  • This study was carried out to investigate the seasonal occurrence and developmental periods of Rice stem maggot (RSM), Chlorops oryzae Matsumura, at laboratory and in the fields in $1980{\sim}1982$. RSM occurred three generations a year. Peak of the first, second, and third generation was middle to late May, early July and middle September. Longevity of the first generation adult averaged 18.9 days and the oviposition was 50 eggs per fly. The eggs, larval and pupal period was 7, 25, 14 days respectively.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the occurrence of rice insect pests related to different transplanting times and N-P-K-fertilizer levels of paddy field in Southern region of Korea. The population densities of brown planthopper (BPH: Nilaparvata lugens Stal), whitebacked planthopper (WBPH: Sogatella furcifera Horvath), small brown planthopper (SBPH: Laodelphax striatellus Fallen), green rice leafhopper (GRLH: Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler), rice stem maggot (RSM: Chlorops oryzae Matsumura), striped rice borer (SRB: Chilo suppressalis Walker), and rice leaffolder (RLF: Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenee) were affected more by transplanting time than the fertilizer levels. The later transplanting time induced the higher population densities of BPH, WBPH, SBPH, GRLH, RSM, whereas SRB and RLF were affected by earlier transplanting time in paddy field. The major pests except GRLH and SRB were increasingly induced by higher N-fertilizer level in the late transplanting.

  • Field studies on the damage type of rice plants by the rice stem maggot in the second generation were conducted at Yong-in, Gyonggi Province, in 1982. Rate of damaged ears and the number of punctured leaves were higher in Tongil line than Japonica line. Early heading cultivars usually had bottom-damaged ears and on the contrary late heading cultivars had upper?damaged ears. In Tongil line, many of the upper-damaged or middle-damaged ears had punctured-flag leaves and less first leaves with punctures, but most of the bottom-damaged ears had not punctured-leaves. When matured, the larvae moved up to the upper part of stem and pupated on the upper and inner part of leaf-sheath of flag or first leaves.

  • To establish a method for measuring varietal resistance against rice stem maggot in field and pot, 20 varieties were used in $1981{\sim}1983$. The degree of injured stems by the 1st generation larvae was significantly correlated with that of injured panicles by the 2nd ($r=0.864^{**}$). There was no ovipositional preference in rice stem maggot. The larval mortality after artificial infestation varied widly from 5.6 to 100% in varieties and that of the resistant varieties was high after boring. There was a negative correlation between number of injured leaves and larval mortality after artificial infestation ($'81:r=-0.833^{**},\;'82:r=-0.918^{**}$). It is considered that larval mortality mainly caused by antibiosis and larval mortality 20 days after infestation on rice seedlings is ideal for evaluating the varietal resistance to rice stem maggot. Resistant varieties are Nagdongbyeo, Jinjubyeo and Chucheongbyeo susceptible varieties, Keumgangbyeo, Milyang 23, Baigyangbyeo and Milyang 30.

  • A series of experiments were carried out to determine the effect of seed dressing application of chemicals on the early occurring rice insect pests. The number of small brown planthopper adults per 3hills in seed-dressing plot of Imidacloprid WS (Im WS) was 1.6 and its control efficacy was over 90%, compared with that of untreated plot. Rice water weevil was observed in the density of 8.8 larvae per 5 hills seed-dressed Im WS plots(showing 95.5% of control efficacy). Control efficacy of Im WS and Im GR against adult weevils lasted for 26 days after treatment and was higher than that of Carbofuran GR. Rates of injured stems by rice stem maggot and injured leaves by rice leaf miner were 3% and 3.7% in Im WS treatment plot respectively. Seed germination rate after seed dressing with recommended dosage (3 g/seed kg) of Im WS was 71 % on the 1st day and increased on 5th day up to that of untreated seed. The residual amount of Im in seed dressing plot was 0.11 ppm in rice roots and 0.05 ppm in leaves on the 40th day after treatment. Residual effect of Im WSI sustained for 50 days with over 95% insecticidal effect for the rice water weevil and over 90% for the brown planthopper. Quantity of the chemical applied in the field was calculated as 0.084 kg a.i./ha in seed dressing and 0.3 kg a.i./ha in seed box treatment, respectively It took 1 hour to treat insecticide by seed dressing, 2.5 hours by seed box applying, and 3.6 hours by water surface releasing per 990 $m^2$.
