To obtain the information of low chlorine leaf production, the chlorine content of the soil and cured leaf in Burley tobacco growing area was investigated. The results obtained are as follows. 1. The chlorine concentration in soil at transplanting time in Kwang-ju growing area was higher than in Jeon-ju(1983), and paddy field sell showed higher concentration of chlorine than upland field in Jeon-ju(1984). The chlorine concentration in soil was different between years, locations, and cultivated land (paddy field and upland field), but the concentration, on the whole, was under the levels that might effect the leaf quality. 2. The chlorine concentration In soil was highest around todays after transplanting, and after harvesting, the concentration decreased to half of transplanting time. 3. The distribution of chlorine through the parts of tobacco plant showed remarkable difference between years, locations, cultivated land and growing stages. 4. There was significant positive correlation between chlorine concentration in top soil and chlorine content of cured leaf. 5. Chlorine content of cured leaf in Kwang-ju area(1.79%) was higher than that of Jeon-ju area(O.79%), relatively. 6. It was considered that the accumulation of salt from the sea by sea. wind did not main factor of high leaf chlorine content in seaside district.
Electrolysis produces hypochlorous acid by using a small quantity of NaCl as electrolyte. This process maximizes the stabilization of drinking water through the control of chlorine residual concentration. This study investigated free chlorine generation by an electrolytic method using $Ti/IrO_2$ and stainless steel. The generation of free chlorine was increased with increasing hydraulic retention time, voltage, chlorine ion concentration and the number of electrodes. However, the change of pH did not affect the generation of free chlorine. There was no significant difference on the behavior of chlorine concentration between electrolytic method and NaOCl injection. In this study, the concentration of free chlorine predicted model based on power functional model was developed various under conditions. Electrolysis free chlorine generation model can be effective tool in the estimation of free chlorine generation.
The chlorine's residual concentration prevents the regrowth of microorganism in water transport along the pipeline system. Precise prediction of chlorine concentration is important in determining disinfectant injection for the water distribution system. In this study, a pilot scale water distribution system was designed and fabricated to measure the temporal variation of chlorine concentration for three flow conditions (V = 0.88, 1.33, 1.95 m/s). Various kinetic models were applied to identify the relationship between hydraulic condition and chlorine decay. Genetic Algorithm (GA) was integrated into five kinetic models and time series of chlorine were used to calibrate parameters. Model fitness was compared by Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) between measurement and prediction. Limited first order model and Parallel first order showed good fitness for prediction of chlorine concentration.
Chlorination of wastewater is recently practiced in Korea. While many researchers have studied the kinetics of aqueous chlorine(HOCl) with nitrogeneous compounds and other organic/inorganic contaminants in drinking water, the researches of wastewater chlorination are relatively few. The purpose of this study was to investigate the chlorine decay kinetics and parameters on wastewater chlorination. Chlorine decay rate increased with increasing initial chlorine concentration. The parameters affecting chlorine decay rate were different in each wastewater treatment plant. One of the most important parameters affecting chlorine decay was initial chlorine concentration, and other parameters such as $NH_3-N$, total coliform, $UV_{254}$ and Fe were also affected. The decay ratio of chlorine was decreased with increasing initial chlorine concentration, and the disinfection efficiency showed good correlation with the decay ratio.
This study developed prediction models of chlorine bulk decay coefficient by each condition of water quality, measuring chlorine bulk decay coefficients of the water and water quality by water purification processes. The second-reaction order of chlorine were selected as the optimal reaction order of research area because the decay of chlorine was best represented. Chlorine bulk decay coefficients of the water in conventional processes, advanced processes before rechlorination was respectively $5.9072(mg/L)^{-1}d^{-1}$ and $3.3974(mg/L)^{-1}d^{-1}$, and $1.2522(mg/L)^{-1}d^{-1}$ and $1.1998(mg/L)^{-1}d^{-1}$ after rechlorination. As a result, the reduction of organic material concentration during the retention time has greatly changed the chlorine bulk decay coefficient. All the coefficients of determination were higher than 0.8 in the developed models of the chlorine bulk decay coefficient, considering the drawn chlorine bulk decay coefficient and several parameters of water quality and statistically significant. Thus, it was judged that models that could express the actual values, properly were developed. In the meantime, the chlorine bulk decay coefficient was in proportion to the initial residual chlorine concentration and the concentration of rechlorination; however, it may greatly vary depending on rechlorination. Thus, it is judged that it is necessary to set a plan for the management of residual chlorine concentration after experimentally assessing this change, utilizing the methodology proposed in this study in the actual fields. The prediction models in this study would simulate the reduction of residual chlorine concentration according to the conditions of the operation of water purification plants and the introduction of rechlorination facilities, more reasonably considering water purification process and the time of chlorination. In addition, utilizing the prediction models, the reduction of residual chlorine concentration in the supply areas can be predicted, and it is judged that this can be utilized in setting plans for the management of residual chlorine concentration.
Maintaining adequate residual chlorine concentration is an important criteria to provide secure drinking water. The chlorine decay can be influenced by unstable flow due to the transient event caused by operation of hydraulic devices in the pipeline system. In order to understand the relationship between the transient event and the chlorine decay, the probability density function based on the water demand curve of a hypothetical water distribution system was used. The irregular transient events and the same number of events with regular interval were assumed and the fate of chlorine decay was compared. The chlorine decay was modeled using a generic chlorine decay model with optimized parameters to minimize the root mean square error between the experimental chlorine concentration and the simulated chlorine concentration using genetic algorithm. As a result, the chlorine decay can be determined through the number of transients regardless of the occurrence intervals.
Chlorine has strong oxidizing power, also it is many advantages over other disinfectants such as the residual characteristic and economic feasibility. However, chlorine also has disadvantages such as creating disinfection by-products of chlorine as THMs. In particular, the most deadly disadvantage of chlorine is that it is extremely poisonous toxins about all alive lives. Disinfection with electrolysis water can be a very useful way Because you do not have to worry about chlorine's dangerous. In this study, we evaluated the potential as a disinfectant, across the evaluating disinfection effect and generating characteristic of by-products. The electrolyzed water could be obtained removal efficiencies of over 99.9 % the coliform by operating condition such as residence time, current density (voltage), the electrode gap. The residual chlorine be generated 10,000 mg/L in current density $1.0A/dm^2$ and residence time of 10 minutes. The residual chlorine concentration was possible to maintain a stable. The by-products generated by high concentration residual chlorine in the reactor such as trihalomethanes, haloaceticacid, chloralhydrate, haloacetonitrile were detected in less than a water quality standards. At the concentration of less than residual chlorine of 1 ppm, the chlorine disinfection by-products be generated most below the detection limit.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the formation of trihalomethanes(THMs) and to compare the concentration level of THMs of swimming pools water by different disinfection methods such as chlorine, ozone-chlorine, and salt brine electrolysis generator (SBEG). The concentration of chloroform was the highest in the chlorine system, and the SBEG was the highest in the production of bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM) and bromoform. The average concentration of total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) in three disinfection systems were $64.5{\pm}27.4mg/l(SBEG),\;43.8{\pm}22.3mg/l(chlorine)$, and $30.6{\pm}16.1mg/l(ozone-chlorine)$, respectively. In chlorine and ozone-chlorine disinfection system, chloroform concentration was highest, followed by BDCN, then DBCM. In the SBEG, TTHMs was composed of 42% of chloroform, 28.9% of bromoform, 15.1% of BDCM and 14% of DBCM, respectively. The strongest correlation was obtained in the levels of chloroform and TTHMs in chlorine, and ozone-chlorine disinfection systems from both indoor and outdoor swimming pools ($r=0.989{\sim}0.999$, p<0.01). In the SBEG, the levels of BDCM and TTHMs showed a good correlation (r=0.913, p<0.01). In chlorine and ozone-chlorine disinfection systems at indoor swimming pools, pH, TOC and $KMnO_4$ consumption showed strong correlation with chloroform and TTHMs concentrations (p<0.01). In the SBEG, pH and TOC were also strongly correlated with chloroform (p<0.01). pH and TTHMs were correlated as well (p<0.05).
The residual chlorine concentration is an essential factor to secure reliable water quality in the water distribution systems. The chlorine concentration decays along the pipeline system and the main processes of the reaction can be divided into the bulk decay and the wall decay mechanisms. Using EPANET 2.0, it is possible to predict the chlorine decay through bulk decay and wall decay based on the pipeline geometry and the hydraulic analysis of the water distribution system. In this study, we tried to verify the predictability of EPANET 2.0 using data collected from experimental practices. We performed chlorine concentration measurement according to various Reynolds numbers in a pilot-scale water distribution system. The chlorine concentration was predicted using both bulk decay model and wall decay model. As a result of the comparison between experimental data and simulated data, the performance of the limited $1^{st}$-order model was found to the best in the bulk decay model. The wall decay model simulated the initial decay well, but the overall chlorine decay cannot be properly predicted. Simulation also indicated that as the Reynolds number increased, the impact of the wall.
Indirect oxidation using chlorine species oxidizing agents is often effective in wastewater treatment using an electrochemical oxidation process. When chlorine ions are contained in the wastewater, oxidizing agents of various chlorine species are produced during electrolysis. In a ballast water management system, it is also used to treat ballast water by electrolyzing seawater to produce a chlorine species oxidizer. However, ballast water in the brackish zone and some wastewater has a low chlorine ion concentration. Therefore, it is necessary to study the chlorine generation current efficiency at various chlorine concentration conditions. In this study, the chlorine generating current efficiency of a boron-doped diamond(BDD) electrode and insoluble electrodes are compared with various chloride ion concentrations. The results of this study show that the current efficiency of the BDD electrode is better than that of the insoluble electrodes. The chlorine generation current efficiency is better in the order of BDD, MMO(mixed metal oxide), $Ti/RuO_2$, and $Ti/IrO_2$ electrodes. In particular, when the concentration of sodium chloride is 10 g/L or less, the current efficiency of the BDD electrode is excellent.
