Impedance Imaging of Binary-Mixture Systems with Regularized Newton-Raphson Method

  • Impedance imaging for binary mixture is a kind of nonlinear inverse problem, which is usually solved iteratively by the Newton-Raphson method. Then, the ill-posedness of Hessian matrix often requires the use of a regularization method to stabilize the solution. In this study, the Levenberg-Marquredt regularization method is introduced for the binary-mixture system with various resistivity contrasts (1:2∼1:1000). Several mixture distribution are tested and the results show that the Newton-Raphson iteration combined with the Levenberg-Marquardt regularization can reconstruct reasonably good images.

Pervaporation Separation of Water-Isopropyl Alcohol Mixtures Using PVA/PAN Hollow Fiber Composite Membranes (PVA/PAN 중공사 복합막을 이용한 IPA수용액의 투과증발분리)

  • Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution containing the glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinking agent was coated onto the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hollow fiber membrane as the supporter. Pervaporation experiments were carried out to characterize the prepared PVA/PAN composite membrane for water-isopropyl alcohol mixture. The flux and separation factor were measured at 30, 50, $90^{\circ}C$ for the feed mixture of aqueous 85 wt% IPA solution with varying the reaction temperature and composition of coating solutions. Typically the flux showed 1,870 $g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ at $90^{\circ}C$ feed mixture and the coating concentration of 3.5 wt% and the highest separation factor of 804 was obtained at $30^{\circ}C$ feed mixture and the coating concentration of 7 wt% as well.

  • Chemical mixtures of components, each of which are present at less than guidance concentrations, may be hazardous due to additivity, interactions, or both. Toxicological interactions may increase the health hazard above what would be expected from an assessment of each component singly, or all components additively. So chemical mixture are a particular issue in public health. There are several approach to assess whether there are additivity or interaction in assessing toxicological effects, such as, components-based approach, physiologically-based pharmacokinetic /pharmacodynamic(PBPK/PD) models, hazard index method, and weight-of evidence method. If we consider interaction or additivity effects in assessing the health effects of chemcial mixtures, we can get more accurate information about toxicological effects and dose-response relationship in chemical mixtures.

  • Monodisperse micron-sized polystyrene (PS) spheres were successfully obtained using a single stage soap-free emulsion method in aqueous media mixed with ethanol (co-solvent) containing NaCI as the electrolyte. The optimum conditions for preparing the monodisperse PS microspheres, using soap-free emulsion polymerization in a water/ethanol mixture with an electrolyte, were studied. The presence of the co-solvent and electrolyte controlled the particle dispersion stability during the polymerization. The microspheres formed using PS, with a weight-average diameter of $2.6{\mu}m$, coefficient of variation of 5.3% and zeta potential of -15.1 eV, were successfully obtained in the presence of 0.1 wt% NaCI, 10 wt% monomer, 0.1 wt% initiator and 95/5 (g/g) of a water/ethanol mixture reacted at $70^{\circ}C$ for 24 h.

Effect of Bordeaux Mixture on Control of Rice Leaf Blast (벼 유기재배에서 석회보르도액을 이용한 벼 잎도열병 방제 효과)

  • Recently organic farming practice of rice has been emerged in Korea, but one of the major limiting factor is the no effective environmental-friendly agro-materials to control major plant diseases. Bordeaux mixture has been used effectively as a preventive agro-chemical. The aim of this study was to investigate efficacy of Bordeanux mixture on control of rice blast caused by Magnaporthe grisea which is one of the disruptive rice diseases in world-wide. In greenhouse experiment, pre-treatment of 6-6 type of Bordeaux mixture before inoculation of spore suspension of M. grasea showed 71 % of control value. In field experiment, preventive applications of 4-8 and 6-6 types of Bordeaux mixture showed over 71 % of the control value. Chemical injury on rice leaves were not found in the application concentrations of all types of Bordeaux mixture, but observed in applications of Bordeaux mixtures between 30 and 100 diluted concentrations. This results indicate Bordeaux mixture can be used as an effective environmental-friendly agro-chemical to control rice blast disease in the field.

Density Measurement of Liquid Mixture and Estimation of Excess Molar Volume by A Cubic Equation of State (액체혼합물의 밀도 측정과 3차 상태방정식에 의한 과잉 몰부피의 예측)

  • The density of polar-nonpolar liquid mixtures composed of methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE) and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, and the density of polar-polar liquid mixture of MTBE and MEK were measured by densitometer at 278.15 K, 288.15 K and 298.15 K, respectively. The excess molar volume of the binary systems calculated from the measured density was shown good agreement with the calculated one by the cubic Peng-Robinson- Stryjek-Vera (PRSV) equation of state together with Huron-Vidal mixing rule and it confirmed that the cubic PRSV equation of state could be used in the molar volume calculation of polar mixture.

  • Waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUD) were synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polycarbonate diol (PCD) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as starting materials. Subsequently, polyurethane-acrylic hybrid solutions were prepared by reacting the PUD with different types of acrylate monomers, such as HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate):MMA (methyl methacrylate), HEMA:BA (butylacrylate), HEMA:BMA (butyl methacrylate), HEMA:HEA (2-hydroxyethyl acrylate), HEMA:PETA (pentaerytritol triacrylate) mixture. Also, the effects of acrylate types on the chemical resistance and the abrasion resistance of polyurethane-acrylic hybrid solutions were investigated. The test results showed that the HEMA:MMA mixture had the strongest chemical resistance, while the HEMA:PETA mixture had the strongest abrasion resistance among several types of acrylate mixtures.

  • A novel membrane separation process for the separation of liquid mixture is Pervaporation.   • In this study, it was tried to deposit diamond films from a mixture of CH4 and H2 by the microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition(MWCVD). The MWCVD process was designed and set up from the 2.45GHz microwave generator. And the diamond film was successfully deposited on silicon wafers from the mixture of methane and hydrogen. The microstructures of the deposited diamond films were studied by using the following deposition variables : (a) methane concentration(0.6-10%), (b) reaction pressure(10-100torr), and (c) the substrate temperature(450-76$0^{\circ}C$).
