In marine and coastal environments, penetration of chloride ions is one of the main mechanisms causing concrete reinforcement corrosion. Currently, most of experimental investigations about submerged penetration of chloride ions are started after the four weeks standard curing of concrete. The further hydration of cement and reduction of chloride diffusivity during submerged penetration period are ignored. To overcome this weak point, this paper presents a numerical procedure to analyze simultaneously cement hydration reaction and chloride ion penetration process. First, using a cement hydration model, degree of hydration and phase volume fractions of hardening concrete are determined. Second, the dependences of chloride diffusivity and chloride binding capacity on age of concrete are clarified. Third, chloride profiles in hardening concrete are calculated. The proposed numerical procedure is verified by using chloride penetration test results of concrete with different mixing proportions.

There are two types of chloride in concrete; one is added as concrete materials' chloride when concrete's mixing, and .the other is penetrated from the air and sea water in the sea-shore area. These chlorides penetrate into concrete, and they are accumulated inside the concrete with aging. This study aimed to evaluate the chloride ion penetration resistance of concrete containing GGBFS in the sea-shore area. Therefore, the specimens made with the replacement ratios(0, 0.30, 0.45, 0.60) of GGBFS were put into 3% NaCl solution according to the chloride accelerating test of JCI-SC3, and then investigated the weight changes, compressive strength, chloride ion with the depths of the specimens by aging. The result is that the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion is decreased with the increase of replacement ratios when compared to OPC
Evaluation of chloride penetration is very important, because induced chloride ion causes corrosion in embedded steel. Diffusion coefficient obtained from rapid chloride penetration test is currently used, however this method cannot provide a correct prediction of chloride content since it shows only ion migration velocity in electrical field. Apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion based on simple Fick's Law can provide a total chloride penetration magnitude to engineers. This study proposes an analysis technique to predict chloride penetration using apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion from neural network (NN) algorithm and time-dependent diffusion phenomena. For this work, thirty mix proportions with the related diffusion coefficients are studied. The components of mix proportions such as w/b ratio, unit content of cement, slag, fly ash, silica fume, and fine/coarse aggregate are selected as neurons, then learning for apparent diffusion coefficient is trained. Considering time-dependent diffusion coefficient based on Fick's Law, the technique for chloride penetration analysis is proposed. The applicability of the technique is verified through test results from short, long term submerged test, and field investigations. The proposed technique can be improved through NN learning-training based on the acquisition of various mix proportions and the related diffusion coefficients of chloride ion.
The chloride penetration model, which considers diffusion and sorption, is proposed. The FEM program developed on the basis of the diffusion and sorption model provides the estimation of chloride concentration variation according to cyclic humidity and temperature. The humidity diffusion analysis is carried out, and the chloride ion diffusion and sorption analysis are conducted on the basis of the pre-estimated humidity data in each element. Each element has different variables at different ages and locations in analysis. At early ages, the difference of relative humidity between inner and outer concretes causes the chloride ion penetration by sorption. As the humidity diffusion reduces the difference of relative humidity between inner md outer concretes with age, the effect of sorption on the chloride ion penetration decreases with age. The cyclic humidity increases the effect of sorption on the chloride ion penetration at early ages, and increases the quantity of chloride ion around steel at later ages. Therefore, the in-situ analysis of chloride ion Penetration for harbor concrete structures must be Performed considering the cyclic humidity conditionandthelongtermsorption.
Chloride ion inside concrete destroys the so-called passive film surrounding reinforcing bars inside concrete so that the so-called salt attack accelerates corrosion which is the most critical factor for durability as well as structural safety of reinforced concrete structures. Recently, as a solution of the salt attack, the ground granulated blast-furnace slag(GGBFS) have been used as binder or blended cement more extensively. In this paper, characteristics of chloride ion diffusion for the GGBFS concrete, which is known to possess better resistance to damage due to the chloride ion penetration than ordinary portland cement(OPC) concrete possesses, are analyzed and a chloride ion diffusion model for the GGBFS concrete is proposed by modifying an existing diffusion model for the OPC concrete. The proposed model is verified by comparing diffusion analysis results using the model accelerated chloride penetration test results for concrete specimens as well as field test results for an RC bridge pier. Then, an optimal resistance condition to chloride penetration for the GGBFS concrete is obtained according to degrees of fineness and replacement ratios of the GGBFS concrete. The result shows that the GGBFS concrete has better resistance to chloride ion penetration than OPC concrete has and the resistance is more affected by the replacement ratio than the degree of fineness of the GGBFS.

Recently, the corrosion of concrete structures has received great attention related with the deterioration of sea-side structures, such as new airport, bridges, and nuclear power plants. In this regards, many studies have been done on the chloride attack in concrete structures. However, those studies were confined mostly to the single deterioration due to chloride only, although actual environment is rather of combined type. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to explore the influences of carbonation and freezing-thawing action to chloride attack in concrete structures. The test results indicate that the chloride penetration is more pronounced than the case of single chloride attack when the carbonation process is combined with the chloride attack. It is supposed that the chloride ion concentration of carbonation region is higher than the sound region because of the separation of fixed salts. Though the use of fly ash pronounces the chloride ion concentration in surface, amounts of chloride ion penetration into deep region decreases with the use of fly ash. The small reduction of relative dynamic elastic modulus induced from freezing-thawing increases the chloride ion penetration depths much. The present study allows more realistic assessment of durability for such concrete structures which are subjected to combined attacks of both chlorides and carbonation or freezing-thawing but the future studies for combined environment will assure the precise assessment.

The Marine concrete that located at immersion zone receives an hydrostatic pressure of 1 atm as depth of the water increased by 10 m. And it could accelerate chloride ion penetration. In this study, to evaluate the influence of hydrostatic pressure on chloride ion penetration, concrete mixed by ordinary Portland cement and Portland blast-furnace slag cement was exposed to 1 and 6 atm and substitute ocean water. As a result, the surface chloride ion concentration of the concrete under 6 atm of hydrostatic pressure increased rapidly and the water-soluble chloride ion contents was increased by depth. In addition, the concrete under 6 atm of hydrostatic pressure showed the increase of capillary pores corresponding to 5~100 nm.
In this research, it was examined chloride ion penetration resistance of slag-replaced concrete and cementless slag concrete considering marine environmental exposure conditions of splash zone, tidal zone and immersion zone. In the design strength of grade 24 MPa, the specimens were tested to determine their compressive strength, scanning electron microscopy images and chloride migration coefficient. Further, chloride ion penetration depth and carbonation depth of specimens exposed to marine environment were measured. Experimental results confirm that chloride migration coefficient of specimens tended to decrease with increasing the replacement ratio of ground granulated blast-furnace slag in accelerated laboratory test. In addition, the specimens exposed to the tidal zone were found to be the greatest chloride ion penetration depth compared to splash zone and immersion zone. On the other hand, the chloride ion penetration depth of the specimens exposed to splash zone tended to increase with increasing the replacement ratio of ground granulated blast-furnace slag in contrast with the results for the tidal zone and immersion zone.
To improve the chloride ingress resistance of concrete, slag is widely used as a mineral admixture in concrete industry. And currently, most of experimental investigations about non steady state diffusion tests of chloride penetration are started after four weeks standard curing of concrete. For slag blended concrete, during submerged chloride penetration tests periods, binder reaction proceeds continuously, and chloride diffusivity decreases. However, so far the dependence of chloride ingress on curing ages are not detailed considered. To address this disadvantage, this paper shows a numerical procedure to analyze simultaneously binder hydration reactions and chloride ion penetration process. First, using a slag blended cement hydration model, degree of reactions of binders, combined water, and capillary porosity of hardening blended concrete are determined. Second, the dependences of chloride diffusivity on capillary porosity of slag blended concrete are clarified. Third, by considering time dependent chloride diffusivity and surface chloride content, chloride penetration profiles in hardening concrete are calculated. The proposed prediction model is verified through chloride immersion penetration test results of concrete with different water to binder ratios and slag contents.

Crack is a penetration path of harmful material such as chloride ion, and causes a serious deterioration in durability. So, the characteristics of chloride penetration are investigated for the cracked flexural concrete members using high-durable materials. For these, the flexural crack of beam specimen is introduced by transverse loading. And, Rapid Chloride Penetration Test (RCPT) and Long-term chloride penetration test are carried out to compare the chloride penetration depth. From test results when crack is happened, the chloride penetration resistance of the durable member was superior than that of the normal member. Blast furnace slag concrete member has a excellent chloride penetration resistance in long-term chloride penetration test.
