The results were summarized as follows : 1 In rural area of Chonnam province, the prevalence of Farmers' syndrome positive was 283 per 1,000 persons (203 in male, 355 in female). In urban area of Chonnam province, control area, the prevalence of Farmers' syndrome positive was 113 (72 in male, 145 in female). The prevalence of Farmers' syndrome positive in rural area was 2.5 times higher than that of urban area, and the prevalence in female was 1.7 times higher than that of male. The prevalence in total respondents was 256. 2. In rural area of Chonnam province, the age standardized prevalence of Farmers' syndrome positive was 209 per 1,000 persons (140 in male, 267 in female). In urban area of Chonnam province, control area, the age standardized prevalence of Farmers' syndrome positive was 122(79 in male, 158 in female). The age standardized prevalence in total respondents was 194. 3. The associated factors with Farmers' syndrome in univariate analysis were having illness during recent 15 days, age, sex, occupation, area, monthly income, education, medical security status, family size and duration of farming. 4. When applying multiple logistic regression for Farmers' syndrome, the significant variables were having illness during recent 15 days, area, sex, age, education, medical security status, family size and duration of farming.

  • Purpose : To establish reference doses of periapical radiography in Chonnam Province, Korea. Materials and Methods : The target-skin distances were measured for dental patient's 1235 exposures including 345 mandibular molar areas. Each periapical radiation exposure was simulated with exactly the same patients exposure parameters and the simulated radiation doses were measured utilizing Mult-O-Meter (Unfors Instruments, Billadal, Sweden). The measurements were done in 44 dental clinics with 49 dental x-ray sets in Chonnam Province for one or two weeks at each dental clinic during year 2006. Results : The third quartile patient surface doses were 2.8 mGy for overall periapical exposures and 3.2 mGy for periapical mandibular molar exposures. Conclusion : The third quartile patient surface doses in Chonnam Province can be used as a guide to accepted clinical practice to reduce patient radiation exposure for the surveyed reference doses were below the recommended dental periapical radiography dose of 7 mGy by IAEA.

  • A syntaxonomical study about the vegetation of ruined salt field in Chonnam province was carried out and its soil properties were also determined. This study was accomplished by the methods of Mueller-Dombois and Ellenberg. This study was designed to clarify the syntaxonomical and synecological characteristics of the vegetation of ruined salt field in Chonnam province. The annual herbaceous halophyte communities of ruined salt field in Chonnam province were consisted of 5 communities: Salicornia herbacea community, Sueada japonica community, Sueada maritima community, Atriplex gmelini community, Spergularia marina community. And the perennial herbaceous halophyte communities of ruined salt field in Chonnam province were consisted of 3 communities: Aster tripolium community, Carex scabrifolia community, Phragmites communis community. The subsidiary knowledges of this study will make it possible to accumulate information on the distribution pattern of coastal salt marsh vegetation, and also will provide practical information for conservation of coastal ecosystems.

  • An outbreak of duck septicemia caused by Pasteurella anatipestifer was studied in Chonnam province. The outbreaks of duck septicemia has become an economically important disease in duck farm. The present study undertaken to identify the etiological agent of duck septicemia and to evaluate the efficacy of bacterin against P anatipestifer in Chonnam province during period from May to December 1996. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The distribution of etiological agents from collected 328 duck samples were Pasteurella anatipestifer(57%), Escherichia coli(21%), duck viral hepatitis virus(4%), Salmonella sp(1%) and others (10%). 2. The agglutination titers of autogenous vaccine were increased after End vaccination and reached highest at 5-6 weeks post inoculation at the titers of 6.0-4.0.

  • This study aims to analyzed the acoustics characteristics of Korean Traditional Houses in Chonnam Province varied with lay out and floor plane to reflect the way of control for environmental condition. These houses are surveyed the reverberation time and level difference between rooms of the main living room and other main floored room, master room and kitchen. As a result, the reverberation time of traditional rooms are below 0.6 second, and the sound insulation performance of Korean traditional door are mostly very low grade with D-15. The level difference between rooms are low grade not to meet minimum class except between main living room and master room away from main living building.

  • Objective : The incidence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) worldwide varies considerably. In spite of many reports about the incidence of SAH, there has been no report about the incidence of SAH on the basis of the Korean population. The purpose of this hospital-based study was to assess the actual incidence rates of aneurysmal SAH in Gwangju city and Jeollanamdo province. Methods : All cases of SAH confirmed by computerized tomography (CT) between January 2007 and December 2007 were selected for analysis. For the data collection, three major training hospital and ten general hospitals working the CT in Gwangju city and four major general hospitals in Jeollanamdo province participate in this study. Results : According to the official census of Korea, the population was 1,413,444 in Gwangju city and 1.929,836 in Jeollanamdo province in 2007. There were 163 patients in Gwangju city and 266 patients in Jeollanamdo province confirmed SAH by CT in 2007. The crude and the age- and sex-adjusted annual incidence rates per 100,000 population for all ages in Gwangju city were 11.5 and 12.4 for aneurysmal SAH and in Jeollanamdo province were 13.8 and 10.8. The incidence was higher in women and increased with age. The gender distribution varied with age. At young ages. the incidence was higher in men while after the age of 40 years, the incidence was higher in women. Conclusion : In the present study, the age- and sex-adjusted annual incidence rates is 11.8 in Gwangju city and Jeollanamdo province. The incidence was higher in women and increased with age.

  • To isolate mutanse-producing bacteria, soil samples were collected from several areas in chonnam Province, South Korea. A total of 70 strains of actinomycetes were isolated from the soil samples. All isolated actinomycetes were inoculated on mutanase screening media to identify new bacterial strains producing mutanase activity. One strain in particular exhibited a strong mutanase-producing activity, and was identified as Microbispora rosea based on its morphological, cultural, and physiological characteristics, and also by 16S rDNA sequences.
