Effects of film liners, ethylene scrubber, alcohol releaser and chlorine dioxide on the berry quality during simulated marketing in 'Campbell Early' grapes

  • This study investigated the effects of an ethylene scrubber (ES) with a micro-perforated polypropylene (MP-PP, 30 ㎛) or a high density polyethylene (MP-HDPE, 30 ㎛) film liner for the export carton packaging box in 'Campbell Early' grapes. Rachis browning was highest in the untreated group, followed by MP-PP and MP-HDPE for 14 days of simulated marketing at 20℃. The combination treatment of ES with the film liners showed a partial inhibition of the rachis browning regardless of the film liners. The effects of an alcohol releaser (AR) sachet or chlorine dioxide (CD) diffuser co-packaging were also investigated in the 'Campbell Early' grapes packed with the MP-HDPE (40 × 99 pin hole·m-2) film liner. The CD 1 g treatment showed a very limited weight loss of 1.1%, which was significantly lower than the 4.7% of the untreated control after 14 days of simulation marketing at 20℃. The berry shatter was 0.7% for the MP-HDPE + CD 1 g treatment and 1.8% for the MP-HDPE + CD 5 g treatment on the 10th day of the simulated marketing, which was significantly lower than the 8.9% of the control. The stem browning was significant suppressed until the 10th day of the simulated marketing. In particular, the CD 1 g treatment in combination with the MP-HDPE showed a low rachis and pedicel browning index of 2.0, which is 50% and 40% lower than that of the untreated control and the MP-HDPE single treatment, respectively. In addition, the CD 1 g treatment group showed a higher decay reduction effect than the CD 5 g treatment group, which caused high concentration damage.

  • One of the Musty and earthy smell compounds in raw water is generally attributed to 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB). It is well known that activated carbon and oxidants such as $O_3$, Cl $O_2$, are effective ways to control 2-MIB. In isotherm equilibrium experiments, 2-MIB in distilled water was much more adsorbed to the activated carbon(A/C) than raw water containing dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The Freundlich constants(k) of distilled water and raw water were 3.36 and 0.049, and 1/n values were 0.80 and 0.42, respectively. The 2-MIB residual rate were Y = $e^{-0}$.55x/~ $e^{-0}$.54x/ with Ozone( $O_3$) dose by 5 minutes contact time at the 241 and 353 ng/L initial concentrations. The 2-MIB residual rate were Y = $e^{-0}$.32x/~ $e^{-0}$.35x/ with Chlorine dioxide(Cl $O_2$) dose by 15 minutes contact time at the 89 and 249 ng/L initial concentrations. 2-MIB was decreased from 1911 ng/L to 569ng/L by post-ozonation(70%removal efficiency) and removal efficiencies of 2-MIB by the following 4 kinds Granular Activated Carbon(GAC) process such as coal base, coconut base, wood base and zeolite+carbon base were 95.8, 89.5, 88.4, and 93.7% respectively.ely.

  • 수확 후 블루베리, 복분자, 오디의 냉동 전처리 조건 및 미생물학적 안전성 확립을 위한 최적 세척조건을 연구하였다. 사용된 세척처리 중에서 50 ppm 이산화염소수와 0.1% 푸마르산의 병합처리가 대조구와 비교 시, 블루베리, 복분자, 오디의 총 호기성 세균에 있어서 2.56, 2.26, 2.56 log CFU/g을 감균시켜서 가장 효과가 높았다. 또한 병합처리는 효모 및 곰팡이 수에서도 2.24, 2.08, 1.49 log CFU/g 감소시켰다. 따라서 본 연구결과 블루베리, 복분자, 오디의 냉동 전처리 조건으로써 50 ppm 이산화염소수와 0.1% 푸마르산 세척 병합 처리가 냉동 베리류의 미생물학적 안전성 확보를 위한 가장 좋은 전처리 방법이라고 판단된다.

서방형 이산화염소 가스 젤팩을 이용한 딸기저장 중 주요 성분 및 항산화 활성의 변화 (Changes in th Chemical Components and Antioxidant Activity of Strawberry by Slow-released ClO2 Gas Gel-Pack during Storage)

  • To increase the shelf-life of strawberry, samples were treated with two gel packs containing slow-released chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) gas at 3~5 ppm for 6 days at room temperature and the changes in the major chemical components (ascorbic acid, polyphenols, flavonoids and anthocyanin) contents and antioxidative activities (DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging and metal chelating activity) were investigated. The content of ascorbic acid of control was 40.38 mg% and contained 35.67~44.75 mg% during 6 days. There was no tendency to increase or decrease during storage period. The contents of ascorbic acid of control and 3~5 ppm $ClO_2$ gas treated samples were not significantly different during storage period. The content of polyphenol compounds of initial stage was 111.23 mg% and contained 117.78~132.40 mg% during 6 days. The contents of polyphenol compounds of 3~5 ppm $ClO_2$ gas treated samples were 103.51~130.25 mg%. There were no significant different between them during storage. The flavonoids and anthocyanin contents were not different from the control during storage period regardless of 3~5 ppm $ClO_2$ gas treatment. Furthermore, antioxidative activities were not different among the control and $ClO_2$ gas treatments during storage.

  • To improve the shelf-life of Centella asiatica, Centella asiatica was treated with gel packs containing slow-released chlorine dioxide (ClO2) gas at 3-5 ppm for 20 days at 4℃. The weight loss rate, as well as the changes in pH, color, and texture of the treated samples, were investigated. The weight of the control and ClO2 gas-treated samples was decreased during the storage period. The change in weight of the control was slightly faster than that of the samples treated with 3 and 4 ppm ClO2 gas. The pH of the control and the ClO2 gas treated samples were decreased during the storage period and there was no significant difference between the control and ClO2 gas treated samples. Concerning color (lightness, redness, and yellowness) changes of Centella asiatica during the storage period, there was no significant difference between the control and ClO2 gas treated samples. The change in shear force in the leaf and stem of Centella asiatica during the storage period was slightly lower in the 4 ppm ClO2 gas treated samples (in the leaf) compared to the control and 3 and 4 ppm ClO2 gas treated samples (in the stem) compared to the control and 5 ppm ClO2 gas treated sample.

소석회와 CO2를 이용한 상수관로의 부식제어(II) - 관종별 부식특성 평가 (Corrosion Control in Water Distribution System using Lime and Carbon Dioxide(II) - Evaluation on the Characteristics of Corrosion as a Function of Pipe Material)

  • The pH & alkalinity adjustment method by lime and carbon dioxide($CO_2$) for corrosion control in water distribution system was investigated to evaluate the corrosion characteristics of metal pipes, such as galvanized iron, copper, stainless steel, and carbon steel. When the pH in sand filtered and ozone+GAC treated water was increased with lime and $CO_2$ from 7.5 to 8.0, the concentration of residual chlorine decreased at higher pH and longer reaction time; the concentration of trihalomethane increased. The corrosion rate of coupons with corrosion control using lime and carbon dioxide was showed much smaller than those without corrosion control using pilot-scale simulated distribution system. The galvanized iron was corroded much faster than carbon steel, copper, and stainless steel. Especially, copper and stainless steel coupons were hardly corroded. The galvanized iron and carbon steel coupons with corrosion control were produced the corrosion products less than those without corrosion control by the results of environmental scanning electron microscope(ESEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDS) analyses. The galvanized iron coupon with pH and alkalinity adjustment by lime and carbon dioxide was detected about 30 percent of zinc, when the carbon steel was detected about 30 percent of calcium by calcium carbonate products formation. For the results of X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses, the goethite(${\alpha}$-FeOOH) was identified as primary corrosion product of galvanized iron without corrosion control, while the Zinc oxide(ZnO) was found on corrosion products of galvanized iron coupon with corrosion control as the results of EDS analyses. However, the carbon steel corrosion products regardless of corrosion control were composed predominantly of maghemite(${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$) and hematite(${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$).

  • The demand of packaged baby leaves has been increased for its convenient use as fresh-cut produce. This investigation was aimed to explore the effects of different sanitizers on the quality parameters of 'Tah Tasai' Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var. narinosa) baby leaves. Thirteen days old baby leaves were harvested and washed in tap water (TW), 100 ppm chlorine solution (Cl), 2 ppm ozonated water ($O_3$), 15 ppm chlorine dioxide solution ($ClO_2$) and washing with 0.2% citric acid solution followed by 50% ethanol spray (CA+Et). The samples were then packaged in 50 ${\mu}m$ polyethylene bags and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. Off-odor of packaged baby leaves was not detected during storage. There was no significant difference in color parameters among the treatments. Samples treated with $O_3$ showed substantially higher electrolyte leakage throughout the storage. This treatment also rendered a higher accumulation of $CO_2$ in the packages. Samples treated with Cl and CA+Et maintained good overall visual quality with higher scores compared to that of $O_3$ and $ClO_2$. Although Cl treatment showed lower number of total aerobic count at the beginning of storage, citric acid in combination with ethanol treatment was more effective until the end of storage. The combined treatment also showed comparatively lower coliform plate count. This result indicates that citric acid wash followed by ethanol spray could be an alternative to chlorine for environment friendly sanitization of baby leaves.

서방형 이산화염소 가스를 이용한 이슬송이버섯의 저장 중 품질 변화 (Quality Changes of Lentinula edodes GNA01 Mushroom by Choline Dioxide Gas Treatment during Storage)

  • To improve the shelf-life of mushrooms, Lentinula edodes GNA01 mushrooms were treated with gel packs containing slow-released chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) gas at 5~10 ppm for 5 days at $20^{\circ}C$ and the weight loss rate as well as the changes in pH, color and texture properties of the treated samples were investigated. The weight of the control and $ClO_2$ gas treated samples were decreased slightly, and there were no differences during the storage period. However, the weight of the control changed faster than those of the $ClO_2$ gas treated samples during storage period. The pH in the control and in the $ClO_2$ gas treated samples were decreased during storage period, but the samples treated with 5 and 7 ppm $ClO_2$ gas were the least changed. On the other hand, the samples treated with 10 ppm $ClO_2$ gas showed no difference from the other treatments during 4 days, but the pH was lower than that of the control on the fifth day. The lightness of inside and outside in mushroom were decreased whereas redness and yellowness were increased during storage period. However, color changes in the $ClO_2$ gas treated samples were lower than those of the control. Especially, the samples treated with 5 and 7 ppm $ClO_2$ gas were the least changed. The texture of the mushroom were decreased consistently during storage period. The texture of the control changed faster than those of the $ClO_2$ gas treatments during 5 days. Especially, the samples treated 5 ppm $ClO_2$ gas were the least changed.

Control Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella by gas treatment

  • The Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, is one of the most important pests of stored food in the food processing industry worldwide. To control the Indian meal moth, methyl bromide, phosphine, high carbon dioxide, sulfuryl fluoride and plant essential oil fumigation have been considered. However, these treatments have disadvantages. For example, depleting the ozone layer, showing resistance in insect, low control efficacy or need high cost for treatment. Chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) is strong disinfectant and insecticide. The gas caused a malfunction in enzymes. The oxidative stress induced by $ClO_2$ gas treatment damaged to a physiological system and all life stages of P. interpunctella. The gaseous $ClO_2$ is a convincing alternative to methyl bromide for controlling P. interpunctella. The gaseous $ClO_2$ was generated by a chlorine dioxide generator (PurgoFarm Co., Ltd., Hwasung, Korea). It generated highly pure $ClO_2$ gas and the gas blown out through a vent into a test chamber. Gas entry to the chamber was automatically controlled and monitored by a PortaSene II gas leak detector (Analytical Technology, Collegeville, PA, USA). The properly prepared eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults of P. interpunctella were used in this experiment. Data were analyzed using SAS 9.4. Percentage data were statistically analyzed after arcsine-root transformation. Analysis of variance was performed using general linear model, and means were separated by the least significant difference test at P < 0.05. Fumigation is an effective management technique for controlling all stages of P. interpunctella. We found that $ClO_2$ gas treatment directly effects on egg, larvae, pupae and adults of P. interpunctella. The gas treatment with proper concentration for over a day achieved 100 % mortality in all stages of P. interpunctella and short time treatment or low concentration gas treatment results showed that the egg hatchability, pupation rate, and adult emergency rate were lowered compare with untreated control. Also, abnormal pupae or adult rate were increased. Gaseous $ClO_2$ treatment induced insecticidal reactive oxygen species (ROS), and it resulted in fatal oxidative stress in P. interpunctella. Taken together, these results showed that exposure proper concentration and time of the gas control all stages of P. interpunctella by inducing fatal oxidative stress. Further studies will be required to apply the gas treatment under real-world condition and to understanding physiological reaction in P. interpunctella caused by oxidative stress.

펄프 표백시 산소와 이산화염소의 영향 - 수산기 라디칼의 생성과 금속이온의 영향- (The Effect of Oxygen and Chlorine Dioxide during Pulp Bleaching - The Effect of Hydroxyl Radical and Metal Ion -)

  • 본 논문에서는 케미루민센스와 HPLC를 사용하여 산소 표백시 수산기 라디칼의 생성과 리그닌 및 탄수화물의 분해와의 상호관련성을 밝히기 위하여 간단한 리그닌 모델화합물인 아포사이놀과 탄수화물 모델화합물인 $\alpha$-D-glucopyranose와 methyl-$\beta$-D-glucopyronoside를 사용하여 연구하였다. 또한 수산기 라디칼의 생성과 금속이온과의 연관성을 검토하고 탈리그닌을 촉진함과 동시에 탄수화물의 분해를 억제하는 최적의 금속이온 농도를 조사하였다. 그 결과 금속이온의 존재가 수산기 라디칼의 형성과 탈리그닌화에 효과적인 영향을 주며, $Cu^{2+}$ > $Mn^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $Fe^{2+}$의 순서로 수산기 라디칼이 생성됨을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 금속이온들은 탄수화물도 분해시키는 문제가 있음을 증명하였다. 그러나 $100{\mu}m\;Mg^{2+}$를 첨가하면 수산기 라디칼의 생성이 억제됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한 $Cu^{2+}$은 탄수화물의 안정성에 나쁜 영향을 미쳤으나, $3{\mu}m\;Mn^{2+}$을 첨가하면 놀랍게도 methyl-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside에 대해 약간의 보호효과를 나타냄을 알 수 있었다. 이산화염소 라디칼 표백 용액 중에서는 이와 반대로 금속과 관계없이 상당한 양의 수산기 라디칼을 생성하지 않으나 이산화염소 자체의 라디칼이 리그닌만을 선택적으로 분해하였다.
