  • The output characteristics of HF and DF lasers were compared theoretically. The simulation code shows the good agreement with the experimental results well. As results, the effect of chain termination reaction in $F_2$ rich mixture is larger than that of $SF_6$ rich mixture in HF and DF lasers.

  • Characteristics and applications of three major types of lasers are discussed. They are chemical-metabolic, thermal destructive, and nonthermal mechanical lasers. The thermal destructive lasers ($CO_2$, Argon, and Nd:YAG) are especially explained in detail with regard to energy density, wavelength, fluence, stage of thermal destruction, and advantages of laser surgery. Excimer and Q-swiched lasers are discussed as nonthermal mechanical ones. Delivery system, optical fiber and articulated arm, is also discussed. Finally, recent advancements of medical laser are included in the conclusion.

  • We explore the evolution of metal plasma generated by high laser irradiances and its effect on the surrounding air by using shadowgraph images after laser pulse termination and X-ray diffraction (XRD) of aluminum plasma ablated by a high-power laser pulse (>1000 mJ/pulse) and oxygen from air. Hence, the formation of laser-supported detonation and combustion processes has been investigated. The essence of this paper is in observing the initiation of chemical reaction between the ablated aluminum plasma and oxygen from air by the high-power laser pulse (>1000 mJ/pulse) and in conducting a quantitative comparison of the chemically reactive laser-initiated waves with the classical detonation of an exploding aluminum (dust) cloud in air. The findings in this work may lead to a new method of initiating detonation from a metal sample in its bulk form without any need to mix nanoparticles with oxygen for initiation.

  • Theoretical analysis of DF-$CO_2$ transfer chemical laser is performed through simple kinetic model consisting of 30 chemical reactions. In this model, we calculate the power theoretically by solving the rate equations, which are related to the $D_2\;+\;F_2$ chain reaction and the DF-$CO_2$ resonance energy transfer, combined with both the gain processes and the stimulated emission processes. The calculated powers are verified with previously reported results in good agreements. The output energy rises linearly with the increase in pressure, and the duration time of output pulse show the inverse dependence on pressure. Through the detailed calculation of temperature and concentrations of reactants as a function of time, it is found that the deactivation processes of DF(v) can be neglected in low pressure, but they have to be considered in high pressure. From the parametric study for the variation on [$D_2]/[F_2$] and [$CO_2]/[D_2\;+\;F_2$] at several constant total pressure, the optimum lasing conditions are found to be in a range of 1/3 to 1 and 2 to 4, respectively.

  • The chemical laser system makes use of a diffusion type chemical reaction, so a fuel is separated from an oxidant by some gap, which is base in this system. In this study, the effects of base on the population inversion that is one of the most important things in the chemical laser system are numerically investigated. The results are discussed by comparison with three cases of base sizes; 0.4mm, 0.8mm and 1.6mm. Major results reveal that the range of population inversion also increases almost linearly in the transitions; DF$^{(2)}$ -DF$^{(1)}$ and DF$^{(3)}$ -DF$^{(2)}$ as the length of base becomes longer.

  • Laser surface polishing is a polishing method for improving surface roughness using an integrated laser beam. Using a laser for surface polishing can improve the surface condition without physical contact or chemical action. Laser polishing has mainly been used to polish the surface of diamond or optical articles, such as lenses and glasses. Recently, diverse studies on laser polishing for metals have been conducted. The analytic study of laser surface polishing has been conducted with experimental trials for comparison, so that the proper conditions for laser polishing can be recommended. In this study, laser surface polishing was simulated in order to predict the heat-affected zone on the die steel depending on the power of the pulsed laser. The simulated results were verified by comparing them to those of the experimental trials. Through this study, therefore, the application of FEM to the selection of appropriate laser conditions could be possible.
