Oldenlandiae Herba has been used for the prevention or treatment of cancer in oriental medicine for years. Experimentally its antitumor activity was reported. However, in order to develop new Korean original plants. we tried to study the antitumor activity of Chinese and Korean origin Oldenlandiae Herba. We first evaluated the cytotoxicity of Oldenlandiae Herba originated from China and Korea on HT1080, U937 and SK-mel tumor cells. MeOH extract of Chinese Oldelandiae Herba was more effective than MeOH extract of Korean Oldenlandiae Herba. Approixmately IC50 of two species of Oldelandiae Herba was 380-450 ug/ml. For evaluation of antiangiogenic activity, proliferation assay with HUVECs(Human umblical vein endothelial cells) was done with three samples. Chinese Herba and Korean Herba and root. Korean root and herba was more effective than Chinese Herba. Thus, we found Korean Oldenlandiae was more effective on angigenic activity than Chiness Oldenlandiae. In an anlytical study on effective compounds from Oldenlandiae, the spot of ursolic acid was more marked by Korean Oldenlandiae than by Chinese Oldenlandiae. whereas the spot of asperuloside was more pronounced by Chinese Oldenlandiaethan by Korean Oldenlandiae by TLC analysis.

In the result of investigating traditional chinese medical literatures to understand definite immun opharmacologic effects of drugs for clearing away heat and detoxicating such as Oldenlandiae Diffusae Herba, Fel Ursi, Fraxini Cortex, Pulsatillae Radix, Bruceae Fructus, Portulacea Herba, Patriniae Radix, we could reach conclusions as follows: 1. Oldenlandiae Diffusae Herba can increase voracity of leukocytes and immune function of splen ocytes. 2. Fel Ursi, Patriniae Radix can inhibit acute, chronic inflammation by decreasing voracity of macrophages, monocytes and recover lymphocytes. 3. Fraxini Cortex have anti-inflammatory effect then applied to treat with arthritis. Pulsatillae Radix, Bruceae Fructus, Portulacea Herba have anti-cancer, anti-biotic effects. Above results indicates that drugs for clearing away heat immunosuppressive effect that they can apply to all sorts of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, DTH, SLE, and cancer.

For the evaluation of anti-tumor activity of Korean Oldenlandia Herb (KOH) and Radix (KOR), our experiment was performed with methanol extracts of KOH and KOR. They did not shown any cytotoxicity against HT1080 cell lines. However, they effectively showed anti-metastatic activity through inhibition of the adhesion of HT1080 cells to gelatin, downregulated the expression of MMP2 and uPA and upregulated the expression of TIMP2. They also inhibited tube formation of HUVECs induced by bFGF. However, they did not affect DNA topoisomerase I activity. Simiarly, the T/Cs % in KOH and KOR treated mice were increased 134.9% and 171 %, respectively at 2500 mg/kg. These results suggest that KOH and KOR exert anti-tumor activity via anti-metastatic and anti-angiogenic activities. The further study for isolation of effective compounds and its exact mechanism and comparative study with Chinese Oldenlandia Herba will be required.
