  • Four species of Paraphysomonas collected from the fast- ice covered area Syowa Station, East Ongul Island ($69^{\circ}00'S,\;39^{\circ}35'$) ,Antarctica occurred in the seawater throughout the year and occasionally in the sea ice. P.. antarctica is distributed to a water depth of 35m at 51.3 during the period from August 1983 to January 1984 and also down to 600m St. 5 in September 1983 at cell concentrations of 300-350 cells/ml. The Paraphysomonas spp. were dominant during the period from July to November 1983 in the area studied. The mode of the occurrence and vertical distribution of Paraphysomonas apparently coresponds to those of the bacteria and orgarnic debris-like matter in the seawater. The main components of the plankton population in the area studied, under ice-covered conditions, are Paraphysomonas, Choanoflagellates and bacteria. This work clarified that Paraphysomonas is one o f the most important bacterivores in the microbial loop of the Antarctic marine ecosystem.

  • In this study, we investigated vertical distribution and seasonal changes of phytophlankton community in the Hae-Dong Reservoir from March 1999 to Feburary 2000. This reservoir is relativly small (surface area, 2.7 $km^2$) and is the source of drinking water supply to the eastern part of Pusan City. Samples were collected at 2 sites (1, 3, and 6 m; site 1, in front of the dam; site 2, inlet). The dominant group was Bacillriophyceae at both sites (over 63%), and other groups exhibited seasonal changes (high cyanobacterial density in summer; green algal communities in winter). Chrysophyceae and Dinophyceae were maintained lower level during the study period. Along the water depth, all classess of phytoplankton did not show distintive vertical distribution at both sites except during the blue-green algal bloom in the middle of July and late September. The phytoplankton community dynamics in the Hoe-Dong Reservoir was strongly affected by the hydrological factors such as concentrated precipitation and short retention time.

  • Based on both field and laboratory experiments, seasonal changes in the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton in the gut contents of the jedo venus clam, Protothaca jedoensis, and its feeding selectivity were investigated. The phytoplankton in the gut contents comprised Bacillariophyceae (diatom), Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, and Dinophyceae, of which the diatoms being the most predominant throughout the year. Although the number of species and the abundance of phytoplankton in the sea water were always more diverse and more abundant than in the gut contents, the relative number and abundance were generally similar in the seawater and in the gut contents. In the laboratory experiments, the relative abundances of Coscinodiscus marginatus and Thalassirosira eccentrica were much more higher in the gut contents than any other algal species, while Paralia sulcata, Skeletonema costatum, and Eucampia zodiacus were abundant in order of cell density in the ambient water. These results suggest that P. jedoensis may feed preferably on single algal cell or smaller chains of algal cells.

  • Three embankments, namely Changpo, Bokkil and Guil, in Chunggye Bay were investigated to assess the influence of environmental changes to phytoplankton size structure, distribution of species and standing crops. Three stations was sampled near at each embankment in Nov. 2006, Feb. 2007, May 2007 and Aug. Phytoplankton were classified into net-size (>20${\mu}m$) and nano-size (<20${\mu}m$). In summer, the freshwater discharge seemed to have influence in the decrease of salinity and in the increase of turbidity, ammonium and phosphorus concentrations. Chl a concentration and phytoplankton abundance in Feb. 2007 were observed to be generally higher in all stations compared to other periods. Net-size phytoplankton was observed to be higher in Feb. 2007 and May 2007 compared to nano-sized phytoplankton. However, there was shift in phytoplankton composition in Nov. 2006 and Aug. 2007. Phytoplankton under seven class (Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Cryptophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae, Euglenophyceae) was identified during the study period. It was found out that the major phytoplankton class was Bacillariophyceae. Phytoplankton was more diverse in autumn compared to any other season. Cyanophyceae was increased in summer. In rainy season, change in physical factors (salinity, transparency) seemed to have more influence on phytoplankton growth compared to inorganic nutrients.

  • A study on silica-scaled chrysophytes(Chrysophyceae and Synurophyceae) from Mt. Sinbul alpine wetland, South Korea was performed from January 2018 to March 2020 using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We found a total of 19 taxa of silica-scaled chrysophytes; Mallomonas(13); Synura (3); Chromophysomonas (1); Chrysosphaerella (1); and Paraphysomonas(1), of which six taxa, including two new species(Mallomonas dimorphus sp. nov. and Mallomonas alpestris sp. nov.), were reported for the first time in Korea. All the species are illustrated with SEM micrographs and briefly described with regard to their taxonomy. Two new species were described based on the cell shape, size and ultrastructure of the scales and bristles. Mallomonas dimorphus sp. nov. belongs to the Sectio Heterospinae in that its scales have a flat dome, a reticulated secondary layer and needle shaped bristles. However, this species is distinguished from other taxa in the Sectio by two different patterns of shield ornamentation and a dome ornamentation. Mallomonas alpestris sp. nov. belongs to Series Torquatae (Sectio Torquatae) characterized elongated domed collar scales, domeless body scales and rear scales with a short spine. However, it is different from all other taxa in the Sectio Torquatae as well as Series Torquatae by shield ornamentation of the body and rear scales with evenly spaced transverse ribs and papillae.

  • Seasonal occurrences and dynamics on the freshwater algae were examined in the upstream of the Yongsan river system with the Kwangju service water area from 1993 to 1994. Three hundred and three taxi were totally collected and composed of 6 classes, 15 orders, 7 suborders, 31 families, 74 genera, 248 species, 48 varieties and 7 forma. Compositions in each algal class were divided in 136 taxi of Chlorophyceae(44.8% ), 109 taxi of Bacillariophyceae(36.0% ), 30 taxa of Cyanophyceae(10.1% ), 21 taxa of Euglenophyceae(6. 9% ),4 taxi of Chrysophyceae(1.3% ) and 3 taxa of Dinophyceae(1.0% ). The occurrence of taxa was a markedly decrease(-62) between summer and autumn, the critically increase(+43) between spring and summer. And also, it was indicated that the high frequency of taxa in summer, but the high standing biomass In winter in spite of low taxi. In general, it has much algal biomass in station 9 and 10, but low in station 4, 5 and 11, relatively. Through this survey, the major dominant taxa in algal biomass, Microcystis aeruginosa, Melosira varians, Synedra ulna and Navicula cryptocephala, they were all above 2.1×10$^{6}$ce11s/1, 13.2% of totals. There are about 10% of new emigrated taxa by season and they showed a remarkable succession. We may suggested that this system was well sustained for the habitat of freshwater algal community with low dominance and high diversity. Twenty three of nuisance algae including of Microcystis aeruginosa, Peridinium willei and Anabaena flos-aquae were distributed as if had low appearance. Of course, many of them were saprobiontic taxa, extraordinary growttung groups depend on organic loading in water system and also it was not showed severe algal blooming phenomenon.

  • In order to elucidate chatracteristics of water quality and seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton community in Kyungpo lake, the weekly variation of algal population and 11 environmental factors were investigated from March 1998 to February 1999. A total 121 species of phytoplankton belonged to 57 genera, 4 genera 7 species of the Euglenophyceae, 1 genera 2 species of the Chrysophyceae, 2 genera 3 species of the Cryptophyceae, 1 genera 1 species of the Dinophyceae, 6 genera 9 species of the Cyanophyceae, 28 genera 78 species of the Bacillario-phyceae and 15 genera 21 species of the Chlorophyceae, was identified. Cryptomonas sp., Chamydomonas sp., Nitzschia frustulum, Oscillatoria sp., Lyngbya sp, and Dictyosphaerium pulchellum occurred successively as dominant phytoplankton species from March 1998 to February 1999. Density of phytoplankton cell number showed the peak in early April when Chlamydomoas sp. was dominated. The diversity index of phytoplankton community showed low values in the dominating period of Cryptomonas sp. and Chlamydomonas sp. The concentration of chlorophyll a fluctuated between 1.09 and 107.7$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$. Water temperature, salinity, DO, conduc tivity and SS were ranged 0.5-27.8$^{\circ}C$, 2.8-25.2 ppt, 4.62-19.21 mgO$_2$ㆍ1$^{-1}$, 5.33-34.76 mS/cm and 0.017-0.184 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$, respectively. Annual means of Secchi disc transparency was 36cm and thai of pH value was 8.5. The concentrations of PO$_4$-P was ranged 0.0012-0.077 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$ , and showed high value from August to October. The concentrations of NO$_2$-N, NO$_3$-N and NH$_4$-N was ranged 0.0011-0.1 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$, 0.074-3.33mgㆍ1$^{-1}$ and 0.0024-0.259 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$, respectively. Among environmental factors, water temperature was negatively correlated with DO, salinity and conductivity, DO was positively correlated with salinity and conductivity. Chlorophyll a, one of the indicies of eutropication in lake, was negatively correlated with NH$_4$-N. The cell density of Cryptomonas sp., which was the most dominant species in this lake, was negatively correlated with transparency. • This study was carried out to investigate the charateristics of environmental factors and the species compositions of phytoplanktons and periphytons in order to analyze the marine ecosystem (DOK1-3) with freshwater (Mul) in the coast of Dokdo. Mean values of conductivity (TSD) (44.3 mS cm–1), total dissolved solids (30.9 mg L–1), salinity (31.8 psu), total suspended solids (39.2 mg L–1), and ash-free dry matter (AFDM) (8.8 mg L–1) were higher in DOK1- 3 than those in Mul (3.2 mS cm–1, 2.3 mg L–1, 1.9 psu, 2.8 mg L–1 and 2.8 mg L–1, espectively), while mean amounts of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) (7.5 μg P L–1) and soluble reactive silicon (SRS) (0.1 μg Si L–1) were significantly lower in DOK1-3 than those in Mul (117.3 μg P L–1 and 4,105 μg Si L–1, respectively). The phytoplanktons was a total of 59 species in Dokdo, which were composed of 1 species (1.7%) for Chrysophyceae, 43 species (72.9%) for Bacillariophyceae and 15 species (25.4%) for Dinophyceae. The biomass (Chl-a, phaeopigment and AFDM) of epilithic algae (ELA), epizooic algae (EZA) and epiphytic algae (EPA) were varied with the kinds of substrates (EPA > ELA > EZA) in the whole stations. Water environments was comparatively clean in the coast of Dokdo as comparing with those of the land. However, the monitoring of marine ecosystem in the Dokdo should be continued for species conservation according to the global warming by the climatic change.
