An investigation of fauna and community of insects in Gotjawal Terrain, Jeju-do, had been conducted with a way of black light trap from July to September, 2005. The investigated insects were classified into 217 species, 75 families, and 11 orders respectively. Coleoptera that occupied 55.3 percent among them and was consisted of 120 species was the richest group and Hemiptera followed it. The density of Physopelta gutta was highest but Physopelta cincticollis was overall the dominant species in all sampling areas. The species diversity index was highest at Jocheon-Hamdeog Gotjawal in Jeju-do, while it was lowest in Gujwa-Sungsan Gotjawal. Clustering analysis revealed that the insect communities of four localities were grouped in only one cluster. Included in the species unreported in Jeju Island were Menida musiva and Pentatoma japonica in Hemiptera, Philonthus wuesthoffi in Coleoptera, and Phanerotoma flava in Hymenoptera.

A rotifer starin has been isolated from tide pools located near Sogwipo, Cheju Island and the effects of environmental factors (water temperature and salinity) and clonal differences have been examined with regard to size variation and cyclomorphosis. Adult female rotifers varied from 141.61 to $173.97 \mutextrm{m}$ in their mean lorica length under different rearing conditions in the laboratory and also had pointed anterior spines . Thus, this strain was classified as Brachionus rotundiformes. Mean lorica length tended to be smaller as rearing temperature increased although there were some exceptions. Statistical analysis indicated that lorica length was largely influenced by both clonal differences and rearing temperatures although the former as a genetic factor affected lorica length a little more than the latter did ; overall effect of salinity on lorica length was not statistically signicicant; furthermore, cyclomorphosis was also largely influenced by both clonal differences and rearing temperatures, but clonal differences as a genetic factor affected rotifer cyclomorphosis much more than temperature did.
Plasmodium spp. in domestic and wild birds are microscopic, intracellular parasitic protozoa within the blood cells and tissues cause avian malaria. A 17-month-old Magellan penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) with a clinical signs of anorexia, depression, and respiratory distress for 3 days was submitted to the Pathology Department of Veterinary Medicine, Cheju National University in October 2005. It was born and reared in the Jeju Island. Grossly, the liver was enlarged, pale and friable. The spleen was also enlarged with dark red coloration and friable. Histopathologically, the lesions in the liver were characterized by multifocal infiltration of macrophages and lymphocytes especially in perivascular regions. The schizonts of Plasmodium spp. contained up to 30 merozoites were found in numerous infiltrated mononuclear cells. Similarly, histiocytic cells were proliferated in red pulp of spleen and the schizonts were found in these cells. Numerous dark brown pigments were widely distributed in the liver and spleen. The result of the nested polymerase chain reaction clarified the causative agent of this case was Plasmodium spp.. This is the first report for the outbreak of avian malaria caused by Plasmodium spp. in a penguin that was born and reared in Jeju Island in Korea.
Antioxidative activities of Chlorophyta and Phaeophyta in Jeju Island were measured by superoxide anion ($O_2^{{\cdot}-}$), hydroxyl radical ($HO^{\cdot}$), hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and DPPH free radical scavenging assays. Methanolic and aqueous extracts of the seaweeds were prepared at both temperatures, higher (70$^{\circ}C$) and room temperature (20$^{\circ}C$), and screened for the construction of an extract bank from seaweeds in Jeju Island. A variety of extracts showed positive effect against reactive oxygen species (ROS). Especially, Sargassum thunbergii methanolic extract at 70$^{\circ}C$ (70ME, 97.41%), S. fulvellum methanolic extract at 20$^{\circ}C$ (20ME, 84.66%), Codium fragile aqueous extract at 70$^{\circ}C$ (70AE, 96.61%) and S. thunbergii 20ME (97.44%) exhibited the highest scavenging activities against $O_2^{{\cdot}-}$, $HO^{\cdot}$, $H_2O_2$ and DPPH free radicals, respectively. Total phenolic contents also examined but did not show a positive correlation with ROS scavenging abilities (except for a few extracts). These results indicate that further investigation is needed to identify and purify the responsible antioxidative components.

Cheju-Haenam HVDC link transmits electrical power up to 300[MW] Because of its size, HVDC system has a great potential for damping power system oscillations. This paper with the frequency control of the KEPCO HVDC system linking Haenam to Cheju island. Frequency control at Cheju island ensures that the island AC system frequency is maintained Performance are evaluated using a reduced Cheju network and a detailed model of the fm system modelled in the PST software. Transient oscillations for the 3 phase fault carried out with HVDC frequency control are well damped as the control parameters have been adjusted.
This paper presents the modeling and power quality analysis of Jeju island power system connected with wind farm, and thermal power plant. It is for indicating the influence of wind farm operation in steady and transient state in Jeju island power system during the HVDC system overhaul period. For the computer simulation, three kinds of main item are modeled, which are 67[MW] wind farm, thermal power plant and Jeju power load. To analyze the influence of the wind power generation to the Jeju power system, two kinds of simulations are carried out by using the PSCAD/EMTDC program. One is the steady state operation under the variable speed wind, and the other is the transient state operation when all of wind farms in Jeju island are disconnected from the Jeju power grid instantaneously on the rated power output. With the comparison of these results, it is useful for analyzing the power quality of Jeju power system versus wind power generation.
Collection of moths in four Gotjawal terrains of Jeju Island was conducted using black light trap, beginning July through September 2005. The insects investigated were classified into 146 species, 15 families and 7 superfamilies, and Noctuoidea appeared to have accounted for 41.1%, or 60 species, which was the largest number among them, followed by Geometroidea. Ercheia niveostrigata was found to have been the dominant species over the entire area. The diversity index showed the highest at Aewol Gotjawal and the lowest at Hangyeong-Andeog Gotjawal. Aewol Gotjawal formed a cluster with Gujwa- Sungsan Gotjawal at the lowest chord distance (0.75). At the higher chord distance of 0.82, Jocheon- Hamdeog Gotjawal fused the cluster of Aewol Gotjawal and Gujwa-Sungsan Gotjawal. Hangyeong-Andeog Gotjawal fused with the rest three terrains, forming a single cluster at the highest chord distance of 0.89.
A total of 83 surface sediments and 55 sea water samples, collected from the southwestern sea of Cheju Island, were analyzed in order to understand their textural characteristics, geochemical composition and the clay mineralogical features. The sediments were subdivided into ten textural classes, namely clayey sand, slightly gravelly muddy sand, sandy clay, clay and mud. The coarse and fine-grained mixed sediments are distributed in the northern part and around the Island, whereas the fine-grained deposits are mainly distributed in the central and southern parts of the study area; small scale mud patches are distributed in the southwestern and northern parts of Cheju Island. The high concentration of total suspended matter in study area gradually increase toward the southwestern and northwestern offshore area. The concentration of geochemical elements is as follow: the content of Mn, Al, Zn, Cr, Cu and Sn increase toward the southern part which is covered mainly with fine-grained deoposits, whereas the content of Ca, Mg and Ag is higher in the northern area; the elements such as Ni, Na, Fe and Pb are more concentrated relatively in muddy deposits rather than in sandy sediments. The light minerals such as Na-Ca feldspars show a high content around the Socotra Rock, toward the Soheugsan and Cheju Islands, but the K-feldspars are relatively high around the Cheju Island. It was noticed that the provenance of these sediments is partly influenced by the geological characteristics near the island. X-ray diffractogram for clay minerals from the southeastern mud patch and around the Soheugsan Island shows the diagnostic calcite peak indicating that the greater part of these clay fraction may have been derived from present and ancient Hwangho River. The high concentration of smectite in the northern part near the Cheju and around the Soheugsan Islands, eastern side of Socotra Rock probably result from supplies smectite altered from volcanic materials distributed in the Cheju Island and Socotra Rock, whereas the samples near the Chuja and northern parts of the Cheju Island contain weak calcite peak and high concentration of kaolinite and chlorite which is closely related to the geolgical characteristics on the adjacenting land area.
The general pattern of the hydrographic conditions and tidal front of the northern coastal area of Cheju Island is investigated using the CTD observation data and a stratification parameter V ($J/m^3$) in $1991\~1993$. 1. The sea water of the northern coastal area of Cheju Island has a lower temperature and higher salinity than that in the central area of the Strait, and local temperature and salinity fronts appears frequently around this area. It seems that they are caused by the upwelling and the tidal front as well as a local topography. 2. A saddle-like distribution of temperature and salinity is formed in the Cheju Strait almost every month with relation to mixing of the different water masses. 3. In the northern coastal area of Cheju Island the stratification parameter V ($J/m^3$) was ranged from 8.4 to 209.8 $J/m^3$ in June, 201.9 to 634.9 $J/m^3$ in August, 0.18 to 680 $J/m^3$ in September, and $2.7\~462\;J/m^3$ in October, respectively. The tidal front was often formed around the place where the horizontal variation of the depth is very large and the potential energy with 10$J/m^3$ appears roughly along 50 m isobath.
