The aim of this study was to elucidate the anti-inflammatory activity of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) ethanolic extract fractions (CFEFs). Butanol fraction had the strongest antioxidant activity, and all CFEFs, except for chloroform fraction, partly inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitrite production in RAW 264.7 cells. In the cell-free system, hexane and butanol fractions chemically quenched nitric oxide (NO). In addition, the iNOS mRNA transcription was suppressed by ethanol extract and hexane fraction in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Taken together, the inhibitory effect of CFEFs on NO production from LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells, might be due to both the chemical NO quenching activity and the suppression of iNOS mRNA transcription partially. The synthesis of prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) was potently inhibited by ethanol extract to below basal label, and the transcription of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme involving in $PGE_2$ synthesis, was partially suppressed by ethanol extract and hexane fraction. Based on these results, CFEFs may be useful as an alternative medicine for the relief and retardation of immunological inflammatory responses through the reduction of inflammatory mediators, including NO and $PGE_2$ production.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the antioxidat and antimicrobial activities of the methanol extract and its fractions prepared from the roots of Sanguisorba officinalis L. Methods and Results: The antioxidant activities were compared by evaluating the DPPH radical and nitric oxide (NO) scavenging ability. Measurement of DPPH radical scavenging ability showed that the $SC_{50}$ values of the ethyl acetate fraction was $3.85{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. The ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the most effective DPPH radical scavenging ability compared with the other samples. As for the NO scavenging ability, at all tested concentrations, the ethyl acetate fraction showed a higher scavenging activity than that of the extract and other fractions. These results are related to the total phenolic compound and flavonoid contents of the ethyl acetate fraction. Antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogens was investigated using the disc diffusion assay. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest antimicrobial activity against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. However, the chloroform fraction had a higher antimicrobial activity against gram-negative Vibrio vulnificus than that of the extract and other fractions. Conclusions: The results show that the ethyl acetate fraction had a higher antioxidant as well as antimicrobial activity, than did the other samples. Therefore, the ethyl acetate fraction has potential application in the food industry.

This study aimed to determine the antioxidant and antibacterial effects of solvent extracts from Scutellaria baicalensis. The S. baicalensis was successively extracted with 5 kinds of solvents. The obtained samples were as follows; hexan fraction (IPK-1), chloroform fraction(IPK-2), ethyl acetate fraction(IPK-3), butanol fraction(IPK-4), and water fraction(IPK-5). These extracts were determined to process antibacterial effects using a paper disc method against 18 species of human pathogenic bacteria, antioxidant activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) method and inhibiting ability of linoleic acid autoxidation. Extracts of S. baicalensis has shown selective antibacterial effects on various strains of bacteria. Ethyl acetate fraction(IPK-3) showed the highest antimicrobial activity against selective bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus 285, S. aureus 503. In antioxidant activity test, free radical scavenger activity of IPK-3 fraction was 92% compared with BHA at the same concentration, while lipid peroxidation inhibition was 48%. These results suggest that IPK-3 fraction of S. baicalensis could be suitable in development of antimicrobial and antioxidant agents.
Antimicrobial activity of Plantain(Plantago asiatica L.) was investigated. Methanol extract of dried Plantain was fractionated to hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol and aqueous fraction. Ethylacetate fraction among these fractions showed the highest inhibitory effect on the microorganisms such as B. subtilis, E. coli, and V. parahaemolyticus at 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/disc. Ethylacetate fraction was further fractionated into 8 fractions by silica gel column and thin layer chromatography(TLC). The results showed that ethylacetate fractions No. 2 and 3 had the highest anti-microbial activity. They were mixed again, re-separated, and seven fractions were obtained. Among them, No.4 and 6 fraction had the highest inhibitory effect on the microorganisms, which were then separated into four fractions. In the 3rd fractionation, No.4 fraction was identified as hexadecanoic acid by HPLC, $^1$H-NMR and GC-MS.
The antibacterial activities of methanol extract and systematic solvent fractions( -hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and butanol) from Korean common type figs at different ripening stages were tested by the broth dilution method against 8 representative food-poisoning bacteria- : L. monocytogenes, S. aureus, S. enteritidis, E. coli O157:H7, E. coli, Y. enterocolitica, V. parahaemolyticus, and S. typhimurium. The methanol extracts of unripened I and II showed stronger activity than that of the ripened figs especially against L. monocytogenes, S. enteritidis, E. coli O157:H7, Y. parahaemolyticus and S. typhimurium in 10 mg/mL. The systematic solvent fractions showed stronger antibacterial activities than the methanol extract, even al the lower concentrations. The hexane fraction of ripened figs showed higher growth inhibition than those of unripened I and II against L. monocytogenes, E. coli O157:H7, Y. enterocolitica and V. parahaemolyticus. The chloroform fraction showed strong antibacterial activity in all ripening stages against E. coli O157:H7 and V. parahaemolyticus. The butanol fraction showed better inhibition activity in unripened I and II than in the ripened figs. The hexane and chloroform fractions showed inhibition activity of more than $75\%$ against E. coli O157:H7, V. parahaemolyticus in 0.5 mg/mL. Each fraction showed a little different antibacterial activity according to the ripening stages of the fruits and the tested strains. Especially, figs in the unripened II stage revealed superior activity relatively and the hexane and chloroform fractions revealed the strongest activity, followed by the butanol fraction, while the ethylacetate and water fractions hardly showed any activity.
A methanol extract of the roots of bupleurum longiradiatum (Umbelliferar) showed antiinflammatory activity in rats. Hexane, chloroform, butanol, and aqueous fractions from the methanol extract were tested with the result that only the hexane fraction exhibited positive activity. Fractionation of the hexane extract resulted in isolation of arborinone as an active principle.
Chromatographic separation of the hexane-soluble part and chloroform fraction from the fruits of Chaenomeles sinensis Koehne resulted in the isolation of compound 1 and 2, which were characterized as ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and oleanolic acid by chemical and spectral analysis, respectively.

Several extracts of different parts and solvent fractions of Cornus kousa were obtained and their functional material contents, antioxidant activities and tyrosinase inhibition effects were determined. Content of total polyphenols and flavonoids contents in flower were 169.638 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ and 25.418 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively, which were much higher than those of other parts. Also, flower extracts showed the strongest effects on DPPH and ABTS radicals scavenging and ferrous ion chelating. In flower, leaf, and stem extracts, inhibition effects on peroxidation of linoleic acid determined by ferric thiocyanate(FTC) method were higher than a synthetic antioxidant, BHT. Tyrosinase inhibition activities were shown only in flower extract. Flower and leaf extracts, showing high biological activities in various system, were successively reextracted with n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and n-butanol. Total polyphenol contents of water fractions were higher than any other solvent fractions in both flower and leaf, 67.006 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ and 67.739 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively. But total flavonoid contents were higher in ethyl acetate fraction for flower extract and butanol fraction for leaf extract. Among the solvent fractions, the highest efficiency of free radical scavenging activities was obtained in ethyl acetate fraction for flower extract and n-butanol fraction for leaf extract. Tyrosinase inhibition activities were higher in water fraction for both flower and leaf extracts, 49.24% and 31.8%, respectively.

This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activity on the dropwort (Oenanthe javanica) and its solvent fraction. The dropwort was extracted with 70% (v/v) ethanol, and then partitioned using the solvents of hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol, and aqueous. The ethyl acetate fraction contained the highest phenolic and flavonoid of 240.61 mg GA eq/g and 105.57 mg catechin eq/g, followed by ethanol extract of 37.50 mg GA eq/g and 26.50 mg catechin eq/g, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}$) on the solvent fractions increased in the order of ethyl acetate, butanol, ethanol extract, chloroform, aqueous, and hexane with 0.08, 0.58, 1.07, 2.43, 2.47, and 3.31 mg/mL, respectively. The ABTS radical scavenging activity was the highest value of 382 mg AA eq/g in ethyl acetate fraction. Reducing power and chelating effect on the ethanol extracts and its solvent fraction were in range of 0.23~0.75 and 0~32.01%, respectively. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}$) was the lowest value of $26.71\;{\mu}g$/mL in ethyl acetate fraction.
