  • This study examined the chemical composition of A. blasiliensis and the chemical structural properties of an immuno-stimulating polysaccharide. The amino acids, free sugars, and organic acids by HPLC and fatty acids by GC were analyzed. The immuno-stimulating substance from A. blasiliensis was extracted with hot water and purified by ethanol precipitation. It underwent ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and gel filtration on Toyopearl HW 65F. Through GP-HPLC, the substance was found to be homogeneous. Its chemical structure was determined by $^{13}C-NMR$. Fatty acids, organic acids, and sugar alcohol composition consisted exclusively of linoleic acid, fumaric acid and mannitol, respectively. The amino acids were mainly glutamic acid, glycine, and arginine. By $^{13}C-NMR$ analysis, the immuno-stimulating substance was identified as ${\beta}-(1{\rightarrow}3)\;(1{\rightarrow}6)$-glucan, composed of a backbone with $(1{\rightarrow}3)$-linked D-glucopyranosyl residues branching a $(1{\rightarrow}6)$-linked D-glucopyranosyl residue. The ${\beta}$-glucan from A. blasiliensis showed pronounced immuno-stimulating activity on the antibody-production ability of B-lymphocytes by the hemolytic suspension assay. In these results, A. blasiliensis was estimated to have potent pharmacological properties and potential nutritional values.

  • From Neungsalli Temple located in Buyeo, ancient glass vessel fragments were discovered along with hundreds of glass beads. In this research, we used SEM-EDS to analyze glass vessel fragments and beads excavated from Neungsalli Temple. Then, we analyzed their chemical composition and examined their characteristics. In particular, we investigated a relationship between glass vessels from Neungsalli temple and Hwangnamdaechong (South tomb). The result of our experiment showed that the glass artifacts from Neungsalli temple were all soda glass. To be specific, the vessel fragments were soda-lime glass and spherical beads were high-alumina soda glass. Then, we compared glass vessel fragments from Neungsalli temple to glass vessels excavated from Hwangnamdaechong. Glass vessels from both sites turned out to be soda lime glass. We classified them further based on raw material used for soda - natron and marine plant ash.

  • Synthesis of Fe-Co/meso-HZSM5 catalyst, intended to be applied in Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reaction was investigated. The study emphasized the effect of desilication agents, NaOH and KOH, on the catalyst materials properties. Impregnation composition of active metal (Fe and Co) was also examined. HZSM-5, converted from ammonium ZSM-5 through calcination, was treated with NaOH and KOH for desilication, followed by impregnation with 10% metal loading. Fe composition in the initial mixture was varied at 10-50% from total composition. After impregnation, reduction was applied by flowing hydrogen gas at 400 ℃ for 10 hours. The use of KOH solution induced greater mesoporous volumes; however, it had a detrimental effect on zeolite crystal structure. NaOH solutions, on the other hand, increased mesopore area as high as 100%, indicated from surface area increase from 266.28 m2/g of HZSM-5, to 526.03 m2/g of NaOH-desilicated HZSM-5. In addition, the application of NaOH solution increased pore volume from 0.14 cc/g to 0.486 cc/g. Further, more Fe-Co alloys and less oxide of iron (Fe2O3) as well cobalt (Co3O4) had been commonly observed in the produced catalysts. The largest Fe-Co alloys could be found in 50Fe-50Co/HZSM-5

  • Objective: Objectives were to estimate energy and protein requirements of dairy crossbred steers, as well as to evaluate equations previously described in the literature (HH46 and CS16) to predict the carcass and empty body chemical composition of crossbred dairy cattle. Methods: Thirty-three Holstein×Zebu steers, aged 19±1 months old, with an initial shrunk body weight (BW) of 324±7.7 kg, were randomly divided into three groups: reference group (n = 5), maintenance level (1.17% BW; n = 4), and the remaining 24 steers were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 treatments. Treatments were: intake restricted to 85% of ad libitum feed intake for either 0, 28, 42, or 84 d of an 84-d finishing period. Results: The net energy and the metabolizable protein requirements for maintenance were 0.083 Mcal/EBW0.75/d and 4.40 g/EBW0.75, respectively. The net energy (NEG) and protein (NPG) requirements for growth can be estimated with the following equations: NEG (Mcal/kg EBG) = $0.2973_{({\pm}0.1212)}{\times}EBW^{0.4336_{({\pm}0.1002)}$ and NPG (g/d) = 183.6(±22.5333)×EBG-2.0693(±4.7254)×RE, where EBW, empty BW; EBG, empty body gain; and RE, retained energy. Crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE) chemical contents in carcass, and all the chemical components in the empty body were precisely and accurately estimated by CS16 equations. However, water content in carcass was better predicted by HH46 equation. Conclusion: The equations proposed in this study can be used for estimating the energy and protein requirements of crossbred dairy steers. The CS16 equations were the best estimator for CP and EE chemical contents in carcass, and all chemical components in the empty body of crossbred dairy steers, whereas water in carcass was better estimated using the HH46 equations.

  • In order to improve the hardness of commercial bone china, we suggested a chemical strengthening process and new glaze for its process. New glaze contained about two times more $Na_2O$ and $Al_2O_3$ and had a higher transition temperature than that of commercial frit. Chemical strengthening enhanced the hardness of the new glaze-coated bone china by over 30% compared to that of commercial product. The change of glaze composition influenced potassium ion diffusion distance and depth of strengthened layer during chemical treatment. After chemical strengthening of new glaze-coated bone china, the residual compressive stress inside the glaze was measured and found to be greater than 160 MPa.

  • One-dimensional coordination polymer of cadmium(II) complex, $[Cd(SCN)_2(C_4H_6N_2]_n$, has been prepared and characterized by X-ray single crystallography. Structure analysis reveals that each cadmium(II) atom is six-coordinated in distorted octahedral fashion with $CdS_2N_4$ composition. $CdS_2N_4$ composition contains two S and two N atoms from four thiocyanates and tow N atoms from two 4-methylimidazole ligands. Central cadmium(II) atoms are run in parallel to the a-axis and are doubly bridged with neighboring cadmium(II) atoms by the thiocyanate and isothiocyanate ligands. Thus, this complex has a one-dimensional polymer structure in which the 4-methylimidazole is in the trans conformation.

  • Poly(ethylene 2, 6-naphthalate-co-tetramethylene 2, 6-naphthalate) (PEN/PBN) copolymers were synthesized and studied by 13C NMR spectroscopy, DSC analysis and X-ray diffraction. A minimum in the melting point vs. composition curve was found at approximately 60 mol% tetramethylene 2, 6-naphthalate. The PEN/PBN copolymers were shown to be statistically random throughout the range of 1, 4-butanediol compositions. The melting point depression behavior of annealed PEN/PBN copolymers depended upon the sequence propagation probability, PS, which is suggested by indivisual crystal formation of two pure comonomers; that is, ethylene-naphthalate-ethylene, EE, and tetramethylene-naphthalate-tetramethylene, BB. However, it can be seen from the X-ray curve that the peaks of PEN/PBN copolymers appear from a crystal lattice which is governed only by the rich component between two different aliphatic units in the copolymer composition.

  • Cheju island is situated at about 90km south of southern most tip of the Korean peninsula. Its shape is an ellips with size of 80$\times$40$km^2$, and it is characterized by a symmetrical form whose peak is Mt. Halla (1950m). Major chemical composition of the rock samples from Manjang gul cave is determined by XRF using the fundamental parameter method consisting of fully auto quantitative analysis, semi quantitative analysis (order estimation) and group quantitative analysis. Judging from chemical composition ($SiO_2 = 53.07Wt% Fe_2 O_3=11.34Wt%, MgO=6.48Wt%, Na_2 O=3.07Wt%, K_2 O=1.05Wt%$), this rocks may belong to non alkalic basalt. K-Ar ages of two rocks samples from the Manjang gul cave are also determined. The discrepancy of K-Ar ages is found. They are 0.03Ma and 0.42Ma, respectively. This paper describes some problems experienced in dating young volcanic rocks and then discusses chemical composition, X-ray fluorescence analysis and the age of the formation of a lava tunnel such as Manjang gul cave in cheju Island.

  • An immersion-type on-line refractometer useful for the in-situ measurement of chemical composition and temperature is developed, and its performance is examined by applying the refractometer to known alcohol solution having concentrations between 0 vol. % and 25 vol. %. Because refractive index and temperature are measured simultaneously, it is possible to compensate the effect of temperature for fast and direct measurement. The outcome of composition measurement for the different concentrations of alcohol solution indicates that the device is suitable for the chemical composition measurement by yielding stable and reproducible reading.

  • The native oxide films were thermally and anodically formed on the n-GaP substrates grown by SSD method and measured this oxide thickness and the chemical composition and the electrical properties with formation condition. The chemical composition of themally oxidized GaP film was composed of mostly $GaPO_4$ at temperature below $800^{\circ}C$ and mostly $\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ above $800^{\circ}C$. But The chemical composition of anodically oxidized GaPfilm was composed of the mixture of $Ga_{2}O_{3}$ and $P_{2}O_{5}$. The barrier height of Al/oxide/n-Gap which was formed at $700^{\circ}C$ by thermal oxidation method were 1.10eV, 1.03eV in Current-Voltage measurement. Interface charge density were $4{\times}10^{12}q(C/cm^2)$ and $3{\times}10^{12}q(C/cm^2)$ in Capacitance-Voltage measurement respectively.
