  • Recentadvancesin '-omics ' technologies enable us to discover more diverse disease- relevant target proteins, which encourages us to find out more target-specific novel lead compounds as new drug candidates. Therefore, high-throughput screening (HTS) becomes an essential tool in this area. Among many HTS tools, in silico HTS is a very fast and cost-effective tool to try to derive a new lead compound for any new targets, especially when the target protein structures are known or readily modeled. • Most applications of polymers involve blends and mixtures of components including solvents, surfactants, copolymers, fillers, organic or inorganic functional additives, and various processing aids. These components provide unique properties of polymeric materials even beyond those tailored into the basic chemical structures. In addition, skillful processing extends the properties for even greater applications. The perennial challenge of polymer science is to understand and exploit the structure-processing-property interplay relationship. We are developing and demonstrating combinatorial methods and high throughput analysis as tools to provide this fundamental understanding.

  • This study redefined school health environment in Korea, especially inter-school environment, according to the comprehensive meaning of health. The scope of inter-school health environment was classified into physical environment, biological chemical environment, social environment, and mental. emotional environment. While the environment management was classified into safety management, hygiene management, and living management according to management method, These analytical tools will contribute to a better understanding of the scope of school health and will be an available resource in school health practice.

  • Two new abietane diterpenes with rearranged skeleton; aegyptinol and aegyptinone C; have been isolated and identified for the first time from the anti-microbial petroleum ether extract of the roots of Salvia aegyptiaca L. Their chemical structures have been elucidated by interpretation of the detailed 1D-and 2D-NMR spectra, as well as other spectroscopic tools. In addition, full assignment of $^{13}C-NMR$ of aegyptinone B was also conducted for the first time.

(Patrick, 1994). • Heteropoly compounds, H3PMo12O40, CsxH3-xPMo12O40, and vanadium containing heteropoly compound were characterized by Solid-state broad line 1H MAS NMR, 31P MAS NMR, and High Speed MAS 51V NMR spectroscopy of quadrupolar nuclei. The effects of calcination, dehydration, and the number of protons on the structure of heteropoly compounds were studied. The results of this study demonstrate that these Solid-state NMR techniques are very useful tools to study heteropoly compounds.

  • In this study, sensitizing dye was prepared by the reaction of 2-methyl-3-sulfopropyl-4, 5-naphthothiazolium(inner salt) with triethyl orthoformate in the presence of triethylamine. The product was identified by using various analytical tools such as Elemental analyzer, IR spectrophotometer, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, $^1H-NMR$ spectrometer, TGA and DSC. Therefore, it was concluded that naphthothiazolo carbocyanine dye can be used as red-sensitizing dye for the spectral sensitization of photographic emulsion.

  • The hazards of chemicals can be classified using classification criteria that are based on physical, chemical and ecotoxicological endpoints. These criteria may be developed be iteratively, based on scientific or regulatory processes. A number of national and international schemes have been developed over the past 50 years, and some, such as the UN Dangerous Goods system or the EC system for hazardous substances, are in widespread use. However, the unnecessarily complicated multiplicity of existing hazard classifications created much unnecessary confusion at the user level, and a recommendation was made at the 1992 Rio Earth summit to develop a globally harmonized chemical hazard classification and compatible labelling system, including material safety data sheets and easily understandable symbols, that could be used for manufacture, transport, use and disposal of chemical substances. This became the globally harmonized system for the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The developmental phase of the GHS is largely complete. Consistent criteria for categorizing chemicals according to their toxic, physical, chemical and ecological hazards are now available. Consistent hazard communication tools such as labelling and material safety data sheets are also close to finalizations. The next phase is implementation of the GHS. The Intergovernmental Forum for Chemical Safety recommends that all countries implement the GHS as soon as possible with a view to have the system fully operational by 2008. When the GHS is in place, the world will finally have one system for classification of chemical hazards.

  • Bromobenzene (BB) is well known hepatotoxicant. Also, BB is an industrial solvent that arouses toxicity predominantly in the liver where it causes centrilobular necrosis. BB is subjected to Cytochrome P450 mediated epoxidation followed by either conjugation with glutathione, enzymatic hydrolysis or further oxidation. In this study, we focused on BB-induced gene expression at non-hepatotoxic dose. Mice were exposed to two levels of BB, sampled at 24 h, and hepatic gene expression levels were determined to evaluate dose dependent changes. When examining the toxic dose of BB treated group in other previous studies, genes related to heat shock protein, oxidative stress, and drug metabolism are expressed. Compared to these results, our study, in which non-toxic dose of BB was administrated, showed similar patterns as the toxic conditions above. The purpose of the study was to select genes that showed changes in relation to the differing dose through confirmation of the difference within transcriptomic boundaries, but those that are not detected by the existing classic toxicology tools in non-hepatotoxic dose.

  • Here, we demonstrated the optimum design of pillar microstructure for efficient microdroplet merging. The microfluidic device mainly consisted of programmable microvalves and pillar microstructures. Based on the system, aqueous droplets were continuously generated at T-junction using actuating of integrated programmable microvalaves under the immiscible continuous fluid (mineral oil containing 0.5 wt% Span 80). The principle of merging process depended on the competitive correlation of hydraulic pressure of continuous phase and Laplace pressure of the droplet. We found that the design of the micropillars controls above two pressures. Finally, it was demonstrated that the microfluidic system could be able to efficient biochemical reaction. We expect that the microfluidic system is useful analytical or reaction tools in fundamental science, biotechnology, and chemical engineering.
