Mustard Leaf Kimchi (MLK) is a traditional fermented Korean vegetable food. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of part vacuum treatment on MLK packed in a glass bottle during fermentation. There have been a few previous studies that examined the chemical and microbial changes during MLK fermentation. However, the major object of this study was to investigate the antioxidative activities of vacuum treated MLK. In this study, the antioxidative activity of vacuum treated mustard leaf Kimchi (VM) and control mustard leaf Kimchi (CM) were examined. VM and CM were fermented at $5^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks. A model system was designed to evaluate the antioxidative activity of crude chlorophylls and carotenoids (CCC) extracts from Mustard leaf Kimchi. The oxidative reaction of the linoleic acid mixture system at $30^{\circ}C$ in the dark was quantified determining the peroxide value and conjugated dienoic acid content. The effect of the CCC extracts on lipid peroxidation in a rat liver homogenate was examined. Formation of lipid peroxides was estimated by the TBA value, and the CCC extracts were found to inhibit the TBA value. Chlorophyll a and b, and carotenoids, Which are the major components in the CCC extracts of Kimchi were isolated on a DEAE-sepharose CL-6B and Sepharose CL-6B column and TLC. The effects of chlorophyll a and b, caroteins on linoleic acid autoxidation were measured by determining the peroxide value. In addition, their effects on free radical scavenging were investigated by DPPH. In this assay, chlorophyll a showed the greatest antioxidative activity followed by chlorophyll b, and carotenoids. MLK contains a sufficient content of chlorophyll a and b, and carotenoid which have strong antioxidative activities.
Since construction of the estuarine barrage at the mouth of the Nakdong River, eutrophication and increased abundance of phytoplankton have occurred mainly due to the increased retention time in the reach. However, during the spring, there is a decrease in chlorophyll-a, as a result of an increase in zooplankton number, which preys upon phytoplankton and affects the value of chlorophyll-a. In order to emphasize the importance of zooplankton data in water quality simulation, zooplankton community data were used to simulate water quality and eutrophication at Mulgeum located in 27 km upstream from the barrage. WASP 7.2 was used as the water quality model for the river, using a monthly data set from 2003 to 2005 for model calibration and verification. The results showed that chlorophyll-a, DO, and total nitrogen in the river were simulated well during the verification period. The results of water quality simulation using zooplankton community data in the model were better than those with phytoplankton death rate, in terms of the absolute value of percent bias, root mean square error, and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency. Those results indicate the use of zooplankton data provides more accurate simulation results for chlorophyll-a and eutrophication.
Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the effects of sannamul or herb extract addition to a soybean oil-in-water emulsion during photooxidation in the presence of chlorophyll. Methods: The emulsion mainly consisted of purified soybean oil and citric acid buffer (pH 4.0) at a weight ratio of 4 to 6, with chlorophyll a addition at 6 mg/kg. Ethanol extract of daraesoon, samnamul, basil, or peppermint was selectively added to the emulsion at 400 mg/kg, and emulsions in glass serum bottles were oxidized at $5^{\circ}C$ under 2,600 lux light for 48 hours. Lipid oxidation of the emulsions was evaluated based on determination of headspace oxygen content, peroxide value, and p-anisidine value. Pigments and antioxidants were also monitored. Results: The emulsion with added samnamul extract with high contents of polyphenols and low chlorophyll content showed lower oxygen consumption, peroxide values, and p-anisidine values, whereas basil and peppermint extracts with high chlorophyll contents increased photooxidation. Chlorophylls were degraded during photooxidation of the emulsions, and the degradation rate was highest in the emulsion with added samnamul extract. Conclusion: The high antioxidant activity of samnamul extract in the photooxidation of soybean oil-in-water emulsion could be due to low chlorophyll content, high concentrations of polyphenol compounds in the extract, as well as rapid degradation of chlorophylls during oxidation.
This research was conducted to estimate the chlorophyll contents of chrysanthemum leaves using SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter under different photoperiod and light intensity. Measurements were done at every third leaf intervals starting from the top of the stem to the bottom at harvest time. SPAD value was highest at 10 hours of photoperiods, followed by 13 and 16 hours of photoperiods. In particular, under short day condition, SPAD value was highest in the young leaves below the flower bud and decreased down the leaf profile. Under long day condition, SPAD value reached maximum at leaves between $15-27^{th}$ from the top and decreased to the minimum immediately below the flower bud (youngest leaf). These results may indicate that the younger leaves become strong source of supporting flowers in reproductive stage, while the younger leaves serve as sinks and older leaves support their development in vegetative stage. Changes of SPAD value at different levels of irradiance showed that highest SPAD value were observed at high irradiance and decreased with decreasing irradiance.
Three evergreen ground-cover species were tested and evaluated for cold acclimation with different lights in central Korea to enrich the varieties of ground cover plants for over-wintering. Nandina domestica which recently started to be planted in central Korea had high chlorophyll unit with shade condition in both locations, Banpo and Gwacheon during winter. Light condition had no influence on chlorophyll unit in Banpo after April, meanwhile full sun condition decreased chlorophyll unit significantly in Gwacheon, which is exposed to cold wind from north. Ophiopogon japonicas had more than double chlorophyll unit in shade condition compared to that in full light condition in both investigation areas in February. In addition, higher value of L and b in shade condition had been maintained than in full sun condition throughout investigation period. However, leaves in Gwacheon were de-colorized in full sun condition after over-wintering. Pachysandra terminalis had more higher chlorophyll unit in shade condition compared to in full sun condition in both investigation areas in February. But light conditions had not effect the difference of chlorophyll unit of Gwacheon in April. Therefore, The present results suggest that evergreen ground covers with shade condition would be used as landscape materials in the capital area.
Increasing global energy demand has resulted in an energy crisis. The dye sensitizer solar cell (DSSC) is an alternative source because of its ability to convert the sun's energy into electrical energy. Our aim was to determine the effect of synthesized Ni(II)-Chlorophyll for enhancing the efficiency of solar cells based DSSC. Complex compound Ni(II)-Chlorophyll was successfully synthesized as a dye sensitizer of $Ni(NO_3)_2.6H_2O$ and chlorophyll ligand with saponification method. Characterization results with spectrophotometer UV-Vis showed that the complex compounds of Ni(II)-Chlorophyll have a maximum wavelength of 295.00 nm, 451.00 and 665.00 nm. The bond between the ligand and metal appears in the vibration Ni-O at wave number $455.2cm^{-1}$. Complex compoun Ni(II)-Chlorophyll has a magnetic moment 7.10 Bohr Magneton (BM). The performance of complex compound Ni(II)-Chlorophyll as a dye sensitizer shows the value of short-circuit current (Jsc) at $3.00mA/cm^2$, open circuit voltage (Voc) at 0.15 V and the efficiency (${\eta}$) 0.20%.
To find diagnosing method of nitrogen status in tomato plant for determining optimum application rate of side dress, chlorophyll reading values were measured by portable chlorophyll meter(SPAD 502, Minolta), and compared with nitrogen supplying capability of soils. Regression between dry weight, amount of nitrogen uptake, and chlorophyll reading at stalk positions of tomato grown on the condition of no fertilization were evaluated For 6 green house soils with different nitrate concentrations ranged from $55mg\;kg^{-1}$ to $306mg\;kg^{-1}$. The chlorophyll reading of tomato leave was significantly correlated with amount of nitrogen per unit area of leave suggesting that chlorophyll content is useful for nitrogen diagnosis of tomato plant. The chlorophyll reading showed peak at the 15th leaf of stalk position on the 45th days after transplanting and this suggested that below or near the 15th leaf and before or near the 45th days after transplanting is the critical stalk position and time for diagnosing nitrogen status of tomato by chlorophyll test. The chlorophyll reading at the 14th leaf on the 40th days after transplanting was significantly correlated with soil nitrate status, dry weight and amount of nitrogen uptake by tomato grown with no fertilization. From the above correlation, the chlorophyll reading value of 57.1 at the 14th leaf of tomato was estimated as the critical level for maximum dry weight and amount of nitrogen uptake by tomato grown with no fertilization. Consequently, chlorophyll reading of tomato leaves measured by portable chlorophyll meter was thought to be available as a rapid plant test for predicting the nitrogen supplying capability of green house soils.

This study investigated the growth of native ferns under indoor light intensities to identify the introduction possibility as in-door ornamental plants. Three evergreen perennial fern species used in this experiment were Coniogramme japonica (Thunb.) Diels, Woodwardia japonica (L. f.) Sm., and Cyclosorus acuminatus (Houtt.) Nakai ex H. Itô. The light intensities were adjusted to 10, 50, 100 and 200 PPFD (µmol·m-2·s-1) based on the measurement of the various indoor light quantities. The experiment was conducted for a total of 8 weeks, and the light period (12/12h), temperature (25±1℃), and humidity (55±3%) were maintained during the experiment. The control plant group was grown in glass greenhouse for the same period. As the result of the study, in door C. japonica showed better growth under light intensities of 100, 200 PPFD. However, withering of the plants were observed under all light intensities except the control, which causes an ornamental value decrease. This seems to be related to the increase of DIo/RC value in chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. In the W. japonica growth data, the plant height was not significantly different from the control but, the leaf number decreased more than a two-fold. Also, the formed leaves turned brown and showed a poor growth and SPAD value at 200 PPFD had decreased significantly. Growth data of C. acuminatus was not significantly different with the control at all light intensities however, withering was observed at 100 and 200 PPFD. In chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, significant decrease in Pi_Abs and increase in DIo/RC value at 200 PPFD impose that stress caused by the intense light might be the reason of the withering of the plants.

Chamaecyparis obtusa is one of the economical conifers planted in Korea due to its good quality timber and wood characteristics. Individuals of C. obtusa containing high terpenes (HT) and low terpenes (LT) were selected for by colorimetric method. The HT of C. obtusa was delayed in wilting against various abiotic stresses compared to the LT plants. The HT group exposed to UV did not significant influence the chlorophyll content, and the chlorophyll value was higher in the HT group than the LT group. Also, chilling treatment (5℃) did not significant influence on the chlorophyll content. However treatment at -4℃ showed relatively low chlorophyll content in the LT group than the HT group. Plants exposure to high temperature was not a difference between the HT and the LT group. However, treatment at 38℃ influenced the chlorophyll content that was increased exposure time-dependently. In salt treatments, chlorophyll in the HT group was lower at high concentrations (300 and 500 mM) of NaCl. However, chlorophyll content increased to slightly in treatment time-dependently, which is 6.7% to 40%. H2O2 treatment has been a negative effect on the chlorophyll content in the HT group. All concentration of H2O2 decreased the chlorophyll content of 5% to 35%. Plants containing high terpenoids were resisted against some abiotic stress such as salt and H2O2. Our results implied that terpenoids could cause various abiotic stress resistance. These results could be utilized for efficient management and biomass production during forest silvicultures.
This experiment was conducted to obtain the basic information on the morphological and physiological changes in tobacco leaf during the growth period by measuring the changes of chlorophyll, sugar, lipid and mineral contents in tobacco plant. Leaf length and width have been fully developed at 25 days after leaf emergence. Dry weight was rapidly increased between 10 and 15 days after leaf emergence and reached the highest at 30 days. Crude lipid content, palmitic acid, and the major saturated fatty acid were increased with progressing senescence, while unsaturated fatty acid including linolenic acid was decreased as the senescence was advanced. The total nitrogen content showed the highest value at IS days after leaf emergence. On the other hand, the total sugar content showed the highest value at 45 days after leaf emergence and glucose, fructose and sucrose were decreased with leaf development and increased at the end of senescence. The content of chlorophyll showed the highest value at 15 days after leaf emergence and began to decrease at 30 days after leaf emergence. The contents of p, Cu, Zn, and Fe in tobacco leaves were decreased by the end of senescence after leaf emergence but those of Ca, Mg, and Mn in leaves were increased. Key words : Nicotiana tabacum chlorophyll, fatty acid, senescence.
