  • This study has focused on investigation on As and heavy metal contamination derived from metalliferous mining activities in the Choongbuk Province in Korea. Soil, mine effluent, surface water and ground water samples were taken in and around 27 abandoned metal mines, and analyzed for As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn using AAS and anions in water samples using IC. In general, the heavy metal concentrations in soils decreased with Increasing distance from the each mine audit. Tailings and mine waste soils from several mines contained over the guideline of Soil Conservation Act in Korea. Soil samples from the Seobo, Honga, Daehwa, Jeungjadong, Youngbo and Munbaek mines contained over the action levels of the metals due to intensive mining activities. Therefore, a proper remediation work needs to control the metal dispersion around the mines.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the mediation effects of relationships of parent-child and between-peers based on the effects of economic difficulty on quality of life of elementary school students. Data was obtained from students (N= 493) at seven elementary schools in Choongbuk Province and analyzed with SPSS 12.0 and Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS 5.0. The major findings are as follows: economic difficulty gives a direct effect on elementary students' quality of life and is mediated with parent-child and between-peers relationships. Also, economic difficulty influences children's quality of life when a parent-child relationship is combined with a between-peers relationship. On the basis of these results, this study suggests that welfare centers and elementary schools have to teach students to have desirable sense of value. Also, schools need to provide education programs for parents to improve parent-child relationship and various activities for students to develop between-peers relationship.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate site-based environmental education(EE) programs. For the evaluation, an evaluation chart was developed. The chart was consisted of twenty evaluation items in the following six categories : 'goals & objectives', 'instructional planning', 'instruction', 'learning outcomes & evaluation', 'features of program', and 'program operation'. One hundred sixty five site-based EE programs, funded by the Korean Ministry of Environment in 2000, were evaluated. After the evaluation, the programs were also categorized and analyzed according to regions, organizations, and amount of funds. The results indicated that awareness, participation, and attitude were addressed in the purpose of the programs, while knowledge and skills were not. The diversity of activities and teaching strategies of the programs were insufficient. Cultural aspects, fairness, originality, and accuracy were also insufficiently addressed. Assessment and evaluation of such programs were needed to be considered to a larger degree. From the analysis of programs according to categories, Choongbuk province in the regional aspect and schools in the organizational aspect got higher scores than others. Overall, the more funding the program received, the higher score it got in evaluation. Some improvements and strategies for activating site-based EE were recommended based on the result of the evaluation.

  • The objectives of this study was to identify genetic variations of Tricholoma matsutake (S. Ito et Imai) Sing. growing in different geographic ranges in South Korea. Mushrooms were collected during fruiting seasons from 1994 to 1997 from 11 major sites which included four sites (Bonghwa, UIjin, Goryoung, and Chungdo) in Kyongbuk Province, three sites (Changnyung, Hadong, and Hamyang) in Kyongnam Province, two sites (Yangyang and Inje) in Kangwon Province, one site (Goisan) in Choongbuk Province, and one site (Namwon) in Chonbuk Province. Two mushrooms each from three to eight shiros in each sites were collected. Genetic characteristics were analyzed by Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat Polymerase Chain Reaction (I-SSR PCR) method using six primers. With a total of 131 DNA bands identified, Nei's genetic distance and UPGMA tree were constructed. It was estimated that genetic variations between sites amounted to 12.9%, while 87.1% of total variation was explained by variations among individuals within sites. The cluster analysis indicated that the eleven major sites were clustered into four groups, group I (Yangyang, Hamyang, Inje, Hadong and UIjin), group II (Changnyung, Namwon and Chungdo), group III (Goryoung), and group IV (Bonghwa and Goisan). It is concluded that matsutake mushrooms in South Korea have a considerable degree of genetic variations between major sites.

  • A farming area located near an abandoned copper mine in GuPo-ri, Choongchung province is heavily contaminated with heavy metals such as As, Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn of which concentrations are higher than the values typically detected in Korean soil environment. In this work, laboratory and field studies were conducted to examine feasibility of using Ca-citrate-phosphate solution in stabilizing heavy metals in the polluted soils. In laboratory batch experiments with field soil, the addition of Ca-citrate-phosphate solution resulted in decrease of aqueous phase concentration of phosphate and improvement of heavy metal stabilization, compared to those for sterilized soil samples. This indicates that microbial uptake of phosphate may have provided positive effects on availability of phosphate toward heavy metal stabilization. According to microbial community analysis for the field experiment, the use of Ca-citrate-phosphate led to increased diversity of microbial populations, and strict anaerobic microorganisms such as Anaerofilum and Treponema became the most dominant populations in the solution-amended field experiments. These findings suggest that, when Ca-citrate-phosphate is used for heavy metal stabilization in soils, microbial processes may have important roles in improving the stabilization of heavy metals by providing reducing conditions to the treatment locations or/and by making phosphate available to heavy metal stabilization.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify how the Korean tobacco farming region has been geographically formed by natural and cultural environments, and to examine and cultural environments, and to examine whether it can be recognized as a major part of agricultultural regions. The questions asked in this study are associated with the spatial diffusion of tobacco cultivation, the patterns and processes of the farming region from 1900 to 1960, and the regional characteristics of the concentrated farming area since 1960. The study is inductively approached and most data used were collected from old records and field works. The delineation of the tobacco farming region was derived by applying the concept of the uniform region. Tobacco was introduced through Japan during the years of Kwang Hae Kun (1616-1622). According to the old records, three places, Waekwan, Dongrae, and Ulsan, were the first tobacco raising areas. In the 1700's the well-known tobacco farming regions were scattered all around the nation in places like Jinan, Samdeung, Seongcheon, Gangdong, Yeongweol and Yeongyang. This distributon pattern suggests that tobacco farming in Korea developed spatially along main traffic routes before the 1700's. Untill the 1920's the pattern of tobacco regions was relatively static. Since the 1920's, it has shown a pattern of concentration in the Choongbuk province, where the new highly productive yellow tobacco has been introduced. It was not until the 1960's that yellow tobacco instead of the native variety came to be cultivated all over the country. In the 1960's, the tobacco farming region tended to be concentrated and localized in north western Choongnam, northern Cheonbuk, Choongbuk, and Kyeongbuk including Cheongsong, Andong, and Yeongyang. Since 1970, tobacco production has declined in some of the former major areas of cultivation in terms of its density, while there have appeared highly concentrated areas in Cheongsong and Andong, centered around Yeongyand. There has also emerged a secondary major concentrated area along the coast including such places as Kochang, Yeongkwang and Mooan. The appearance of the Yeongyang tobacco area as the most important core region can be described as follows; at first this area has the disadvantage of being in competition with other places for selling cash crops besides tobacco, because it is located in a mountain zone and it is far from the major metropolises of Seoul and Pusan. Thus has been formed the farming mentality that agricultural management makes the most profit on farming tobacco because tobacco is stable in price and selling routes. As a result of this longstanding belief, these areas (Yeongyang, Cheongsong and Andong) have developed into tobacco concentrated regions. Finally, the tobacco concentrated regions of Korea have changed through time. The factors affecting this change have been the kind of tobacco grown, the monopoly system, agricultural techniques and the expansion of arable land through the clearing of slopes. In conclusion, the research indicates that the localized and concentrated patterns of tobacco cultivation are geographically typical. Thus, recognition of tobacco farming region is important to understanding the agricultural region of Korea as a whole.

  • Many infra suructure such as road, railway, building and utility foundations have been damaged by the repeated freezing and thawing of the soil during winter and spring every year in seasonal frost region. The frost penetration depth is most important factor in the design of structure such as road, railway and building in seasonal frost region. This paper presents the results of calculation of frost penetration depth and frost heaving in concrete track for railway construction. Model concrete track were installed near the railway track in Gangwon, Gyeonggi, Choongbuk province and frost penetration depth were measured using methylene blue frost penetration depth gauge. Model concrete track in Cheolwon, frost heaving of concrete track were also evaluated. The measure of maximum frost penetration depth and frost heaving can be applied to design railway track for cold region in Korea.

  • Many people have a growing interest on the health result from economic improvement, various environimental pollution and stress, and unrest on the adult diseases etc.In these result, demand for the herb medicine continues to expand. Farmers of theour country have a hardship in the farm management owing to of opening and liberaliza-tion, and make strenuous efforts on the devclopment of substitute crops to overcomethese differties. Government nowadays recommends the cultivation of the economiccrops like a flowers, medicinal herbs mushroom and clean vegetables. Medicinal herbsare specially profitable among these crops because herbs are possible to culture inwaste land, disused field and slope land, and owing to need less labor and competitionthan those of other crops. The most important problem is the facts that the compli-cation of currency structure of herb medicine inflicts mucll loss to cultivators. Therefore, this study was investigated the state of herb cultivation and the facts to be imploved in currency structure of the harvested herb medicine.1 . The cultivating area and output have been gradually increased and much produc-ted in Kyoungbuk, Kangwon, Choongbuk, Cheonbuk and Cheonnam province in or-der of cultivating area 2. Collection amount of wild herb medicine is decreasig bythe reason of the varous difficulties on the collection. 3. Cultivators of medicinal herbscan make agricultural management more resonable in information exchange on theherb cultivation, purchase of seed, fertilizer, chemicals and other materials, and sell-ing of harvested herb medicine by organization of cultivator fraternity. 4 Cultivatorshave to exclude intermediary margin by the development of direct transaction andcontract cultivation with medicinal herb store, drug manufacturer, chinese meicinehospital and trading firm etc. And also, by the performing exportation with foreign consumer.
