A case of Niemann-Pick disease type A (A형 Niemann-Pick 병 1례)

  • Niemann-Pick disease is a group of autosomal recessive disorders associated with hepatosplenomegaly, variable neurologic deficits, and the storage of sphingomyelin and other lipids. Seven cases have been reported in Korea. We report an additional case presenting with hypotonia, early neurodevelopmental delay, hepatosplenomegaly and death by persistent pneumonia and asphyxia at the age of 23 months. MRI of brain and fundoscopic findings of our case at 4 months of age were normal. However, abnormal intensity of the thalamus and atrophy of the right temporal lobe on the MRI and macular cherry red spots were noticed at the age of 17 months. A bone marrow biopsy showed large foamy cells, while hexosaminidase A and B levels were normal. Although biochemical or molecular workup was not done, these findings led to the diagnosis of infantile onset Niemann-Pick disease, probably type A. A brief review of the related literatures was made.

New Cymbidium Variety "Yellow Evening", with Brownish Yellow Flower Color on Red Spot Lip and Medium Plant

  • A New Cymbidium variety "Yellow Evening" was developed from a cross between "Oji" and "Valley Flower Cherry Life" followed by seedling and line selections at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA) in 2004. After investigation of the characteristics and selection for 9 years (1996-2004), it has been selected specifically pot orchid flower. "Yellow Evening" has medium plant height and semi-erect peduncle. It has medium flowering habit and brownish yellow flowers (RHS, Y11B: petal and sepal) with grayed purple GP183A) spot on lip, when fully opened. Each peduncle has 15.3 flowers with diameter of about 7.4 cm. It has adequate peduncle height, with some curved and spreading petal and sepals. Under optical culture conditions, it started to bloom early-winter (November).

  • Galactosialidosis is a lysosomal storage disease associated with a combined deficiency of ${\beta}$-galactosidase and ${\alpha}$-neuraminidase, secondary to a defect of another lysosomal protective protein. It is a neurodegenerative disorder clinically characterized by psychomotor deterioration, cerebellar ataxia, coarse facies, generalized bony deformity and organomegaly. Three phenotypic subtype are recognized: early infantile, late infantile and juvenile/adult type. We report a 13 months old boy with a late infantile galactosialidosis. He was presented with progressive mental regression and motor disturbance and observed cherry red spot, hearing loss, moderate dysostosis multiplex and vacuolated lymphocytes in peripheral blood. He showed only ${\beta}$-galactosidase deficiency in the lymphocytes and was initially diagnosed as $GM_1$-gangliosidosis type 1. However, further studies revealed the possible defect of ${\alpha}$-neuraminidase suggesting that he was a case of galactosialidosis which was mimicking $GM_1$-gangliosidosis type 1.

Occurrence and Symptoms of Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus on Vegetables in Korea (I) (채소류의 토마토 반점 위조 바이러스 발생과 병징 (I))

  • Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) occurred abruptly with a high incidence rate in 14 vegetable crops in Anyang area, Gyunggido in 2004. TSWV was identified by the symptoms on the indicator plants, immunocaptured reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (IC/RT-PCR), virion captured (VC)RT-PCR and RT-PCR using total RNA from the infected plants. Vegetable crops infected with TSWV included table tomato, cherry tomato, red pepper, lettuce, chicory, red leaf chicory, red mustard, dragon tongue, treviso, potato, perilla, sesame, pumpkin, and ssamchoo (hybrid of oriental cabbage and cabbage). The incidence of TSWV in fields ranged from 30 to $100\%$. TSWV usually produced necrosis, wilt and/or severe mosaic with typical single or double ring spots on the leaves. TSWV could be detected in Frankliniella occidentalis collected from the crops in the fields with $90\%$ rate by IC/RT-PCR.
