  • The purpose of this study was to clarify the palatal volume and anterior palatal slope of the children with class II div.1 malocclusion and normal occlusion in mixed dentition(Hellman dental age III A) using three-dimensional laser scanner. Samples were consisted of 31 children with skeletal class II div.1 malocclusion in mixed dentition and 29 children with normal occlusion and profile among the contestants in 2000-2004 Healthy Dentition Contest in Seoul. Totally 60 maxillary study model were taken. Each cast was scanned by three-dimensional laser scanner (Breuckmann opto-TOP HE, INUS, Korea) and shaped into the three-dimension image by Rapidform 2004 program(INUS, Korea). And the palatal volume and anterior palatal slope of each cast were calculated by Rapidform 2004 program(INUS, Korea). The values were statistically compared and evaluated by independent samples t-test with 95% of significance level. The results were as follows: 1. Palatal volume was significantly lesser in children with class II div.1 malocclusion than that of normal occlusion in mixed dentition(p<0.05). 2. No significant difference in the anterior palatal slope and palatal height was found between the children with class II div.1 malocclusion and normal occlusion in mixed dentition(p>0.05). 3. Palatal length was significantly greater in children with class II div.1 malocclusion than that of normal occlusion in mixed dentition(p<0.01). 4. Intercanine and intermolar width were significantly lesser in children with class II div.1 malocclusion than those of normal occlusion in mixed dentition(respectively p<0.05 and p<0.01).

  • The present study was designed to formulate cephalometric norms of normal occlusion for usage in orthodontic diagnosis of malocclusion in Korean children. Thirty two children, aged 4 to 6, with normal occlusion were chosen for this study, Sagittal and vertical relations were analyzed using lateral cephalogram and clinical photos and the measurements were compared with those of adults. On skeletal sagittal analysis, the mean values of the SNA and SNB angles were $83^{\circ}\;and\;78.72^{\circ}$. It showed that the mandible was retrognathic and retropositioned in comparison to those of adults. On skeletal vertical analysis, the mean values of the genial angle was $127^{\circ}$. This showed high angle pattern in children and reduction of genial angle due to counterclockwise rotation of the mandible is expected with growth. On soft tissue analysis, children showed convex pronto, obtuse nasolabial angle. On dental analysis, the mean values of the U1 to SN and IMPA were $91.04^{\circ}\;and\;86.57^{\circ}$. This showed retroclined upper and lower deciduous teeth in comparison to adults. For skeletal values, the liner values were generally greater in males than females.

  • In the growing children with normal occlusion and class III malocclusion who need the early treatment to be helped to diagnose and to set up treatment plan by calculating the mean values of the lateral cephalometric measurements, cephalometric measurements by McNamara alalysis were achieved and compared on both the 84 elementary school children with normal occlusion and 83 class III malocclusion children at the age of 7 to 9 in Kwangju city and the results were as follows: 1. On the boys group, between normal occlusion and class III malocclusion, Effective maxillary length, Maxillomandibular differential, Facial axis, Nasion perpendicualr to pogonion, Point A perp to Mx 1, and A-Pog line to Mn 1 showed significant differences(p<0.05). 2. On the girls group, between normal occlusion and class III malocclusion significant differences were shown in Effective Maxillary length, Maxillomandibular differential, Mandibular plan angle, Nasion perpendicualr to Point A, Point A perp to Mx 1, A-Pog line to Mn 1(p<0.01). 3. There were no significant differences between normal occlusion and class III malocclusion of boys group but significant differences between them of girls group in Effective mandibular length(P<0.01). On the boys and girls group, Effective maxilla length of class III malocclusion was shorter than that of normal occlusion. 4. There were no significant differences between normal occlusion and class III malocclusion both in boys and girls at Anterior lower facial height. 5. There were significant differences between boys and girls both in class III malocclusion and normal occlusion at Anterior lower facial height and Mandibular plane angle(p<0.01).

  • This study was to evaluate and compare differences of the cervical vertebral skeletal maturity of normal occlusion and skeletal Class III malocclusion. Normal occlusion (172 girls) and skeletal Class III malocclusion(191 girls) were classified according to diagnosis stone model and lateral cephalogram of Korean girls aging from 8 to 12 years. The concavity of inferior border, vertico-horizontal ratio of cervical vertebrae were observed and measured according to age. Differences of the cervical vertebral skeletal maturity were evaluated. The results were as follows : 1. The concavity of inferior border of the 2nd to 6th vertebrae of normal occlusion and skeletal Class III had uniformly increased with age. 2. The vertico-horizontal ratio of the 3rd to 6th vertebrae of girls with normal occlusion and skeletal Class III had uniformly increased with age. 3. There was no significant difference in cervical vertebral skeletal maturity between normal occlusion and skeletal Class III malocclusion in the concavity of inferior border of the 2nd to 6th vertebrae and in the vertico-horizontal ratio of the 3rd to 6th vertebrae. The results in the study indicate that there is no significant difference of cervical vertebral skeletal maturity between girls with normal occlusion and skeletal Class III malocclusion.

  • This study was made to investigate the influence of mouth breathing to tongue, mandible and hyoid bone position. It has been clinically suggested that the mouth breathing is induced by the respiratory dysfunction of nasopharyngeal airway causing by the Adenoids. The author used the 50 children, who were the nasal breathes with normal occlusion as the control group, and 50 children, who were mouth breathers with Adenoid as the experimental group. Results were as following: 1. In experimental group, the tongue was positioned more anterior and lower than that of the normal children. 2. In experimental group, the mandible was positioned more lower than that of the normal children. 3. In experimental group, the hyoid bone was positioned more anterior and lower than that of the normal children.
