Objectives : The early onset of mood symptoms in bipolar disorder has been associated with poor outcomes in many studies. However, aspects of the clinical course of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents are controversial. The goal of this article is to review the clinical characteristics and longitudinal course of children and adolescents with bipolar disorders. Methods : Searches were conducted in MedLine, PsycINFO, KISS, and RISS using the terms phenomenology, clinical course, outcome, BPD, pediatric, children and adolescents. Twenty-one reports were selected : either original articles reporting symptoms and clinical characteristics of subjects (ages 5-18 years), or published articles in reviewed journals about bipolar disorder in children and adolescents. Results : Approximately 70% of subjects with bipolar disorder recovered from their index episode, and 50% had at least 1 syndromal recurrence, particularly depressive episodes. For 60% of the follow-up time, subjects had syndromal or subsyndromal symptoms with numerous changes in symptoms and shifts of polarity. Approximately 20% of BP-II subjects converted BP-I. Conclusion : Bipolar disorders in children and adolescents are characterized by episodic illness with subsyndromal and syndromal episodes with mainly depressive and mixed symptoms and rapid mood changes. Extensive follow-up time is needed to evaluate the continuity of bipolar disorder symptoms from childhood to adulthood.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the trends in domestic research related to health literacy in children and adolescents. Methods: Six journal articles and four dissertations or theses related to health literacy in children and adolescents were analyzed according to the following criteria: study aim, research design, study population and sample size, sampling method, health literacy variables, and characteristics of health literacy measurement instruments. Result: The majority of studies focused on general children and adolescents. Correlational studies were most prevalent, while no experimental study was identified at all. The variable most frequently explored in relation to health literacy was health promoting behaviors. Functional health literacy instruments, assessing numeracy and reading comprehension, were most commonly used to evaluate child and adolescent health literacy. Conclusion: Considering the emphasis on health literacy improvement in order to achieve health equity across the entire life cycle, there is a need for both quantitative and qualitative growth in domestic health literacy studies for children and adolescents. School-based interventions are essential for enhancing health literacy. Furthermore, it is also necessary to develop an instrument to measure health literacy of children and adolescents that can be utilized and monitored at the national level.
This paper outlines the findings of a consumer survey conducted in 1996 and 2001 by the University of Bonn, Germany, across 15 European countries. The survey involved a sample of 3,300 respondents in 1996 and around 11,000 respondents in 2001, throughout all 15 EU countries. Children and adolescents, between the ages of 10 and 17, were surveyed about their consumption habits and their attitudes towards the environment. The paper outlines the key findings on 'Children's fears and future prospects'. Children are exposed to a great mass of information, not only derived from the media but also from what they experience directly in their everyday-life. Some of this information translates into worries that adopt a clearer (more realistic) form when children become adolescents, as they might be easily involved in those events, and the understanding of the processes that may cause or continue them is deeper. Today's children and adolescents are under more pressure, since the social/political/economical spectrum is constantly changing. Change produces anxiety, fear of what will result from these transformations, as it implies that the social order will be reorganized. This paper reports on a long term comparative study among children and adolescents throughout the European Union, analyzed by country, age group and gender. It draws different preoccupations of young generations and consequent future expectations. It concludes by considering the influence of social and political organizations, as well as the family, on children and adolescents, as these might help to sustain a positive attitude towards various future events.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is the tooth decay ratio of the children and adolescents in four rural areas of Kyrgyzstan. Methods: Oral examinations were conducted 2,677 children and adolescents in Nizhniy chuy, Bokonbayevo, Chon Tash and Arashan from March 2017 to November 2019. It was investigated decayed tooth ratio(DT), decay permanent tooth ratio(DPT) and missing permanent tooth ratio(DMT) according to ages and areas by direct observation of the oral cavity. Results: In all areas, the rate of all children and adolescents aged 6 to 14 had very high DT of more than 94 percent overall. Furthermore, it was showed that high DPT rates above 78% on average and DMT over 8 years old in Chon Tash and Arashan. Conclusion: These results are higher than the average of DT, DPT and DMT in OECD countries. In order to promote oral health of children and adolescents, increased interest in oral health and policy measures at the Kyrgyzstan government level are considered urgent.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to provide evidence of traditional Korean medicine treatment in children and adolescents by reviewing previous studies published in the journal of pediatrics of Korean medicine. Methods We have reviewed clinical studies of children and adolescents in the journal of pediatrics of Korean medicine from 2008 to 2017. Results Eighty-seven clinical studies of children and adolescents were reviewed. Total number of patients were 1644 in the studies. Among these, top 5 most commonly reported diseases in children and adolescents were atopic dermatitis, growth, autism, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and obesity. The most common intervention to treat those was taking herbal medicine. Most of the clinical studies showed effectiveness of this approach in treating children and adolescents. Conclusions More double-blinded randomized controlled clinical trials of Korean medicine interventions treating children and adolescents are needed to establish evidence-based treatment.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS), metabolic abnormalities, and nutrient intakes in Korea children and adolescents using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2008. Methods: A sample of 838 children and adolescent males (n=442) and females (n=396) aged 10-18 was used from the 2008 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination survey. The diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome subjects was adapted from modified National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III by Ford. To compare nutrient intakes, we used a judgment sampling. The first group was composed of all children and adolescents (n=46) with MS. The second one along with the first group had children and adolescents with the same age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) but without MS (n=46). The control group like the first two had children and adolescents with same sex and same age but with normal BMI and without MS (n=46). Results: In this randomized controlled controlled trial, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was 5.8%. The risk factors was associated with the MS were abdominal obesity 9.4%, hypertriglyceridemia 25.0%, low HDL-cholesterol 10.3%, hypertension 23.4%, and hyperglycemia 7.1%. Among metabolic abnormalities, blood pressure was significantly affected by sex, age and obesity. On the other hand, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and waist circumference were directly linked to obesity. There were no significant differences in nutrient intakes among the three groups. Conclusions: The prevalence of MS was higher in children (10-11 years old) than in adolescents (12-18 years old). There was a difference in hypertension among risk factors by gender, and there were no significant differences in nutrient intakes.
Objectives : The aim of the study is to estimate the dental caries experience and the factors influencing the dental caries in children and adolescents and to provide the data for effective management of oral health in children and adolescents. Methods : Subjects were 446 students randomly recruited in primary, middle, high school students located in Seoul from April 1 to May 31 2011. The data were collected by a questionnaire survey and direct oral examination. The collected data were analyzed with the SPSS WIN 14.0 program. Results : DMF in male accounted for 88.8% and that in female accounted for 89.1%. The oral promotion behaviors in female was significantly higher than those in male (p<0.001). Aged (p<0.05) and well-educated parents(p<0.001) tended to have better oral promotion behaviors. The higher oral health knowledge, the better oral health promotion behaviors. Better oral health promotion behaviors tended to have lower DMFT and DT index (p<0.01). In regression analysis, age, oral health promotion behavior in children and adolescents were related to the dental caries experience (p<0.001). Poor oral health promotion behaviors increased the dental caries experience. Conclusions : The active oral health care can prevent dental caries in children and adolescents. The concern for oral health care is important to maintain healthy dental hygiene.
Objectives: This study was performed to investigate secular trends in height, weight, obesity among Korean children and adolescents in 2006-2015. Methods: The study participants were 1,249,698 children and adolescents 6-17 years in age who participated in health examinations for school students supervised by Korean Ministry of Education and conducted by the Korea Association of Health Promotion in 2006-2015. Height and weight were measured unified procedures at each period. Obesity was defined as being 95th percentile of sex-specific body mass index(BMI) for age in the 2007 Korean National Growth Charts or $BMI{\geq}25$. Results: Between 2006 and 2015, the median of height and weight, BMI of Korean children and adolescents has increased significantly. The overall prevalence of obesity was 10.7%(boys 12.6%, girls 8.7%). In 2012-2015, the prevalence of obesity 12.2%(boys 14.1%, girls 10.2%), compared to 9.1%(boys 10.9%, 7.2%) in 2006-2008. The increase in obesity prevalence was statistically significant(p<0.05). The prevalence was highest in Gyeonggi area, lowest in Chungcheong area when compared to other regions(p<0.001). Conclusions: During the period 2006-2015, growth trends, prevalence of obesity among Korean children and adolescents increased significantly. Health promotion and intervention programs promoting healthy growth and development of Korean children and adolescents were need consider the demographic and regional characteristics.

Objective: Prior functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) work has revealed that children/adolescents with disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) show dysfunctional reward/non-reward processing of non-social reinforcements in the context of instrumental learning tasks. Neural responsiveness to social reinforcements during instrumental learning, despite the importance of this for socialization, has not yet been previously investigated. Methods: Twenty-nine healthy children/adolescents and 19 children/adolescents with DBDs performed the fMRI social/non-social reinforcement learning task. Participants responded to random fractal image stimuli and received social and non-social rewards/non-rewards according to their accuracy. Results: Children/adolescents with DBDs showed significantly reduced responses within the caudate and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) to non-social (financial) rewards and social non-rewards (the distress of others). Connectivity analyses revealed that children/adolescents with DBDs have decreased positive functional connectivity between the ventral striatum (VST) and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) seeds and the lateral frontal cortex in response to reward relative to non-reward, irrespective of its sociality. In addition, they showed decreased positive connectivity between the vmPFC seed and the amygdala in response to non-reward relative to reward. Conclusion: These data indicate compromised reinforcement processing of both non-social rewards and social non-rewards in children/adolescents with DBDs within core regions for instrumental learning and reinforcement-based decision-making (caudate and PCC). In addition, children/adolescents with DBDs show dysfunctional interactions between the VST, vmPFC, and lateral frontal cortex in response to rewarded instrumental actions potentially reflecting disruptions in attention to rewarded stimuli.
The purpose of this study is to examine children's/adolescents' motives for playing internet games and adaptation to school in accordance with their frequency levels of playing internet games. Participants were 236 children from grades 4, 5, and 6 in two elementary schools and 237 adolescents from grades 1, 2, and 3 in one middle school. They were measured on frequency levels of playing internet games, motives for playing internet games, and adaptation to school. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 for reliability, frequency, Chi-square test, t-test, Pearson's correlation, and one way ANOVA. Major findings of the research are as follows: First, children's/adolescents' frequency levels of playing internet games differed by their gender. The male ratio was much higher than the female ratio in the potential risk group and the high risk poop. In contrast, no grade differences on the frequency levels of playing internet games were found. Second, children's/adolescents' motives for playing internet games differed by their gender. Especially, among the motives the greatest difference between male and female was marked for 'Social Relationship'. Third, children's/adolescents' motives for playing internet games differed by their frequency levels of playing internet games. For 'Conformity,' the low risk group differed from the high risk group. For 'Spending Time', 'Benefit', 'Competition', and 'Social Relationship', the low risk group differed from the potential risk group and also from the high risk poop. Fourth, children's/adolescents' adaptation to school differed by their frequency levels of playing internet games. The high risk group exhibited a low level of adaptation in 'Academic Activities', 'a subcategory of adaptation to school.
