This experiment was conducted to know the characteristics of kernel growth as affected by various temperature regimes during grain filling using the varieties Hwaseongbyeo, Ilpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo. The rice plants tested were grown in the natural condition at 1/5000a Wagner pots until flowering. After flowering, the rice plants were moved to controlled temperature conditions in a phytotron. The minimum/maximum daily temperature in the phytotron was controlled by 12/18, 15/21, 18/24, 21/27, and 24/$30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The grain weights were measured every three days after treatment. The mean daily kernel growth rate during active grain filling period showed different responses among varieties under various temperature regimes. The kernel growth rate of Chucheongbyeo was seriously reduced as temperature regimes were decreased. However, that of Ilpumbyeo was not influenced so critically. Ilpumbyeo showed some advantages in grain filling under low temperature regimes compared to Chucheongbyeo. The lag phase in grain filling of Chucheongbyeo was the longest among tested varieties, followed by Hwaseongbyeo under daily mean temperature regime of $15^{\circ}C$. Kernel weight of Ilpumbyeo increased fast in early grain filling phase under low temperature. This characteristic may be favorable for grain filling in temperate zone where the daily mean temperature is drastically dropped during grain filling period. Regression analysis with kernel growth rate and temperature showed the estimated critical low temperature for grain filling among varieties were $9^{\circ}C$, $12^{\circ}C$, $13^{\circ}C$ in Ilpumbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo and Chucheongbyeo, respectively. Under moderate temperature the duration of grain filling of Ilpumbyeo was longer than that of Chucheongbyeo. However, Under low temperature that of Ilpumbyeo was more favorable than Chucheongbyeo.

This study was carried out to analysis the factor effected by milling rice rate, and to provide the developing rice varieties and cultivation technology. Panicle numbers per spike of Ilpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo were 105 and 70, respectively. The primary branch panicle rate was Ilpumbyeo 56.2% and Chucheongbyeo 61.4%. The secondary panicle rate of Ilpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo was 43.3% and 37.9%, respectively. Grain filling rate using specific gravity showed that Ilpumbyeo was the lower filling rate than Chucheongbyeo. Hull weight per one grain was Ilpumbyeo 41.9 mg and Chucheongbyeo 3.92 mg, and hull weight per rough rice 1 kg was Ilpumbyeo 157.36 g and Chucheongbyeo 151.31 g. In milling rate, brown rice ratio by ripening degree of llpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo with combine harvest was 81.22% and 82.52%. Milled/brown rice ration of llpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo showed 92.14% and 92.51%. The milling recovery ratio of llpumbyeo was decreased 1.67% then Chucheongbyeo, and the difference was mainly due to the hull weight (0.61%), milled/brown rice ratio (0.37%) and ripening degree (0.69%). Although the varietal differences were found in hull weight and millied/brown rice ratio between llpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo, the ripening degree was considered as the factor that could be reduced by cultivation technology and post-harvest management.

This study was conducted to compare the quality characteristics of Korean traditional wine fermented from different rice cultivars. Two kinds of rice cultivars, Seolgaengbyeo and Chucheongbyeo, were used. The hardness values of Seolgaengbyeo and Chucheongbyeo were 2126.6 g/sec and 4056.1 g/sec. The alkali digestion value (ADV) and amylose contents of Seolgaengbyeo and Chucheongbyeo were 6.6 and 6.4, 19.8 and 19.3%, respectively. Amylogram results were not significantly different between Seolgaengbyeo and Chucheongbyeo using a rapid visco analyzer (RVA). After fermentation for 7 days, the alcohol contents of the fermented wines ranged from 17.34 to 17.53%. The pH, total acidity, and glucose contents of the wines fermented with Seolgaengbyeo and Chucheongbyeo were 3.63 and 3.64, 0.17 and 0.17 mg/mL, 3.22 and 3.65 mg/mL, respectively. Finally, sensory evaluation of wine fermented with Seolgaengbyeo showed better taste than that of wine made with Chucheongbyeo.

In order to obtain basic data for the preparation of rice flour, chemical properties of grain layers were compared using Chucheongbyeo and Samgangbyeo, which are Japonica and Tongil type rice, respectively. The amylose contents of L6(center) layer in two different type of rice were the highest among 6 layers of rice grain tested. Reduction in amylose content was observed as the layer reached the surface, resulting in the lowest amylose content in the L0 layer. Amylose contents of L6 layer of Chucheongbyeo and Sangangbyeo were 3 and 2.2 times higher than those of L1 layer, respectively. Crude protein content of the L2 layer was the highest among 6 layers of rice grain tested and 2.2~2.5 times higher than that of whole milled rice. Crude fat content of grain layer was reduced as reaching the center layer. The crude fat contents of L6 layer of grain were 0.21% and 0.25% in Chucheongbyeo and Samgangbyeo, respectively. Most of free and bound lipids in L0 layer of two different rices were 69 : 31 and 79.5 : 20.5, respectively. Bound lipid content of grain layers increased as reaching the center layer. Major fatty acids in free lipids of both cultivars were linoleic acid, oleic acid, and palmitic acid. Linoleic acid content was higher than oleic acid in Chucheongbyeo, but oleic acid content was higher in Samgangbyeo. Palmitic and myristic acid contents of Chucheongbyeo were higher than those of Samgangbyeo, but stearic and linolenic acid contents were lower than those of Samgangbyeo.
This study was conducted to determine the inheritance of the ability of callus formation and plant regeneration in seed cultures of rice. The culturabilities of three Japonica rices,'Chucheongbyeo', 'Nagdongbyeo', and 'Daeribbyeo 1', were higher than those of Tongil type cultivars, 'Milyang 23' and 'Samgangbyeo 'The frequency for callus growth in F₂ populations of the three crosses, 'Milyang 23/Chucheongbyeo', 'Milyang 23/Daeribbyeo 1', and' Samgangbyeo/Nagdongbyeo', revealed a nearly normal distribution. The broad-sense heritability estimated from the ability of callus formation in the crosses were ranged from 83.8% to 90.1%. The frequency distribution of plant regenerability in F₂ population of 'Milyang 23/Daeribbyeo 1' showed a continuous variation. But the segregation mode of plant regenerability from seed-derived callus in the F₂ progenies of 'Milyang 23/Chucheongbyeo' and 'Samgangbyeo/Nagdongbyeo' appeared to fit the expected 3 : 1 ratio for the high and low regenerability. These results suggest that the high plant regenerability of 'Chucheongbyeo' and 'Nagdongbyeo' was regulated by a single dominant gene.
In order to understand the effect of irrigation constraint on the growth and yield of the rice plant. two rice cultivars. Samnambyeo and Chucheongbyeo. were cultured in the pot controlled with different water levels: + 2 cm-submergence, and -17cm, -37cm, -57cm, -77cm, -97cm, -120cm, and -145cm depth from soil surface. 1. Among differently irrigated conditions, submerged condition was the best in growth and yield of both Samnambyeo and Chucheongbyeo. Yield and growth of rice decreased linearly with lowering the water level in sequence. 2. Samnambyeo appeared to be more drought resistant cultivar than Chucheongbyeo. It was regarded that physiologically critical water level on rice yield was about 70cm depth in Samnambyeo and 50cm depth in Chucheongbyeo. 3. The earliest heading date of the rice plant was from submergence condition and the head ing date was linearly delayed with lowering water level in sequence. The heading date of Samnambyeo was about 10days earlier than that of Chucheongbyeo at the same water level.
This study was carried out to find out rice quality of Chucheongbyeo cultivated on Gyeonggj and other province. Rice type, color difference, amylograph of milled rice and texturograph of cooked rice were not significant between two cultivated region. And fat, protein, Mg and Ca in milled rice were not significant but p, K and Na were significantly different at l% the level between them as 2, 210~2, 420ppwt 1, 304~1, 538ppm and 212~236ppm in Gyeonggi province cultivated rice, and 2, 130~2, 180ppm, 1, 133~1, 180ppm and 197~217ppm in other province, respectively. Also amylose content, alkali distribution and gel consistency were not significant between them.
Retrogradation characteristics of the acetylated and raw starch were investigated with the chucheongbyeo and Samkangbyeo. The freeze-thaw stability and syneresis on starch gel were more stable and lower in acetylated rice starch, suggested that the rice starch acetylated with acetyl group is more stable in the various conditions. The retrogradation time constant of acetylated rice starch gel from the Chucheongbyeo and Samkangbyeo which were measured at 5$^{\circ}C$ storage were 11.7 days and 10.2 days, respectively. In addition, the retrogradation time constant in 21$^{\circ}C$ were 50.5 days and 49.8 days, indicating that retrogradation was noticiably retarded in this occation.
To make of basic date for the progressive global brand of Korean rice, we compared with characteristics of Calrose and two Korean rice cultivar, Chucheongbyeo(medium-late maturing cultivar) and Odaebyeo(early-maturing cultivar). General characteristics of rice, pasting property of rice flour by Rapid visco Analyser, determination of optimal ratio of water to rice for cooking by electric and pressure cooker and eating quality(sensory evaluation) of Calrose with that of Korean rice cooked at the optimal cooking conditions were measured. One kernel length of Calrose, Chucheongbyeo and Odaebyeo were 6.00, 4.73 and 5.22 mm, respectively. Calrose showed higher viscosity(195 RVU) in all parameters than Korean rices(Chucheongbyeo 176 RVU, Odaebyeo 178 RVU), of which the values were similar. These data imply that the properties of starch of Calrose may be different from that of Korean rice. In general, it is agreed, in Korea and Japan, that the balance of hardness and stickiness of cooked rice is very important. However, stickiness and overall eating quality for cooked Calrose was significantly poorer than Korean rices. Cooked Calrose did not significantly different in hardness, stickiness and overall eating quality compared with those of Korean rices. Calrose cooked with the ratio of water to rice of 1.4 with electric cooker was less sticky than Korean rices and thus was poorer in eating quality compared with Korean counterparts. Calrose cooked with the ratio of water to rice of 1.3 with pressure cooker had the same eating quality with Korean rices.
Diurnal changes in levels of endogenous gibberellins(GAs) were investigated in three rice cultivars i.e. Sangjubyeo, Shingeumobyeo(photo-neutral) and Chucheongbyeo(photosensitive). The rice cultivars were grown under a 12-hr photoperiod and endogenous GA levels were assayed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS-SIM) every 3 h for 24 h. The endogenous bioactive $GA_1$ and its immediate precursor $GA_{20}$ contents were significantly different in both photosensitive and photo-neutral rice cultivars, though less pronounced differences were observed for endogenous $GA_{12},\;GA_{53},\;GA_{19}$, and $GA_8$ levels with in the three rice cultivars. The levels of bioactive $GA_1$ and its immediate precursor $GA_{20}$ were significantly higher in Chucheongbyeo than in the other two cultivars. In Chucheongbyeo, the $GA_1$ contents increased significantly from 11.00 to 17.00 o'clock, thus indicating a correlation with light. In Shingeumobyeo, $GA_1$ contents slightly increased during morning hours, while a similar hike in $GA_1$ contents was observed for Sangjubyeo during evening hours. $GA_{19}$ was found to be the most abundant GA form in the three rice cultivars. Our results suggested that GA production in rice depends upon the response potential of rice cultivars and that light positively correlated to GA production in photosensitive rice cultivar.
