In order to determine the most appropriate recycling line to treat old corrugated container (OCC) to substitute unbleached kraft pulp (UKP) for the manufacture of kraft paper, three recycling lines were evaluated in pilot scale tests. The recycling line consisting of kneading, flotation, washing, dispersion and screening steps was able to produce pulp with acceptable appearance. Kneading was shown to be more efficient treatment to reduce specks than dispersion. In addition, 0.2 mm slot screen was very effective to remove specks. Severe damages on fiber morphology such as shortening of fiber and formation of fines were not observed during mechanical treatments such as kneading and dispersion. Most of strength properties of the kraft paper produced with the recycled pulp were found to be slightly increased after treated in the recycling lines.

TFormic acid-hydrogen peroxide (or performic acid) pulping process needs milder reaction condition than other chemical pulping process. Two-step formic acid-hydrogen peroxide pulping process can produce the chemical pulp with similar pulp yield and lignin content compared with soda-anthraquinone process. Formic acid-hydrogen peroxide pulp can be produced less xylan content than other alkaline pulps, which favor for dissolving pulp production. Formic acid-hydrogen peroxide pulp showed better response beating than soda-anthraquinone(AQ) pulps with reaching target freeness with less beating. Also, formic acid-hydrogen peroxide pulp had better tensile index at similar freeness level compared with soda-AQ pulps.

Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) attacked pine was evaluated for pulp quality, chemical and physical properties, and bleachability. Chemical analyses showed that the dehydroabietic acid and total acetone extractives content were higher in the year 3 (grey) attacked MPB chips and lower in the year 5 (grey) attacked MPB chips as compared to a typical SPF (spruce/pine/fir) reference. Lignin and carbohydrate content of the MPB wood chips were comparable to the SPF. Similarly, there was little difference in kappa number, pulp yield and liquor consumption between the 3 and 5 year MPB attacked wood. Likewise there was no significant difference in the resulting tear strength, burst, or tensile strength. There appeared to be an improved bleaching response in the MPB attacked pulp as compared to the SPF reference, but this was accompanied by a slightly lower bleached pulp yield and higher bleach filtrate COD and solids content.

This study was carried out to acquire basic data necessary for the use of rice-straw chemical pulp. It investigated the proper bleaching conditions when rice-straw chemical pulps(alkaline sulfite-Na2S2O4 pulp) were bleached with the various kinds of bleaching agents. And physical properties of bleached pulps were tested. The results of this study were as follows; 1, The proper conditions of chlorine sequence were determined to be 4% concentration of chlorine 25$^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 50 minutes of reaction time. 2. For calcium hypochlorite sequence the proper conditions of chemical concentration reac-tion temperature and reaction time were 3% 25$^{\circ}C$ and 20 minutes respectively. 3. For chlorine dioxide sequence the proper conditions were 1% concentration of chlorine dioxide 70$^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 2hr. of reaction time. 4. The proper conditions of hydrogen peroxide sequence were 1.5% concentration of hydro-gen peroxide 70$^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 1hr. of reaction time respectively. 5. When the rice-straw chemical pulp were bleached with four kinds of bleaching agents methioned above in the proper conditions respectively brightnesses were the order of chlorine dioxide calcium hypochlorite, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide. And strengthes of pulps bleached with chlorine dioxide and hydrogen peroxide were higher than those of pulps bleached with other bleaching agents.
The selection of suitable delignification conditions and optimization of process variables is crucial to the successful operation of chemical pulping processes. Soda pulping of Carpolobia lutea was investigated, as an alternative raw material for pulp and paper production. The process was optimized under the influence of three operational variables, namely, temperature, time and concentration of cooking liquor. Equations derived using a second - order polynomial design predicted the pulp yield and lignin dissolution with errors less than 8% and 11% respectively. The maximum variations in the pulp yield using a second order factorial design was caused by changes in both time and alkali concentration. Optimum pulp yield of 43.87% was obtained at low values of the process variables. The selectivity of lignin dissolution was independent of the working conditions, allowing quantitative estimations to be established between the pulp yield and residual lignin content within the range studied.

Paper mills use and discharge lots of water. And so now the papermaking industry could be classified into major water consuming industry In order to analyze the process water network and to establish the mass, water balance of duplex board mill, computer aided simulation was made using water pinch method. Based on the pinch analysis results, reuse of process water, after regenerating by microfilter as much as $140\;m^3/hr$, could be suggested without significant accumulation of contaminants in process water. According to this suggestion about $3000\;m^3/day$ of recycled process water could be sub stituted by regenerated water and consequently $30\%$ of energy cost is expected to be reduced.

A new technique for recycling process water was developed in order to reduce the calcium hardness of the closed OCC recycling system. Calcium ions present in the white water were precipitated as calcium carbonate by a reaction with sodium carbonate and the CaCO$_3$precipitates were easily removed from the system by a dissolved air flotation(DAF) method. After the DAF stage, CO$_2$-gas was purged into the water because the pH of Na$_2$CO$_3$-treated white water was reduced to neutral by CO$_2$gas. Since CaCO$_3$precipitate tends to stick onto the fine fiber surface and then is selectively removed from the water, a proper amount of suspended solid in the process water acts as an important factor in deciding the removal efficiency. By the application of Na$_2$CO$_3$addition - DAF - CO$_2$purging to the short circulated white water the calcium hardness was significantly reduced by 92% and more. The removal of calcium ions with fine fibers led to drainage improvement, reduction of fresh water consumption, and enhanced efficiency of wet-end chemicals.
A xylanase was purified from a commercial crude xylanase, Pulpzyme HC, and used for the bleaching of kraft pulp in the absence or in the presence of nonionic surfactants, Tween 20, Tween 80, and Igepal C930. The purified xylanase has a molecular weight of 23,500 as determined by a reducing SDS-PAGE. Tween 20 was most effective to enhance the efficiency of the enzymatic bleaching of kraft pulp by xylanase.

In this study, effects of kneading treatment on the properties of hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP), softwood bleached kraft pulp (SwBKP) and hardwood bleached chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp (HwBCTMP) were elucidated with a laboratory two-shaft kneader. Kneading treatment was performed at 30% (w/w) of pulp concentration and the number of passes through the kneader was adjusted from 0 to 10 passes. Then, changes in properties of pulp fibers were evaluated. It was found that fiber characteristics were influenced by kneading treatment. Fiber length was decreased with kneading while other morphological properties such as fiber width, curl and kink became increased as the number of passes through the kneader increased from 0 to 5 passes. The magnitude of changes in the morphological properties of softwood chemical pulp was the largest, followed by hardwood chemical pulp. The morphological properties of HwBCTMP were little influenced by kneading treatment. Swelling of fiber measured by WRV was increased with kneading except of HwBCTMP.

Deinking is a series of unit operations designed to detach ink from cellulose fibers and separate the dispersed ink from the pulp slurry. Deinking chemicals are process aids that enable expensive mill equipment used in these unit operations to operate more efficiently. This paper presents an overview of ONP deinking efficiency with cellulolytic enzymes and synthetic collector in low alkalinity process. The deinking efficiency of old news print even in low alkalinity condition was enhanced with enzyme contained complex agent. The brightness of deinked pulp was increased with less residual ink particles and yield of deinked pulp was improved compared to the deinked pulp of conventional alkaline method.
