISTI, NDSL, RISS) up to April 2018. We reviewed randomized control trials(RCTs) using Chuna for Digestive system disease. To assess the methodological quality of each RCT, we used the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results : We identified 11 RCTs about irritable bowel syndrome, chronic ulcerative colitis, gastritis, gastroptosis, spleen entropathy, gastrointestinal dysfunction after stroke in 356 studies. All studies used total efficiency rate for main outcome. In all studies, CMT was effective for digestive system disease. Conclusions : CMT was effective for Digestive system disease. Risk of bias was high and the difference between the experimental group and the control group was not great. Considering that there were no reports of side effects, it seems possible to apply CMT to the treatment of adult digestive system disease.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to report the improved case of bilateral avascular necrosis(AVN) of femur head treated with Korean medicine and Fascia Chuna Therapy Methods : The patient diagnosed with bilateral AVN is hospitalized at department of korean rehabilitation medicine, Samse hospital of korean medicine. The subject is treated by herbal medicine, acupuncture, SBV and hip joint gyoung-geon chuna. This study was measured by visual analogue scale(VAS) score, walking time without pain per 6 minutes and harris hip score(HHS). Results : The patient showed decreased VAS score, HHS and improved walking time without pain per 6 minutes after treated with korean medicine and hip joint Fascia Chuna Therapy. Conclusions : The patient showed reduced pain and positive effect on activities of daily living.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy (CMT) for the treatment of tinnitus. Methods : We performed a literature search using eight electronic databases, using related keywords, from January 1990 until the end of April 2019. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which evaluated the effectiveness of CMT in the treatment of tinnitus were included in this study. The risk of bias were evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results : Five appropriate RCTs were included and analyzed. The efficacy rate of the CMT group was statistically significantly higher (P<0.03) versus the control group treated with Western medicine, acupuncture, and herbal medicine-only. Conclusions : In this literature review, there was sufficient evidence that CMT is more effective than conventional therapy (including Western medicine, acupuncture, and herbal medicine) in treating tinnitus. However, it should be considered that the included studies lacked any reference of the risk of bias

  • Objectives To evaluate the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy (CMT) for postpartum hypogalactia. Methods Using nine electronic databases, we selected 13 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that applied CMT for postpartum hypogalactia and conducted a meta-analysis. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results Meta-analysis showed statistically significant results for CMT in terms of effective rate and breast filling degree compared to the other treatment groups (p<0.05). Conclusions Our study showed clinical evidence of CMT efficacy for postpartum hypogalactia. Further studies are required to support our findings.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy for shoulder pain in hemiplegic patients after stroke. Methods For a systematic review and meta-analysis, we set a key question in accordance with participants, intervention, comparison, outcome, study design (PICO-SD). we searched for clinical studies that conducted chuna manual therapy for shoulder pain in hemiplegic patients after stroke 7 databases until September 2019. Only randomized controlled trials were chosen. Results Total 14 randomized controlled trials were chosen for systematic review and meta-analysis. 9 studies used efficacy rate as evaluation tool, and 8 used visual analogue scale. Pressure method (壓力型) was used in 11 studies, followed by osteopathy method (整骨型) and wave motion method (波動型) in 9 studies. Chuna manual therapy showed statistically significant pain reduction effect. Through meta analysis, Chuna manual therapy showed significant pain reducing effect except the study with Chuna manual therapy and electroacupuncture compared to electroacupuncture only. Conclusion As a result, Chuna manual therapy showed statistically significant effect in pain reduction. However, almost studies were evaluated in a state of having probable high risk of bias. This suggests that it requires attention to make an interpretation in this study. Furthermore, more clinical research need to be accomplished in the future.

  • Objectives : Many studies are being done in the method of experimental chuna science in China. The aim of this review is to understand and study the methods of experimental chuna science, focusing on the effects of chuna on nervous system. Methods : We reviewed "實驗推拿學"(experimental tuina science) and Chinese journals were searched using China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI). Korean journals were searched using 3 Korean web databases(OASIS, NDSL, RISS). Results : By experimental chuna science, analgesic effect of chuna, therapeutic action of chuna on stroke, therapeutic action on polio, effect of modulating autonomic nerves of chuna and effect of modulating thermoregulatory centers of chuna were proved. Conclusions : Experimental chuna science is necessary for development of chuna to a higher level. In Korea, not a lot experimental studies are being done, especially in chuna. For this reason we need to learn and adapt the methods of experimental chuna science of China.
