The aim of this study was to explore the current status, and public policy issues related to child counselors, with a special focus on training programs and integrating such training into the national qualification system in Korea. The number of children manifesting various social and emotional developmental problems have increased recently. Thus, there is a clear and growing need for suitably qualified specialists to help them and their parents. Child counselors (CCs) are qualified specialists in child counseling and therapy. However, there are no national qualifications or training systems for CCs in Korea. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a Korean national qualification and training system of CCs by comparing the Korean Youth counselor's qualification, training and in-service training system, and with those of both Germany and the USA. In addition, this study suggested the inclusion of a practicum component and a suitable in-service training system for Korean CCs.
This study designed, implemented, and evaluated a Biblio-Counseling program for elementary school children. Procedures included 20 60-minute sessions by counselor, 18 20-minute sessions in class by teacher, and 5 20-minute sessions at home by parents. The program was administered to 23 third grade elementary school children. Data were analyzed by frequency, mean, and paired t-test, using SPSS program packages. Results showed significant before and after differences in the degree of self-esteem. Besides, the children reported increased positive expression in class and decreased peer neglect and rejection at school. Children, parents and teacher expressed high satisfaction with the program. These results suggest that the multi-faceted approach as designed and implemented in this study is effective in promoting self-esteem, interpersonal growth, and relationship between child and parents.
It is necessarily for a counselor's role to vary according to the cultures. While an autonomy is stressed in Western horizontal society, sociability is emphasized in Korea which is a vertical authoritarian society. What is more, a lot of people look to a counselor for elder's role as a teacher or a fosterer as well as a therapist. The two basic framework of Reality Dynamic Counseling which has been developed as a counseling approach for Korean are 'presentization for problem' and 'elder's role of a counselor'. An elder's role of counselor showed in real counseling case is illustrated by 'narrative methods' in this study. The 'story making methods' as one of qualitative research methods is more useful than a protocol method which has been used in studying counseling case, because it has conciseness for original text of dialogs and commentary for counseling process. The seven characteristics of Reality Dynamic Counseling such as grasping the real cause, understanding mind,, emphasizing interpersonal factor, emphasis on role, utilizing confrontation, emphasizing the relationship of parent-child, and facilitating sociability are reflected in such an elder's role of counselor.
School adjustment of elementary school children is one of the most important things, sinceitisthebasisofthefuturelife. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parent-child relationship, peer relationship, teacher-child relationship, and school adjustment of elementary school students. The research topics of the present study were as follows: (1) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the parent-child relationship? (2) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the peer relationship? (3) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the teacher-child relationship in school? (4) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the grade, and sex? 460 students were sampled in Kangwon-do, and 400 were used in the final data analyses, excluding 60 due to the incomplete answering. Parent-child relationship inventory, peer relationship inventory, teacher-child relationship scale, and school adjustment scale were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS(win) 10.1K. The results were as follows: First, elementary school students adjust themselves to the school better when parent-child relationship, peer relationship, and teacher-child relationship are good. Second, teacher-child relationship has the most important effects on the school adjustment, and peer relationship, and parent-child relationship sequentially. Third, 4th graders adjust to the school better than the 6th, and there is no difference between boys and girls in terms of school adjustments. Based on the above results, discussion and implications for the future research and education were as below: First, teachers need to understand children's school adjustments depend upon their human relationships especially upon teacher-student relationships. Second, teachers need to understand students have more difficulties in adjusting to the school when they grow older. Third, teachers have to keep the children positive peer relationship, and parent-child relationship which are important in children's adjusting to the school. Fourth, future researches need nation-wide sampling and more systematized research design in order to generalize the results.
The Reality Dynamic Counseling which reflects Korean culture and Korean sensibilities has been introduced as a model of Korean counseling approach. This is a qualitative study to examine how the characteristics of Reality Dynamic Counseling appear upon the real counseling process for the clients who were physically attacked by their own son and were brought to this counseling export from juvenile counseling service center. The major properties of Reality Dynamic Counseling are grasping the problem with connecting whole context, dealing with an external world as well as an internal world, emphasizing a role in relation with others, serving as a fosterer or an educator for counselor, confronting a client to awake from a disillusion, restoring to the good relationship between a parent and a child, and pulling a client to the relation with people. These properties are well brought out in the real counseling process. The Manual written by a counselor which gives us detailed commentary on counseling process was selected and analyzed in this study because the protocol between a counselor and a client was too large quantity and it could not show on how to change like facial expression and voice.
This study examined books of youngsters who struggled with typical problems in adolescent period. Literature could be used as an effective tool for helping young people cope with developmental change. In bibliotherapy, the counselor provides guidance in the solution of personal problems through directed reading. Young people would solve and overcome their problems after reading useful books. So we need to carefully select books for the Youth. Selecting high-quality books that match the young person's reading level and interest were very important. Twenty three books that offer solutions that are likely to be successful in the young people's situation were gathered by 322 participants. Method of collecting materials was through a questionnaire. In addition results based on obtaining books showed that counselors provided reading guidances and were concerned with quality materials.
This study presented the role of the counselor's transitional object through literature research, focusing on Winnicott's theory. In the process of development, infants experience anxiety when they move from absolute dependence to relative dependence with their mother. In this way, the counselor's role as an transitional object buffers separation anxiety and depressive anxiety about the loss experience, and mediates from the omnipotent fantasy to the real world. transitional objects are new objects and have a function of contributing to adaptation in reality. And it leads to the stage of separation and individualization through transitional object and transitional phenomena. It can be said that he acquires a sense of the real other that exists in order to create and destroy omnipotent, and to adapt to reality. A good enough mother makes the child's omnipotence meaningful. In this case, the true self helps the infant's weak self to grow and lead him to live his own life. When the mother fails to satisfy the infant's needs, her fantasies and spontaneous impulses are lacking. In other words, when the mother fails to reflect the infant's needs, the infant looks at her mother's mood, giving up her true self and creating a false self. The pathology of the absolute dependence phase is caused by the failure of a good enough mother's empathy and nurturing environment. At this time, the child experiences the collapse of the omnipotence illusion and experiences annihilation anxiety. Therefore, effective counseling can be carried out when providing a comfortable and stable environment by reducing separation anxiety and depressive anxiety of clients through the role of the counselor's transitional object in the counseling field.
The purpose of this study is to draw the elements of encouraging language from the literatures of encouragement and develop the encouraging language model for elementary school teachers. To achieve this, first of all, the literatures about the methods of encouragement were collected. And then the collected literatures were categorized according to the main concept which each literature contained. As a result, 5 categories and 17 subcategories were drawn. 5 categories were valuing a child as a human-being itself, trusting a child, thinking rationally about a child's mistakes, giving a feedback about a child's behaviors non-evaluatively, and reflecting a child's positive feeling. These 5 categories were established as the elements of encouraging language. The encouraging language model was developed on the bases of the 5 elements of encouraging language. The model was constructed of the examples of encouraging language in various classroom situations. The model contains various situations which elementary school teachers often confront in their classrooms. And the model shows the examples of encouraging language proper for each situation. Every example was constructed on the bases of the elements of encouraging language.
This article tried to show a new paradigm for elementary school counseling in Korea. Counseling in Korean elementary school has focused on the individual child and/or group of the children without considering school circumstances. But school has some special features which have to be counted for the efficiency of child counseling. Take for an example, children have to spend most of their day time with a class teacher for 6 days a week. So the talks and behaviors of the class teacher have strong influence on the children. These factors should be included in the elementary school counseling to help children grow up and develop. : Six main topics discussed in this articles were as follows. 1. Developmental tasks of Korean children have to be searched and organized. 2. The concept of class management has to be combined with the concept of counseling. 3. Establishing the conditions to facilitate subject learning has to be emphasized in the school counseling. 4. Counseling instruments applicable to the children should be developed. 5. The proper knowledge of teacher's way cf talking and behaving in class life should be organized. 6. The resources of school counseling should be identified and interconnected to provide better counseling service to the children.
