  • The deterioration rate of concrete structures in urban area is accelerated due to rapid urbanization and environmental pollution. Repair materials and methods newly introduced in Korea should be investigated whether they are appropriate for the urban environment in Korea. The creek concrete structures are exposed in severe environmental condition than others. Based on these background in mind, the study is focused on evaluation of performance on repair materials used to rehabilitate creek concrete structures. To evaluate the performance of repair materials, four kinds of repair materials were selected based on polymer emulsion. This experimental study was conducted on fundamental performance such as setting time, compressive strength, bending strength, bonding strength, thermal expansion coefficient, and durability performance such as chloride diffusion, carbonation, chemical attack, and steel corrosion rate. On the basis of this study, the optimal repair material which is proper to the environment condition can be selected and service life of creek concrete structures can be extended. As a result, the life cycle cost can be reduced and the waste of material resources will be cut down.

  • By the high-temperature pad conditioning process: The slurry residues in pores and grooves of the polishing pad were clearly removed. These clear pores and enlarged grooves made the slurry attack the oxide surface. The changed slurry properties by high-temperature pad conditioning process made the oxide surface hydro-carbonate to be removed easily.

  • Chitosan is a useful natural polymer material in many application fields such as biomaterials, water-treatment, agriculture, medication, and food science. However, the poor solubility limits its application. In this study, the effects of radiation on chitosan were investigated using gamma ray and electron beam irradiation. The chemical structure and molecular weight analysis show similar degradation effects of chitosan powder in both gamma ray and electron beam irradiation. However, the radiation irradiated chitosan in $H_2O$ has a lower molecular weight, since the hydroxyl radicals attack the glycosidic bonds. This effect is more clearly shown in the electron beam irradiation results.

  • Low-carbon eco-friendly precast concrete (PC) box structure has been recently was developed as an low-cost infrastructure of near-surface transit system. The concrete of PC box was manufactured by industrial byproducts such as ground granulated blast furnace (GGBF) slag, flyash and rapid-cooling electric arc furnace (EAF) oxidizing slag, its mechanical property and durability were estimated in this study. Based on the mechanical and durability tests, it is found that low-carbon eco-friendly concrete shows high initial compressive strength, more than 90% of design strength (35MPa), and high resistance to salt-attack, chemical- attack and freeze-thaw. Therefore, low-carbon eco-friendly PC box concrete technology is expected to contribute to the railway with low environmental impact.

  • In order to use limestone powder as a material for concrete, the mechanical and durability characteristics of cement matrices manufactured by varying the substitution rate were evaluated. In general, limestone powder did not contribute to the cement hydration reaction, so as a result of the compressive strength test of cement mortar using it, the compressive strength decreased as the substitution rate increased. However, as a result of evaluating the durability performance of cement mortar using limestone powder, such as chloride ion penetration resistance, carbonation resistance, and chemical attack resistance, small particles of limestone powder showed superior results compared to the unsubstituted control mortar due to the micro-filler effect of filling the fine pores inside the cement matrix. Therefore, limestone powder is expected to be used as an effective method for improving the durability of concrete. In this study, the durability was evaluated by changing the mixing amount of limestone powder to 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, and 15 %, but it is judged that it is necessary to study in more detail the effect on the durability by changing the end and mixing amount of limestone powder to various levels in the future.

  • The reactions of semicarbazide hydrochloride with aliphatic and alicyclic ketones were studied kinetically at 15, 25, 35 and 45$^{\circ}C$ in 20% ethanol solution buffered at pH 2.9. The rate of cyclohexanone semicarbazone formation is 5.5 times as fast as that of cyclopentanone semicarbazone, while 3-pentanone semicarbazone is 4.7 times as slow as that of 2-pentanone, The activation energy of cyclohexanone, 2-pentanone, 2 hexanone, cyclopentanone, 4-methyl-2-pentanone and 3-pentanone semicarbazone formation are calculated 5.08, 7.52, 8.79, 9.59, 9.49, 11.59, respectively. It is concluded from the effect of ionic strength that the reaction is affected by not ion but neutral molecules being progressed hydrogen bond between oxygen atom of carbonyl group and hydrogen atom of acid-catalyst and concerted nucleophilic attack of free base on the carbonly compound. Dependence on pH of the rate of 2-pentanone semicarbozone formation is linear relationship below pH 4.60 and above pH 5.60. As a result of studing citric acid catalysis, second order constants increase linearly with citric acid concentration. As the catalyst concentration is varied from 0.025 to 0.10 mol/1 at pH 2.90, the rate constants increase 1.4 times, but slight increase is observed at pH 5.60. Conclusively, the rate-determining step is formation of tetrahedral interemediate below pH 4.65 and dehydration between pH 5.60 and pH 7.11. It is concluded that the formation reaction of cyclohexanone semicarbazone is faster than cyclopentanone semicarbazone due to the steric strain in the process of forming tetrahedral intermediate.

  • Dipyridine-terminated polystyrenes and polybutadienes were synthesized by the chain endfunctionalization reaction of polystyryllithium (PSLi) and polybutadienyllithium (PBDLi) with di(2-pyridyl) ketone(DPK) using a living anionic polymerization method in the Ar-glove box. Living polymeric lithiums with low molecular weights (Mw=1000~2000 g/mol) were used to investigate the chain end-functionalization yield with DPK and the degree of coupling reaction by the attack of organolithium to the pyridine ring in the presence of TMEDA using GPC, $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$ analysis. DPK-terminated PBD exhibited much higher functionalization yield and less amount of coupling reaction compared with DPK-terminated PS. 86% functionalization yield with 9% degree of coupling was obtained when the PBDLi was added dropwise to DPK solution at room temperature. The functionalization yield was increased as the reaction temperature decreased, however, no LiCl effect was observed in this chain end-functionalization reaction with DPK.

  • Background: Plants are able to optimize defense responses induced by various herbivores, which have different feeding strategies. Local and systemic responses within a plant after herbivory are essential to modulate herbivore-specific plant responses. For instance, leaf-chewing herbivores elicit jasmonic acid signaling, which result in the inductions of toxic chemicals in the attacked leaf (tissue-specific responses) and also in the other unattacked parts of the plant (systemic responses). Root herbivory induces toxic metabolites in the attacked root and alters the levels of transcripts and metabolites in the unattacked shoot. However, we have little knowledge of the local and systemic responses against stem-boring herbivores. In this study, we examined the systemic changes in metabolites in the wild tobacco Nicotiana attenuata, when the stem-boring herbivore Trichobaris mucorea attacks. Results: To investigate the systemic responses of T. mucorea attacks, we measured the levels of jasmonic acid (JA), JA-dependent secondary metabolites, soluble sugars, and free amino acids in 7 distinct tissues of N. attenuata: leaf lamina with epidermis (LLE), leaf midrib (LM), stem epidermis (SE), stem pith (SP), stem vascular bundle (SV), root cortex with epidermis (RCE), and root vascular bundle (RV). The levels of JA were increased in all root tissues and in LM by T. mucorea attacks. The levels of chlorogenic acids (CGAs) and nicotine were increased in all stem tissues by T. mucorea. However, CGA was systematically induced in LM, and nicotine was systematically induced in LM and RCE. We further tested the resource allocation by measuring soluble sugars and free amino acids in plant tissues. T. mucorea attacks increased the level of free amino acids in all tissues except in LLE. The levels of soluble sugars were significantly decreased in SE and SP, but increased in RV. Conclusions: The results reveal that plants have local- and systemic-specific responses in response to attack from a stem-boring herbivore. Interestingly, the level of induced secondary metabolites was not consistent with the systemic inductions of JA. Spatiotemporal resolution of plant defense responses against stem herbivory will be required to understand how a plant copes with attack from herbivores from different feeding guilds.

  • Concrete structures built on reclaimed land are combined with chemical erosion such as chlorine and sulfate ions from seawater. Chloride attack deteriorates the performance of the structure by corroding reinforcing bars. In addition, the waste water treatment structure has a problem that the concrete is deteriorated by the sulfate generated inside. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics and chemical resistance of low heat cement concrete used in wastewater treatment structures constructed on reclaimed land were evaluated. As a result of the experiment, the target slump and air content were satisfied under all the mixing conditions. The slump of low heat cement (LHC) concrete was higher than that of ordinary portland cement (OPC) concrete, while the air content of LHC concrete was smaller than that of OPC concrete with the same mix proportion. As a result of compressive strength test, OPC concrete showed higher strength at younger age compared to 28 days. In contrast, LHC concrete exhibited higher strength than OPC concrete at the age of 56 days. As a result of chlorine ion penetration tests, LHC-B concrete showed chlorine ion penetration resistance performance of the "very low" level at the age of 56 days. As a result of chemical resistance evaluation, when the LHC concrete is applied without epoxy treatment, chemical resistance is improved by about 18% compared to OPC concrete. In testing chemical resistance, the epoxy coated concrete exhibited less than 5% strength reduction when compared to sound concrete.
