  • This study was carried out to investigate conveyance environment during shipping export to Japan and the optimum pre-treatment of cut Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma'. Shipping from Korea to Japan, which usually takes three to five days, requires keeping the flower at the ideal temperature. When inspection took place in Japan, the ideal temperature was lost and deterioration began. Once the ideal temperature is lost, deterioration takes place. The results of this work showed that vase life was extended by treatment Chrysal RVB and NaOCl compared to the control (distilled water), and Chrysal RVB was used to maintain the flower from bud to full bloom. Bacterial growth was not observed after pretreatment with NaOCl or $ClO_2$. However, $ClO_2$ pre-treatment was observed to affect the early growth period of the bacteria. The chlorophyll content was the highest after Chrysal RVB or NaOCl pretreatment compared to the other treatments. Therefore, these results support pretreatment with NaOCl and Chrysal RVB of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma' for export to Japan.

  • Experiments were conducted to evaluate quality and vase life of cut rose 'Rote Rose' cultivated in soil or hydroponically in rockwool. Rose flower stems harvested in commercial greenhouses in Kimhae on May 27 and June 14, 1998 were transported for about two hours to a laboratory and recut in water to an uniform stem length of 45cm. The rose flowers harvested on the same day were displayed at a density of $10cm{\times}10cm$ and were subjected to the same environmental conditions in a growth chamber. The stems were put in four different preservative solutions, 0.5% Chrysal RVB, BS (2% sucrose+200ppm 8HQS+0.3% Chrysal RVB), Sonk1 (BS+0.1mM ethionine), and double distilled $H_2O$. Flower stems harvested on May 27 were displayed at $18{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, RH 60-70%, and light intensity of 220lux provided by fluorescent lamps for $16h{\cdot}d^{-1}$. Flower stems harvested on June 14 were displayed at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, RH 70-80%, and light intensity of 220lux provided by fluorescent lamps for $16h{\cdot}d^{-1}$. Fresh weight and flower diameter were affected by cultivation method, and were greater in hydroponically-grown roses than in soil-grown roses. Among the preservative solutions, BS and Sonk1 were superior to Chrysal RVB in terms of prolonging vase life. Vase life extension in Chrysal RVB, BS and Sonk1 over the control was about one day in both display temperatures. At $18^{\circ}C$ vase life was maintained for three to four additional days as compared to that at $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Experiments were conducted to evaluate quality and vase life of cut rose ‘Rote Rose’ cultivated either in soil or hydroponically in rockwool. Rose stems were put in four different preservative solutions, 0.5% chrysal RVB, BS (2% sucrose + 200 mg. L$^{-1}$ 8HQS + 0.3% Chrysal RVB), Sonk1 (BS + 0.1 mM ethionine), and double distilled $H_2O$. Flower stems were displayed at $20\pm1^{\circ}C$, RH 60%, and light intensity of $8.1\mu$mol.$m^{-2}$ .$s^{-1}$ provided by fluorescent lamps for 16 hㆍ$d^{-1}$ Fresh weight and flower diameter during vase life were affected by cultivation method and were greater in hydroponically-grown roses than in soil-grown roses. Among preservative solutions, BS and Sonkl were superior to Chrysal RVB in terms of extending vase life. Vase life of cut rose in Chrysal RVB, BS, and Sonkl over the control was prolonged by about one day.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of wet storage solution, transport period and temperature on vase life and quality of cut flowers in standard chrysanthemum 'Jinba'. Immediately after transport, the fresh weight and flower diameter of cut flowers did not show a difference according to wet storage solutions regardless of the transport period, but as the transport period increased, the fresh weight and flower diameter increased. The flower bud stage at harvest was maintained due to the small changes in flower diameter, and the freshness of leaves was better when transported at 5℃ than at 25℃. When transported at 25℃, the longer the transport period, the lower the quality of cut flowers as some petals opened up and showed early flowering after transport. In preservative solutions, quality of cut flowers transported at 25℃ was lower than that at 5℃ due to fresh weight and diameter according to the longer transport period. The vase life of cut flowers was 1.0 day, 0.8 day, and 7.3 days longer when transported for 3, 5, and 7 days respectively at 5℃ than at 25℃. The quality of cut flowers was better due to increase in fresh weight and flower diameter, as well as vase life in wet storage solutions of ClO2 and Chrysal OVB than in tap water, regardless of transport period and temperature. There was no difference in fresh weight and vase life between ClO2 and Chrysal OVB, but flower diameter was greater in ClO2 than in Chrysal OVB. Therefore, for long-term transport of cut standard chrysanthemum 'Jinba', wet storage transport in ClO2 at 5℃ was found effective in maintaining the quality and vase life of cut flowers.

  • This study was conducted with the purpose of examining the suitability of Euphorbia jolkinii Boiss. as cut flower, so that it may be introduced as a new ornamental crop. For this purpose, effect of various holding solutions on vase solution uptake rate, vase life, and relative fresh weight of cut flowering branches of E. jolkinii was examined. After harvest, cut branches were treated with 10, 50, and $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS), 0.1 and 0.2 mM of silver thiosulfate (STS), Chrysal, and Floralife. The cut branches of E. jolkinii were placed under the environmental conditions maintained at air temperature of $22.6^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 45%, and 9/15h photoperiod that was controlled using fluorescent lamps (light intensity of $9.89{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$). A holding solution containing $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 8-HQS was found to be significantly effective for vase solution uptake rate compared to control, $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 8-HQS, and $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 8-HQS treatments. However, no significant difference was found in vase life between the branches treated with $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 8-HQS holding solution and branches of the control group. Increasing holding solution concentrations of STS was found to have negative effect on the vase life of cut E. jolkinii branches. Relative fresh weight of cut E. jolkinii branches were significantly decreased by two commercial holding solutions, Chrysal and Floralife. It is expected that these results would aid further studies on utilization of E. jolkinii as cut flower crop.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of pretreatment and shipping temperature on leaf chlorosis in cut Lilium Oriental hybrid 'Siberia'. Cut lilies were shipped under various temperatures (5, 10, 15, $25^{\circ}C$) for 5 days. When cut lilies were shipped at $25^{\circ}C$, leaf chlorosis was accelerated. However, chlorosis was significantly decreased by shipping at 5 to $15^{\circ}C$. In addition, leaf chlorosis was significantly decreased when the cut lilies were pretreated with a solution containing Promalin (BA + $GA_{4+7}$) as compared to the control. Promalin completely prevented postharvest leaf chlorosis, whereas $GA_3$ and Chrysal SVB were ineffective. Leaf chlorosis decreased more with Promalin dip treatment than with spray treatment. This pretreatment solution also extended the vase life of cut lilies. When cut lilies were pretreated with Promalin, yield (Fv/Fm) of chlorophyll fluorescence was highly maintained. Especially chlorophyll content was significant increased by Promalin treatment. Thus, shipping between 5 and $15^{\circ}C$ and Promalin dip pretreatment significantly decreased leaf chlorosis in cut 'Siberia' lilies.

  • Chrysanthemum is a cut flower species that normally lasts for 1 to 2 weeks, in some cases 3-4 weeks. This has been attributed to low ethylene production during senescence. Reduction in cut flower quality has been attributed to the formation of air embolisms that partially or completely blocks the water transport from the vase solution to the rest of the cut flower stem, increasing hydraulic resistance which may cause severe water stress, yellowing, wilting of leaf, and chlorophyll degradation. Standard type chrysanthemum can be harvested when buds were still tightly closed and then fully opened with the simple bud-opening solution. Standard type chrysanthemum can also be harvested when the minimum size of the inflorescence is about 5-6 cm bud which opened into the first flower full-sized flower. While spray varieties can be harvested when 2-4 most mature flowers have opened (40% opening). Cut flowers are sorted by stem length, weight, condition, and so on. Standard chrysanthemum is 80 cm length for standard type and 70cm for spray type. Pre-treatment with a STS, plant regulator such as GA, BA, 1-MCP, chrysal, germicide, and sucrose, significantly improved the vase life and quality of cut flowers. It is well established that vase solutions containing sugar can improve the vase life of cut chrysanthemum. Chrysanthemum is normally packed in standard horizontal fiberboard boxes. Chrysanthemum should normally be stored at $5{\sim}7^{\circ}C$. Precooling resulted in reduction in respiration, decomposition, and transpiration activities as well as decoloration retardation. There was significant difference between "wet" storage in 3 weeks and "dry" storage in 2 weeks. In separate pulsing solution trials, various germicides were tested, as well as PGRs to maintain the green color of leaves and turgidity. Prolonging vase life was attained with the application of optimal solution such as HQS, $AgNO_3$, GA, BA and sucrose. This also retarded senescence in leaves of cut flower stems. Fresh cut chrysanthemum can be transported using a refrigerated van with $5{\sim}7^{\circ}C$. Increasing consumption and usage of cut chrysanthemum of various cultivars would require efficient transport system, and effective information exchange among producer, wholesaler, and consumer.
