  • In this paper, when we use the chirp signal as input signal of ultrasonic signal system the technique for determining the bandwidth of the chirp signal that maximizes the amplitude of the compressed ultrasonic echo signal has been studied. In ultrasonic signal processing systems, the signal-to-noise ratio of the echo signal can be too low due to damping and scattering of the ultrasonic wave during transmission. Method of pulse compression using chirp signal is a means to increase the signal-to-noise ratio in ultrasonic pulse-echo systems. Simulation and experimental results showed that the output signal of ultrasonic system was increased by pulse width of chirp signal and the optimum-bandwidth of the chirp signal was 1.15 times larger than the bandwidth of the ultrasonic system.

  • There are range and azimuth direction resolution of synthetic aperture radar on the aircraft or satellite. Wide bandwidth chirp pulse generation technology is prerequisite for SAR image with fine resolution. There are two kinds of digital chirp pulse generation technology as arbitrary waveform generator(AWG) and direct digital synthesizer(DDS). In this paper, we design and implement a digital chirp pulse generator to generate 300MHz wide bandwidth linear FM chirp pulse for the fine resolution image with direct digital synthesizer. Implemented chirp pulse generator can be useful for the SAR sensors to make 50cm range resolution image.

  • We generate short optical pulses of ∼ 6 picoseconds at 10 GHz by chirped pulse compression based on phase modulation and chirp compensation. In the suggested method, sinusoidally driven intensity and phase modulators generate chirped pulses which are subsequently suppressed by chirp compensation using a single mode fiber.

  • A new method for simultaneous multiple transmit focusing using orthogonal weighted FM chirp is proposed. Weighted chirp signals focused at different depths are transmitted at the same time. These chirp signals are mutually orthogonal in the approximate sense that the autocorrelation function of each signal has a narrow mainlobe width and low sidelobe levels, and the crosscorrellation function of any pair of the signals has smaller values than the sidelobe levels of each autocorrelation function. This means that each weighted chirp signal can be separately compressed into a short pulse, focused individually and combined with other focused beams to form a frame of image. Theoretically, any two chirp signals defined in two nonoverlapped frequency bands are mutually orthogonal. In the present work, however, a fractional overlap of adjacent frequency bands, by up to 25%, were permitted to design more chirp signals within a given transducer bandwidth. The crosscorrelation values due to the frequency overlap could be reduced by alternating the direction of frequency sweep of the adjacent chirp signals. The simulation results show that this method can improve the lateral resolution of image without sacrifice in the frame rate compared with the conventional pulse system.

  • In this paper, we investigated the improvement degree of transmission distance of the various initial frequency chirped optical pulse with 5 dBm initial power dependence on the various bit rate and fiber dispersion coefficient, when MSSI(Mid-Span Spectral Inversion) with the optimal pump power condition is adopted for the compensation method for optical pulse distortion. And we analyzed the influence of mutual relation of optical pulse frequency chirp and Kerr effect on the MSSI methods for the long-haul optical transmission through the computer simulation. We found that the compensation degree of distorted optical pulse varies as a consequence of the variation of combined phase modulation of self phase modulation(Kerr effect) and initial frequency chirp parameter dependence on the fiber dispersion coefficient. And we found that, if the transmission bit rate is increased k times, the dispersion coefficient value of dispersion shift fiber is decreased $2^k$ times so as to be almost the same performance of the transmission system with k times lower bit rate.

  • In this paper, we investigated the degree of compensation for distorted optical pulse of wavelength division multiplexed(WDM) channel with initial frequency chirp generated in optical transmitter. The WDM channel signal distortion is due to chromatic dispersion, self phase modulation(SPM) and cross phase modulation(XPM) in fiber. The considered system is 3 ${\times}$ 40 Gbps intensity modulation direct detection(IM/DD) WDM transmission systems, which adopted mid-span spectral inversion(MSSI) as compensation method. We confirmed that the effect of initial frequency chirp on compensation for signal distortion due to a SPM is gradually decreased as a dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes gradually small. But, in the aspect of a compensation for signal distortion due to both SPM and XPM, the effect of initial frequency chirp on compensation is gradually decreased as a dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes gradually large.

  • The flat power spectrum of the transmitter output signal for the desired frequency range is ideal to achieve the best performance of ultrashort pulse reflectometry. However, the power spectrum of a typical pulse generator decreases significantly as frequency increases. A configuration of three chirped waveforms was employed to improve the power spectrum of the transmitter signal at higher frequencies. To determine the amplification gain required for higher frequency components, three chirped waveforms were theoretically generated and their power spectra were measured using numerical band-pass filters. Based on the results of numerical computations, the three chirp configuration was successfully applied to the design of the transmitter for a broadband system.

  • We accomplished numerical simulations for two-uniform-fiber concatenation with both polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization-dependent loss (PDL) . The effective overall PMD is increased with the chirp parameter and the effective overall PDL is decreased with the chirp parameter. For PDL, chirping just makes the signal bandwidth wider, so makes the pulse be more depolarized than a chirp-free pulse. We showed that PDL increases the frequency dependence of the principal states of polarization, and the combination of this dependency and the bandwidth broadening by chirping can affect the effective PDL.

  • In this thesis, a Synthetic Aperture Rarar Processor that is possible real-time handling is implemented using CW(Continuose Wave) laser as a light source, CCD(charge Coupled Device) as a time integrator, and AOD(Acousto-Optic Device) as the space integrator. One of the advantages of the proposed system is that it does not require driving circuits of the light source. To implement the system, the linear frequency modulation(chirp) technique has been used for radar signal. The received data for the unit target was processed using 7.80 board and accompanying electronic circuits. In order to reduce the smear effect of the focused chirp signal which occurs Bragg diffrection angle of the AOD has been utilized to make sharp pulses of the laser source, and the pulse made synchronized with the chirp signal. Experiment and analysis results of the data and images detected from CCD of the proposed SAR system demonstrated that detection effect is degrated as the unit target distance increases, and the resolving power is improved as the bandwidth of the chirp signal increases. Also, as the pulse width of the light source decreases, the smear effect has been reduced. The experimental results assured that the proposed system in this papre can be used as a real time SAR processor.
