  • In East-South Asia it has been widely known that Korean ginseng(Panax ginseng) increases body temperature, whereas American ginseng(Panax quinquefolius) decreases it. This study was designed to find out if Korean ginseng could increase body temperature comparing with American ginseng. Double-blind randomized controlled trials on body temperature of Korean ginseng and American ginseng in Koreans and Chineses was performed by using electronic thermometer at the ear. There was no significant difference between Korean ginseng and American ginseng in Koreans as well as Chineses by repeated-measures ANOVA. It was revealed that Korean ginseng does not increase body temperature. Maybe the concept that Korean ginseng increase body temperature is concerned with commercial interests dealing with American Ginseng.

  • Objectives : Pityriasis rosea is an acute and subacute papular scaly disease, and is a disease that mainly resolves spontaneously. However, since the outbreak of COVID-19, the possibility that the disease may occur as a sequelae of the disease and side effects of vaccination has been announced. Methods : We searched articles related to oriental treatment of pityriasis rosea at organized in domestic and foreign DBs. Articles were searched for RCT. The results were summarized in tables and graphs, and meta-analysis was performed. Also, we assessed the risk or bias. Results : As a result of setting the herbal medicine alone treatment as an intervention for pityriasis rosea and Western medicine alone as the control group, total 9 articles were searched. We analyzed them and got the results. The efficient rate of the treatment group was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group. In addition, adverse events were significantly less in the treatment group than in the control group. Conclusions : Herbal medicine treatment can be more effective than Western therapy(mainly anti-histamines and glycyrrhizin injection) for pityriasis rosea. In addition, herbal medicine treatment can be superior to Western treatment for safety. However, the limitations of this study include the small number of articles, no other evaluation indicators other than the efficient rate, and insufficient data such as pathological examination.

  • Bangpungtongseong-san(BPTSS, Fangfengtongsheng-san in Chineses) is a traditional herbal formula comprising 18 medicinal herbs. In the present study, we performed the simultaneous analysis for four compounds of BPTSS and examined anti-allergic effects in human keratinocytes and mouse splenocytes. The column for separation of four compounds was used Luna C18 column and maintained at 40℃. The mobile phase for gradient elution consisted of two solvent systems. The analysis was carried out at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min with PDA detection at 254 and 280 nm. To evaluate production and expression of Th2 chemokines, ELISA and RT-PCR were conducted in tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interferon (IFN)-γ-stimulated HaCaT cells with or without BPTSS or silymarin, a positive control for skin inflammation. To measure Th2 cytokines, primary mouse splenocytes were treated with BPTSS and performed ELISA for interleukin (IL)-4, 5, 13. Calibration curves were acquired with r2>0.9999. The contents of geniposide, liquiritin, baicalin, and glycyrrhizin in BPTSS were 5.06 ㎎/g, 7.33 ㎎/g, 27.56 ㎎/g, and 7.81 ㎎/g, respectively. BPTSS reduced TARC and RANTES production and mRNA expression in TNF-α and IFN-γ-treated HaCaT cells. BPTSS inhibited IL-4, 5, and 13 production in mouse splenocytes. Our data will be a helpful information to upgrade quality control and anti-allergic effects of BPTSS.

  • Pneumocystis carinii is a major opportunistic pathogen which has been found in the lungs of a wide variety of mammalian host species, and the fact suggests the possibility of intraspecific variation. Until now, P. carinii from different mammalian species are differentiated as subspecies, and the rats are known to be infected by two subspecies. The present study investigated genetic heterogeneity of P. carinii isolates from two strains of rats in Korea and China by molecular karyotyping, RFLP and sequencing analysis. Karyotypes of P. carinii were grouped into three, two from two strains of rats In Korea and one from rats in China. However RFLP of PCR product of ribosomal and MSG gene of the P. carinii isolates showed same pattern. The sequence homology rates of ${\alpha}-tubulin$ DNA of the P. carinii isolates were 96% in Seoul Wistar rats, 93% in Seoul Sprague-Dawley rats, and 85% in Chinese Sprague-Dawley rats. The present finding confirmed that P. carinii from rats in Korea are grouped into two karyotype strains which are different from that of P. carinii from rats in China. The Chinese isolate shows a little different sequences of ${\alpha}-tubulin$ DNA.

  • 1. Objectives We know that the origine of the pe-tsai is from 백채(白菜; pronounced as bak-tsai, meaning white vegetable). But some literatures said that the japanese butterbur(Petasites japonicus (Sieb. et Zucc.) Maxim) is from 백채(白菜;: pronounced as bak-tsai), too. These two words have same origin. It makes us get into a mess. So We are about to study the origine of the pe-tsai more. Also, we investigated its historical origin, properties and Sasang constitutional medicine's efficacy. 2. Methods We reviewed farmings(e.g. 山林經濟, 林園經濟法), dictionarys(e.g. 訓蒙字會), encyclopedia(e.g. 物名攷), books on herbs and medicines to summarize literatures about the pe-tsai. 3. Results and Conclusions (1) The origin of term, pe-tsai is sung, named after a pine tree(松), chineses character pronounced as song) which we can see throughout a year. Also, pe-tsai was called white vegetables(白菜, pronounced as bak-tsai) because its appearance is green and white. Therefore, the pronounciation of sung derives from its character and we also say bak-tsai(白菜), which came from its looks. (2) Today we pronounce pe-tsai inro bae-tsu(배추) in korean. There are pronunciational developments of this word : bak-tsai(白菜) $\to$ bae-tsae $\to$ bae-tsa $\to$ bae-tsa $\to$ bae-tsae(배채) $\to$ bae-tsu(배추). (3) Our ancestor used bak-tsai(白菜) as the name of japenese butterbur, which was different from China. The latter times of Joseon(조선), however, sometimes bak-tsai(白菜) meant pe-tsai. After the year of 1800, bak-tsai(白菜) only meant pe-tsai. So when we try to translate our ancestor's books, we must examine carefully their published year. (4) Pe-tsai is used for baby's erysipelas, boil, fever in the chest, thirst after alcohol drinking and kind of diabetes. It helps digestive organs as well. Pe-tsai is used for stress, fever in the chest and cough with fever of Soyangin and Tayangin in Sasang Constitutional Medicine.

  • Purpose: According to the data presented by ministry of justice, a number of foreign workers in Korea is approximately 700 thousands and among them 22 thousands are illegal workers. We would like to provide the basic information the foreign workers by analyzing clinical contents. Methods: 1456 patients who visited the hospital were reviewed by nationality, medical department, gender and age. 62 patients have visited plastic surgery department and they were additionally reviewed by diagnosis, chief complant and operation. Results: Mongolians were 388 cases (26.7%), followed by Chineses with 452 cases (31.1%). General surgery had 264 visits (18.1%) followed by internal medicine with 388 visits (26.6%). In gender grouping, 781 patients were males and 675 patients were females. Hand, face and extremity injuries were common in plastic surgery field but many foreign worker patients also wanted to take aesthetic surgery such as scar revision, blepharoplasty and augmentation rhinoplasty. Conclusion: It has been twenty years since foreign workers have come to the Korean society. In the past foreign workers were mostly neglected. However with the vast improvement in labor and welfare related services, demands for plastic surgery, especially aesthetic surgery are increasing among foreign workers. Therefore plastic surgeons' continuous interest in foreign workers is required.
