  • Dried top and root extracts of seven different weed species, fresh top and root extracts, and various concentrations of extract (0, 5, 10 and 15%, W/V) and residue rate (0.0, 0.25. 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0%) of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) were used to study their allelopathic effects on alfalfa in the laboratory and greenhouse. Top and root aqueous extracts of common lambsquarter (Chenopodium album L.), giant foxtail (Setaria faberii Herrm), redroot pig-weed (Amaranthus retroflexus L), velvetleaf, large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L), canada thistle (Cirsium arvense L.) and prostrate knotweed (Polygonium aviculare L.) significantly inhibited germination, seedling length, weight, and vigor in alfalfa. Top growth extracts of weeds exhibited greater allelopathic effects than root extracts. Alfalfa test species, WL-320, responded significantly different to the various weed species extracts in terms of allelopathic effect. The regression slopes of various top extracts showed significant variation with respect to germination percentage. Velvetleaf (b=3.69) extracts were the most inhibitory, while large crabgrass (b=2.39) extracts had the least allelopathic effect on alfalfa. When compared the activity of fresh velvetleaf extract to that of dry velvetleaf extract, dry extract was more inhibitory to alfalfa germination and seedling growth. Germination, seedling length and weight of alfalfa were inversely proportional to the concentration of dried velvetleaf extracts. Seedling emergence and survival percentage was inhibited by velvetleaf residue mixture treatment. Also, more of the toxic effects were observed from the dried top extracts, as compared to extracts from fresh top and root. These results demonstrate the allelopathic activity of different weed species extracts and suggest that weeds may affect crop growth and development due to the inhibitory effects of allelochemicals present in weed tissue.

  • In order to select the effective herbicides on polyethylene film mulching culture of galic (Allium sativum L) for weed control in early and low temperature condition, several experiments were conducted at the Chungbuk Provincial Office of Rural Development from 1978 to 1982. The dominated weed in the open field was Chenopodium album (98.1%), and there were many Rvrippa globosas (39.7%), and Dtgitaria sanguinalis (34.3%) in the polyethylene film mulching culture. Effective herbicides in polyethylene film culture were alachlor EC, pendimethalin EC, oxyfluorfen EC, and acifluorfen EC. After the 15th May, metabenzthiazuron WP and prometryne WP for the gramineous weeds were effective. There was a little chemical injury on acifluorfen EC application, but not another influence on the yield. With the effective herbicides application in the polyethylene film mulching culture, yield (22-23%) and profits (26.84) to the nonmuiching culture were increased. Increase of yield (20%) and profits (56%) in black opaque polyethylene film mulching culture compared with the conventional culture was possible.

  • Some derivatives of 3-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-1-methyl urea were synthesized by reaction of methyl isocyanate with 2-aminobenzothiazole derivatives prepared by thiocyanation of various substituted anilines. The compounds synthesized were identified by IR, NMR and mass spectra as 3-(5-methyl benzothiazol-2-yl)-1-methyl urea, 3-(5,6-dimethyl benzothiazol-2-yl)-1-methyl urea, 3-(6-ethyl benzothiazol-2-yl)-1-methyl urea, 3-(6-methoxy benzothiazol-2-yl)-1-methyl urea, 3-(6-chloro benzothiazol-2-yl)-1-methyl urea, and 3-(5, 6-dichloro benzothiazol-2-yl)-1-methyl urea. These compounds were subjected to the test for pre-emergence herbicidal activity in the pots with wettable powder formulation. All of these compounds showed pre-emergence herbicidal activity on the grasses (Digitaria adscendens HENR and Setaria viridis P. BEAUV) and broad-leaf weeds (Portulaca oleraces L. and Chenopodium album L.) at the dosage of 800g a.i. per 10a. Of the 6 compounds, 3-(6-ethyl benzothiazol-2-yl)-1-methyl urea showed the highest herbicidal effect on both the grasses and broad-leaf weeds. Even at the rate of 50g a.i. per 10a, this compound inhibited the growth of grasses, selectively.

  • Seungbong Island is situated about 100km away Inchon Port in the western sea of the Korean Peninsula. Field investigations were conducted for two days each from June 30 through July 1, 1981 and from August 20 through 21, 1981. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Plants growing in this island consist of a total of 193 species (70 families, 151 genera, 170 species, 22 varieties and 1 forma). Pinus thunbergii was confirmed to be the dominant species. The natural degree observed in this island was high, as a whole. The coefficient of ferny plants (Pte-Q) is 0.95, lower than grass. Atractylodes japonica Koidz., Miscanthus sinensis Anders. var. purpurascense Rendle, and Rhododendron mucronulatum Turz. are distributed mainly on the forest bed of Pinus thunbergii. The poor distribution of Chenopodium album var. centrorubrum Makino, Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv., Amaranthus mangostanus Linne is considered attributable to the phenomenon of allellopathy caused by a chemical substance secreted from the leaves of Pinus thunbergii. The component ratio of species in this island is lower than that of other islands due probably to the small area of arable land and grassland. The poor growth of plants in the forest of Pinus thunbergii, the dominant species in this island, seems to be attributed to the low relative light intensity of the forest. Seaside plants consisting of a total of 7 species were distributed mainly in the vicinity of sandy beaches. Naturalized plants comprising a total of 11 species were relatively diversified in the number of species.

  • A 2-year field experiment was conducted to determine the influence of early and late soybean (Clycine max Merr) seeding times on competitive relationships between soybeans and annual weeds. Soybeans were planted on May 20 and June 20. Durations of weed competition and weed control were 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks after planting sad for full growing season. Dominant weeds were Portulaca oleracia, Centipeda minima, Rorippa cantonienais, Chenopodium album, Acalypha australis, Echinochloa crusgalli, and Digitaria sanguinalis. The dry weight of weeds increased with extended competition, especially at early seeding time of soybeans. Soybean yields were decreased as duration of weed competition was extended. More severe yield reduction occurred at late-planted soybeans with early stage weed competition but at early-planted soybeans when weeds competed with soybeans for a 2 weeds and full growing season. The dry weight of weeds emerged after weeding was decreased at early and late seeding times of soybeans as duration of weed control was prolonged. Soybean yields decreased with shortening duration of weed control end this trend of yield reduction was slightly more remarkable at late-planted soybeans than at early-planted soybeans. Late-planted soybeans were required longer than 6 weeks of weed control period to achieve maximum yield as compared to early-planted soybeans.

  • This experiment was carried out to establish effective weed control system in the cultivation of Coix lachryma-jobi L. The effect of annual weeds artificially transplanted on the growth of Coix lachryma-jobi L. were that the higher the density of weeds, the lower the yield considerably by reducing number of grains and tillers per plant. Among four weeds of Echinochloa crusgalli galli P. BEAUV., Digitaria sanguinalis $S_{COPOL}$., Chenopodium album L., and Portulaca oleracea L., weed of Portulaca oleracea L. reduced adlay yield most by 182.6kg/10a and it was judged to be the most injurious weed to adlay production. Among four weed control systems, which are one herbicide treatment, one herbicide treatment + one cultivating work with cultivator, two times cultivating work with cultivator and two times hand-weeding, the control system of 'one herbicide treatment + one cultivating work with cultivator' showed the lowest amount of weed growth by 7.34 weeds per $m^2$ in comparison with control plot of 35.00 weeds per $m^2$. Among four weed control systems, the system of 'two times hand-weeding' had much more amount of light penetration in adlay canopy with 791.9 mol than any other systems.

  • Herbicidal effects of alachlor to peanuts were observed under different formulations (granule containing 5.0% a.i. and emulsifiable concentrate containing 43.7% a.i.) and levels (granule with 3 and 6kg/l0a and emulsion with 300㏄/l0a) with the transparent polyethylene (P.E.) film mulching. Formulations and levels of alachlor did not affect emergence ratio, time of emergence and flowering, and early growth of peanuts such as the number of leaves and branches, length of branches; and shoot dry weight at 20 and 40 days after planting, but early growth was enhanced by P.E. film mulching. At harvest, weed dry weight was positively correlated with length of branches, but negatively correlated with the number of branches and shoot dry weight. Acalyphu australis and Chenopodium album were not effectively controlled by the application of alachlor and growth of C. album was retarded under P.E. film mulching. Portulaca oleracea and Digitaria sanguinalis were effectively controlled by alachlor, but they were not affected by P.E. film mulching. At harvest, D. sanguinalis, A. australis, and Echinochloa crus galli were predominant weeds in all treatments; persistence of alachlor may not be long enough to control even sensitive weeds to alachlor such as D, sanguinalis in the field of peanuts of which canopy development was relatively slow. Weed dry weight at harvest was negatively correlated with the number of pods and grain yield of peanuts. Among the yield components only the number of nods per plant was positively correlated with grain yield. Hana weeding after July 1 increased grain yield of Peanuts even in alchlor applied plots.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the important weed occurring in orchard and to establish on effective control method using combination of non-selective foliar applied herbicide followed by soil treated herbicide. In terms of quantity, Calysregia hederacea, Artemisia princeps, Ixeris chinensis, Cephalonopios segetum, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Setaria viridis, Chenopodium album, Trifolium repens, Digitarta sanguinalis in order were observed to be the most important weeds in May, In July the most dominant weeds were D. sanguinalis, Setaria viridis, Amaranthus lividus, Portulaca oleracea, Polygonum hydropiper, Acalypha australis, Artemlsia prtnceps, Miscanthus sinensis in order, showing D. sanguinalis to be the dominant species. D. sanguinalis was one single dominant species till autumn, followed by A. lividus, P. oleracea, A. australis. Simpson's index, 0.159 obtained in May just before herbicide application increased to 0.253 in July and again decreased to 0.233 in Sept. in the oxyfluorfen treated plot, meaning that no specific weed species were dominant, while in the untreated plot, D. saguinalis was relatively single dominant species, showing Simpson's index, 0.540 and this trend was mainained till autumn. The most effective herbicide to control D. sanguinalis and other annuals was oxyfluorfen at 0.47kg a.i./ha. when applied at preemergence treatment, showing more than 80% control of them for 65 days. The results suggest that paraquat at 32/ha (prod.) as the foliar application followed by oxyfluorfen 0.47kg a.i./ha applied as the preemergence at one week after paraquat treatment can maintain the clean orchard more than 65 days, showing one of the promising and applicable control system in orchard.
