  • The purpose of this research was to analyze and improve the experiment, observing the color change under compression on the equilibrium of $2NO_2\;{\rightleftarrow}\;N_2O_4$ system, described in high school and general chemistry textbooks. Chemistry textbooks described that the reddish brown color got lighter on the compression of $2NO_2\;{\rightleftarrow}\;N_2O_4$ system. This misinterpretation was due to no consideration of $NO_2$ concentration increase by the volume decrease. In order to propose a correct interpretation, the changes of color and temperature on compression were quantitatively measured and compared with theoretical studies. In addition, an improved experiment, excluding the effect of $NO_2$ concentration increase, was proposed to observe only the color change of the net equilibrium shift.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve the problems of the voltaic cell described in the science textbooks of secondary schools. For this purpose, the contents of science textbooks which are related to the voltaic cell were analyzed and the problems which were not explained clearly by theorems were tried to be explained by experiments, and lastly sug-gestions were made toward the improvements regarding the voltaic cell in the science textbooks. The findings are that there are problems on the ways of ensuring whether the voltaic cell operates properly as a chemical battery, on the explanation of why the hydrogen bubbles form at the zinc electrode, on the cell potential, on the unification of the electrode terminology used, and on the mention of the current. Solutions to the problems except the cell potential were suggested. According to the experiment, the theoretical potential was calculated by considering the potentials of redox reactions at the two electrodes of the cell and by taking into account the characteristics of the electrodes such as the work function, ionization energy, stan-dard reduction potential, and electronegativity. The cell potential of the voltaic cell is explained by several factors. In the improved version of the textbook's introduction section to the voltaic cell, it is necessary to describe the voltaic cell his-torically.For the conceptual section, it should be explained in terms of the Daniel cell.

  • This study surveyed 2nd graders of B high school and 1st graders of A university in Gyeongnam on factors such as behavior control and interaction in non-face-to-face classes, easy or difficult concepts presented in chemistry I and general chemistry textbooks. Based on the results of the survey, the effect of changes in the difficulty level of concepts presented in chemistry I and general chemistry and changes in class types (face-to-face and non-face-to-face) on students' academic achievement by level was compared and analyzed. In the face-to-face class, the average score between the first and second semesters was similar according to the change in the difficulty of the concepts presented in chemistry I and general chemistry. In the non-face-to-face class, the average score of chemistry I in the second semester was quite low, and the average score of general chemistry was rather high. In non-face-to-face classes, the average score of chemistry I in the second semester of low-level students was significantly lowered due to changes in the difficulty of the concept and changes in class types on academic achievement by level. In the case of 10% of students at the lower level, the academic achievement of chemistry I decreased in both the second semester regardless of the changes in the difficulty level of concepts and the changes in class types.

  • This study investigated high school student and chemistry teacher perceptions on the effect of water vapor in the air on evaporation and boiling of water by a questionnaire. In science textbooks evaporation and the boiling of water are related to the vaporization concept, boiling is related to vapor pressure and air pressure, and vapor pressure is related to the vapor concept in the air. High school student and chemistry teacher perceptions on these linkages were compared. Science textbooks were also analyzed for reasons behind these diverse perceptions. Results revealed that a majority of students conceptualized that vapor in the air was related to evaporation and boiling, but were unable to distinguish the evaporation phenomena at the macroscopic level and the evaporation of water molecules at the microscopic level. They also thought that vapor in the air affected vapor pressure and boiling. Although the percentage of teacher scientific conception was higher, a great number of teachers had diverse perceptions on evaporation and boiling just as students had. Common explanations of evaporation and boiling phenomena in science textbooks were at the macroscopic level. Moreover, there were few connections of concepts even if the explanations were at the microscopic level.

  • This study investigated the perceptions of the relationship among the three acid-base models of chemistry teachers. In addition, we examined how the perception of the relationship between models affected on the interpretation of concepts in each model. To investigate teachers' perceptions and interpretations, a questionnaire and interviews were conducted for 24 chemistry teachers. As results, most of the chemistry teachers recognized the three models as cumulative extension relationships. The perceptions were related to the contents of textbooks. The perception of the relationship of these models influenced on interpretations of the models' acid-base concept. In this study, we suggested that science teachers need to be aware of diverse models' roles.
