Purpose: We compared the clinical manifestations of patients with tsutsugamushi disease between children and adults. Methods: From January 2003 to December 2012, 768 patients diagnosed with tsutsugamushi disease were retrospectively reviewed, and the clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, and complications were compared between children and adults. Results: No patterns of annual increases in the number of patients were noted in both children and adults. The higher incidences occurred in October and November respectively. By gender, male outnumbered female in children, but the opposite trend was seen in adults. By residential area, the urban distribution of children was higher than that of adults. Rashes (P =0.001) and eschar (P =0.004) were more common in children, while myalgia was more common in adults. Children had a high prevalence of anemia (P =0.041), and low incidence rates of thrombocytopenia, abnormal liver and renal function. Children yielded better results in the duration of their hospital stay and the incidence of complications (P <0.001). A comparison of the therapeutic effects of doxycycline and macrolide antibiotics, which was performed only on the children, did not reveal any significant differences. Conclusion: Compared to adults, children had higher incidence rates of male patients and more often suffered from rashes and eschar. Children yielded better results in the laboratory findings and duration of the hospital stay and complications. Therefore, when children are suspected to have tsutsugamushi disease, especially during its peak occurrence period, detailed physical examination and serological test should be performed to ensure a prompt diagnosis, and the use of macrolide antibiotics, which have fewer side effects, is expected to yield the same therapeutic effects.

This study is to provide overall evaluation and analysis of the Reading Culture Promotion Project by the National Library for Children and Young Adults, thus to present ways of development and new strategies. To serve this purpose, we have conducted empirical evaluation of 9 major projects using literature review, survey, Borich demand analysis and The Locus for Focus model analysis. As a result of the evaluation, the program was categorized into three groups: four projects to be continuously expanded in the future, three requiring some improvement and redirection, and two to be reviewed to determine whether to proceed or not. In addition, the results of the evaluation of the project were analyzed in depth to suggest ways to improve the Reading Culture Promotion Project which will be carried out at the National Library for Children and Young Adults.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify social support networks for each life-cycle stage of adults. Method: A total of 1,047 subjects included 454 young adults, 262 middle-aged adults and 331 senior adults. Data were collected using Oh's Korean Version Norbeck's Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ), and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA. Result: For the young adults, parents were the top and second priority as important social support resources, the third was siblings, and then friends. For the middle-aged, spouse was the first priority as an important social support resource, while the second and the third were children. For the senior adults, children ranked from the top to the seventh priority. The mean number of social support resources was 13.23 for the young adult, 12.93 for the middle-aged and 5.30 for the senior adults. Social support networks of the young adults significantly differed according to gender and marital status. That of the middle-aged significantly differed according to family size. In addition, that of the senior adults was significantly different according to marital status, economic status, religion and family size. Conclusion: It is essential to consider social support networks for each life-cycle stage of adults when making a social support intervention program.
Objective: The purpose of this research was to investigate the age-related changes in whole-body motor variability during sit-to-stand (STS) task. It has been reported that children perform motor tasks less accurately with greater variability as compared to adults. However, it is still unknown how they utilize the abundant degrees of freedom and accomplish voluntary actions. Uncontrolled manifold (UCM) analysis has been used to partition motor variabilities into two independent variability components, task-relevant variability (VORT) and task-irrelevant variability (VUCM). We investigated what differences exist between children and adults with respect to these two motor variability components in relation to motor development stages. Method: Ten 6-year-old children (height: 116.2 ± 4.3 cm, weight: 23.1 ± 3.9 kg, motor development assessment percentile score: 77.5 ± 18.6%), ten 10-year-old children (height: 138.7 ± 7.2 cm, weight: 35.8 ± 10.3 kg, motor development assessment percentile score: 73.9 ± 12.7%), and ten young adults (age: 23 ± 1.6 year-old, height: 164.3 ± 11.4 cm, weight: 60.8 ± 12.0 kg) participated in this study. Each participant performed STS ten times, and a motion capture system was used to capture the whole-body kinematics. Each segment centers of mass and the whole-body center of mass were calculated, and UCM analysis was used to quantify motor variabilities, VORT and VUCM. One-way ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. Results: We found that children produced more motor variabilities in VORT and VUCM in all three dimensions, anterior-posterior, medial-lateral, and vertical. As age increased, both, VORT and VUCM significantly decreased (p<.05). Conclusion: The greater VORT found in children compared to adults indicates that the repeatability over repetitions improves through development, while the greater VUCM found in children suggests that children better utilize the abundant degrees of freedom during STS compared to adults.
Despite evidence from adults that stimulus incongruity increased arousal level, there have been no published reports demonstrating this relationship with children. Therefore, the present study was done to 1) investigate the relationship between the introduction of stimulus incongruity and children's arousal level, using the GSR as an index of arousal; 2) determine whether age difference among subjects would affect the magnitude of the effect of incongruity on GSR ; and 3) determine the feasility of using the GSR with young children, particularly when manipulating a variable considered to involve only modest increase in arousal. The results were: 1) The incongrous outcome of two brief stories increased the arousal level of the subjects in the present study 2) The effect was related primarily in the GSR arousal scores of adult subjects. The smaller or nonexistent reactions to incongruity by the children represent essentially new results, as little or previous research exists involving the arousal level of young children to visual or auditorily presented stimuli. Several possibilities regarding the failure of the incongruity to generate arousal in the young children were considered Methodolog both in using GSR as an index of arousal level and in developing visual or audio stimuli involving incongruity was discussed.

This study tried to identify the reading and library use and requirements of children and young adults with disabilities in school age, and to suggest improvements in library policy, centered on the National Library for the Disabled Unlike the library policy centered on the creation of alternative materials and the establishment of an integrated cataloging system for alternative materials, children and young adults with disabilities mainly use paper books, and 80% of them hardly use the library. This study established a system centered on the special school library and proposed to establish a foundation for enjoying reading culture through curation of books by disability type and developmental age. In addition, based on the development of international standardization of multimedia collections, cooperation with the National Library for Children and Young Adults, and the expansion of librarian, collections, and budgets of special school libraries, linkage with students with disabilities in special classes of general schools was suggested.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major medical challenge affecting around 200 million people worldwide. The main site of HCV replication is the hepatocytes of the liver. HCV is a positive enveloped RNA virus from the flaviviridae family. Six major HCV genotypes are implicated in the human infection. In developed countries the children are infected mainly through vertical transmission during deliveries, while in developing countries it is still due to horizontal transmission from adults. Minimal nonspecific and brief symptoms are initially found in approximately 15% of children. Acute and chronic HCV infection is diagnosed through the recognition of HCV RNA. The main objective for treatment of chronic HCV is to convert detected HCV viremia to below the detection limit. Children with chronic HCV infection are usually asymptomatic and rarely develop severe liver damage. Therefore, the benefits from current therapies, pegylated-Interferon plus ribavirin, must be weighed against their adverse effects. This combined treatment offers a 50-90% chance of clearing HCV infection according to several studies and on different HCV genotype. Recent direct acting antiviral (DAA) drugs which are well established for adults have not yet been approved for children and young adults below 18 years. The most important field for the prevention of HCV infection in children would be the prevention of perinatal and parenteral transmission. There are areas of focus for new lines of research in pediatric HCV-related disease that can be addressed in the near future.
Young children's speech is compared to adult-to-adult speech and adult-to-child speech by measuring durations and variability of each segment in CVC words. The results demonstrate that child speech exhibits an inconsistent timing relationship between consonants and vowels within a word. In contrast, consonant and vowel durations in adult-to-adult speech and adult-to-child speech exhibit significant relationships across segments, despite variability of segments when speaking rate is decreased. The results suggest that temporal patterns of young children are quite different from those of adults, and provide some evidence for lack of motor control capability and great variance in articulatory coordination.
